Good guess, but nope

It's this bad boy...I'm thoroughly impressed with it, and will be writing my own review of it soon:

Inkman......This is a great example of why I shoot in RAW. I saw that you guys where talking about the difference between RAW and JPEG in the other thread.

Lightroom is only $150...it's a bargain these days, especially for everything it's capable of doing. You won't need After Effects though, that's geared toward video

Lightroom is worth every penny. I can't see myself ever not using it at some point in post.

Great review. Looks like a pretty viable option for a little weight every day camera. I don't know too much about 4/3 cameras, but what are the lens options like? Do they have telephotos or just primes?

Thanks! They've got all sorts of lens options, zoom lenses, primes, wide angles, telephotos...they don't have any really long telephotos, but most people wouldn't be buying a Micro 4/3 camera for a really long telephoto anyway. There's also a lack of wide angle, wide aperture primes as well, but that's also lacking in cropped sensor DSLRs too.

I kept editing to a minimum with this one. Just got a 50mm F1.8 and this is one of the first photos I have taken with it. I don't have a CPL filter for it yet and this shot was actually hand held...Normally I never do that! I think it came out alright for a quick shot though. I love the clarity of the new lens though- and for the price!

That lens has great bang for buck There are two main things that bug me about this shot though...it's nice and sharp of course, but the windows are rolled down, and the angle of the road and background is bugging the hell out of me. With side shots like this, I feel like the lines should be parallel to each other, including the car. As far as more minor things go, I don't like how you cut it off in the middle of the door handle and the car it self is centered vertically in the frame.

Getting a little stir crazy due to the cold weather and decided to re edit some old photos. I re framed this one, did some cloning and desaturation of the background to make the car stand out.

Since this thread is about photography I want you guys opinions on something. I'm looking to get into the photography hobby however I don't want to spend hundreds on one of my new hobby (beside fire arms, cars, etc...). I've been looking for a point and shoot camera with a decent focus lens and came across a few potential purchase. I like to keep my budget max at $200. Here are the candidates and I would like some of your opinions:

1) Fujifilm S4500 $149.00 (14mp CCD, 30x optical zoom, f=4.3mm - 129.0mm, equivalent to 24 - 720mm, iso 64-1600,) Very basic for taking pictures.
2) Fujifilm SL300 $179.00 (14mp CCD, 30x optical zoom, SL300 : f=4.3mm - 129.0mm, equivalent to 24-720mm, iso 64-6400) A bit more advance with panorama feature, external flash support

3) Any suggestion for that price range? I would like CMOS sensor instead of CCD. But eveything I looked at with CMOS was about $300. Should I spend a little more and get a Nikon/Canon with CMOS sensor? I rather not spend that much on this hobby since I know all I want is some better quality picture than my cellphone. I know none of these will give me the quality DSLR will deliver in anyway.

Honestly, if you want to get into photography and only have around $200 to spend, look at buying an older SLR so that you can learn the basics.

For an extra $100 (Which is what, two tanks of gas or a really nice dinner?) over the two point and shoots that you mentioned above, you'll be much happier in the long run with something like this: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...al_camera.html

Keep in mind that you can also find something for less if you look around. I linked to B&H as they have a great warranty on used gear.

On the Nikon side, The D70s, D80, etc are also around that price range and are still good cameras for a beginner. I was using a D70s up until a month or so ago and never had any real complaints about it.

Thank you for the suggestion there. So is the megapixel really matter? I thought that give a higher resolution to the picture or something. One of the reason I don't want to get into DSLR is because I know I'll start buying lens for it which going to make this into another expensive hobby. But I'll take a look at thsoe camera you mentioned and see what kind of price point I can find.

One of the other guys can step in and correct me if I'm wrong, but the actual size of the sensor is more important in my opinion. A crop sensor DSLR like the ones that I mentioned above will have a larger sensor than the point and shoots that you're currently looking at.

I've found that my D70s (Which had a whopping 6.1 MP ) was good enough for small prints and posting to the web.

All of these were taken with my D70s (Clicking on them will display a larger version):
http://bangshift.com/blog/bs-photo-h...-and-more.html

Keep in mind that there are a TON of better photos in this thread, but I'm hoping to show that you shouldn't worry about a 6-8 MP DSLR while you're just starting out.

It can definitely be an expensive hobby, but you don't need to invest a lot to get started. That 18-55mm kit lens will hold you over for a while, but you're right in that you'll eventually want to buy better glass if you want to get serious with it.

I might get a used/refurbished D5100. Saw some for around $420 with the common 18mm lens which is that bad for a more modern DSLR. It can actually do 1080p video which was also one of the feature I have some interest in.

Just get whatever you feel comfortable with. Take into consideration your budget, your needs, and how far you would like to go with this "hobby" There really isn't a wrong decision, it just depends on your situation.

I don't think I'll go anywhere far with this hobby. All I want is a camera that can take decent pictures so I can do some random photoshoot with my car on a good day. not trying to become a real photographer or professional by any mean. That's why I don't really want to spend too much. I might just get a nice Point and shoot with those 30x zoom wide angle lense. I'm doing some researching right now. If I can get a used DSLR for around $200-$300 I might just go with that.

my d5000 i actually up for sale...you'll just need a lens to go with it. check my thread, $ is OBO.

but i agree with what was said, a used SLR will net you more knowledge and better shots and a point and shoot.

The composition is great, but the desaturation is kinda weird, since the front and hood is very saturated, but the side of the car is desaturated like the background. I don't know if that's just the angle of the car or if there was just some leak over from your desaturation. If I want to get really nitpicky, the shadow is also kind of strange under the car, especially near the passenger side rear tire, because it looks like it ends abruptly, making that tire look like it's floating.

This is all very good advice. If you're just shopping for a decent point-and-shoot and don't care about going much farther with it, then this probably isn't the right thread for you. The thread is all about taking the photos themselves and getting better at what you do, and quite honestly it doesn't matter what camera you use to get constructive criticism here.

I should also point out that megapixels really don't matter at all unless you're making large (I mean poster-size) prints. My old D70 at 6 megapixels was plenty good enough to take published magazine photos. Go with a camera that's going to do what you want it to do and feel the most comfortable in your hands.
