Default Legacy N/A engine exhaust

Hey guys, I have an '06 Legacy with the 2.5 sohc and was hoping to find out if changing my exhaust setup would yield me any gains or would I just be wasting my money.
So, I have developed a leak in the y pipe and I always wondering/questioned why Subaru put 2 mufflers on a N/A engine. I wanted to go from the cat, and do a single with 2.5" piping. The total cost of this would be about $650 Cdn. I understand there's not much power to squeeze out of this engine but still, my reason for doing this was to drop a few pounds and get some power/increase mileage.
Oh, and this was gonna be a custom job, using Magnaflow mufflers.
Let me know your thoughts.
Thanks.

It's a waste of money. You will get zero increase in power, even if you just unbolt everything beyond the cats.

keep it stock, make it run as it was engineered without trying to modify. there are no performance gains to be had.

Well, again, I'm not looking for some huge gains or something. It was for mileage improvement and some extra power.
I had to tail someone in a Hyundai Santa Fe 2.0T, he was a lot faster than me! I couldn't keep up!

you'd have to spend more than what your car is worth in modifications to be as fast as that santa fe. I'd just do whatever it takes to keep the maintenance up on it with OEM equivalent parts until you're ready to sell and move into something else; or, just keep it as a reliable daily driver for as long as you want to.

exhaust isn't a bad idea if that's what you want. I've put a muffler on a stock N/A subaru 2.0i impreza sport because I wanted a bit more sound from it.... Just don't expect any measurable performance gains.

Well, stock mufflers are always gonna be more restrictive that anything else you buy, not sure why there would not be any gains to be had?

you could run a straight pipe instead of mufflers and I bet there'd be no difference compared to a stock muffler on either 1/4 mile or dyno numbers for an NA 2006 legacy with who knows what maintenance history and mileage. The car just doesnt output enough exhaust flow to be restricted by the factory exhaust. Sure, its quiet from the factory compared to aftermarket, but that doesn't mean it doesnt allow enough air flow though it.

195k km's, semi syn or syn oil, about 8k interval. Only strange issue I have with it is that the wires keep going, changed 3x in 3 years!
Alright, money is saved. I appreciate the input!

You could cut the exhaust right after the cats and you'd gain zero power. The cats are far more restrictive on ANY car than whatever comes after them. Don't waste your money.

So, got my Y pipe fixed today & mentioned to the dudes there about my proposed set up. They said that yes, there would've been a noticable difference.
Great, spent $180 to do a Y repair when I coulda done my setup for $600 & got something.
