I Love the WRX but it just doesnt seem like a very practical vehicle up there compared to the outback. It's my only car and with the premium gas requirement, no tow capability, and a max speed limit of 65 in the state, I imagine for good reason with all of the wildlife. It just seems like a better idea to pick up a vehicle with a bit more utilitarian use. I've looked for any kind of rallycross or anything like that that's geared towards the WRX and cant find anything substantial near Fairbanks.
Is what I've been able to research accurate or am I way off base with my thinking here?
Yes, you are way off base!
Subarus of all shapes and sizes are popular in Alaska. Lots of open country near Fairbanks to stretch your legs in a turbo car. I'm no longer there but enjoyed all areas of the state immensely. You are in for an adventure.
Most of the racing is down in the Anchorage area but there are still a few up in Fairbanks and I believe they still incorporate the Fairbanks races in both SCCA and other clubs race schedule.
You also have the Tanacross races that usually take place each Memorial and Labor day weekend. It is an old world war 2 era airfield in the middle of nowhere that the forest service usually uses to fight fires with. They rent it to the Lions club and high speed events are held there complete with camping and serious shenanigans each evening. Triple digits are common and necessary there!
Arctic Alaska SCCA in facebook has a page, there are other racing clubs you should be able to link into from there.
Nasioc is largely dead in AK now, only a few of us old school folks lurk here any longer. The scene was once vibrant there and this site lively. Many of us moved away or moved on. Most of the scene seems to be on Facebook these days.
Enjoy your journey.
