Default Arktikpenguin's Big Turbo Bugeye Build

Hello! I am Tom, and I have been a member of the Subaru community for 3 years now! This site has always been my home, providing plenty of info to help me when I was a noobie, and still helping me even today. I normally lurk, and don't post much other than some sale threads and my recent PPB thread. Recently I happened upon a CCA position with the USPS, and I can finally provide enough content to start a build thread, whereas before I only got new parts every month or so, which seemed boring to me.

Anyhow, I'll be including my current build, all future plans, and everything in between as I build my dream car into my own image.

Some info on my car:

I purchased my PSM '02 WRX on May 22nd, 2015, with an Autometer Boost Gauge, Injen SRI, Spec-D Catback, Gimmick Turbo Inlet, and some beat up spray painted Primax 618 wheels. Everything else was stock! She had 211k miles, original trans with 211k miles, and a newer EJ205 with around 65k miles. It had ugly red and black pinstriping which was immediately buffed off, and the car received a full buff and polish!

Present day pictures:

My goal is to create a car that I can drive daily, but also take to a track and whomp on it with the tune turned down. The close ratio of the v7 transmission should help with the track goal, and also help keep it fun on the street, even with such a big turbo. I'm hoping to get the car down to around 2900lbs with interior intact, and full on fluids. With me that'll put the car around 3125lbs give or take lol. My hope with this build is to build and tune the car exactly how I want it, and to learn a LOT along the way. I have a good grasp on tuning and building a subaru, but there is still much more to learn through hands on experience, and trial and error. While some months may go slow with this build, I do not plan on selling or stopping. Hopefully it turns out the way I envision it, and hopefully you enjoy the thread!

So currently sitting, I'm running a fairly safe tune @22.5psi on 93 octane making roughly 370whp/330wtq. I will be trying out e85 and bumping up to 24psi once I get my id1300x injectors and hopefully I'll make 420-440whp. I'll be swapping over to a rotated setup w/ the Borg Warner S369SX-E over the summer, grabbing the full sti swap, and then building the engine/heads over the winter while having it painted.

My "goal" is 600whp, which won't be difficult at all with the planned setup but I'm sure I'll encounter some headaches during the build. I am getting a killer deal on my turbo and piping setup, plus I love huge turbos. Lag is a nonfactor to me. I have an FP Green on my 2L and I get around town and pass people just fine now, with a 2.5 I'll have a good bottom end bump and that will be more than enough. I will be doing some track days, and some drag racing. I don't expect much in the way of 1/4 mile times with the short ratio of a JDM 6 speed but I'm not chasing times, I just want to have fun!

Things should get interesting very soon, stay tuned for next week!

Id1300x injectors are on their way, and I will be throwing some e85 in with my fp green to see how it does! Wish my 5 speed luck!

Got my id1300x in! Didnt even know you could pull the silver cap off to reveal which model of x injector it is, so now I know! Once I get some time off work I can get these suckers in and retune it, then make the switch to corn!

Thank you! I plan on getting my v7 sti drivetrain transplant next, but I may grab the clutch and super shifter set first. Might also grab a DSS aluminum 1 piece driveshaft to go along with the setup. We shall see!

Just throwing this out there you may already know but figure it doesn't hurt just in case, the clutch, shifter and driveshaft from the 5 speed and 6 speed aren't interchangeable, so if you get ones for the 5mt you will have to swap to 6mt stuff when you do the v7 swap.

The 5mt clutch will work in the 6mt if you have a 5mt flywheel and possibly some other variables, but I have made the 5mt clutch work before with an 07 6mt. Anyway I am rambling on but wanted to throw that out there in case you were gonna get 5mt parts.

Yep, I know they arent interchangeable. I was just gonna have the shifter set driveshaft and clutch waiting for when i do the 6 speed.

I figured you knew. Now I see you said "to go along with the setup" I must have been reading through a little fast lol.

The v7 6mt with those taller tires should kick some serious ass too.

Hell yeah, and with a slightly higher rev limit I should atleast hit 60 in 2nd. On my 5mt I see 72 on the dash, so around 69-70 real world lol

2nd at 8000rpm is 67 mph with 26" tires and jdm 6mt gearing. 64mph @ 8000rpm with 25" tires. 60mph @ 7500rpm with 25" tires. You can figure out different setups with this gearing calculator.

Got my new o ring set and tossed the id1300s in today. Threw the base tune on and she fired right up. These run much smoother than my five o injectors, probably due to having actual data for tuning and not doing a guesstimate.

All in all, i should have gone id1300s right away. ID are very good and the install was about 20x easier than my five o injectors.

Never updated this, but I ended up bending a rod while out testing spark cut launch control. My plans have changed a bit and I'll update the parts I'll be going with when I have some time. For now, she's at my brother's body shop being torn apart for a full repaint. Fixing all the dents, removing rust properly, and rolling the front and rears properly as well. New paint code will be 86f, which is Blue Steel Mica off of the 1999-2000 gc8.

After she's painted she'll be going into storage until next Spring. I'll be amassing parts and the built engine, and we will go from there.

Its been a while, but I've got some updates. Car is apart for paint, found some rot in my front fenders and also got the quarters cut out and welded with new subie savers panels. Engine bay is being painted as well as the radiator support. My new front bumper has been trimmed around the fog bezels, license plate holder shaved, and the prodrive + limited lips moulded to the bumper and smoothed out.

Engine has been pulled and disassembled, and I figured out what broke! With my **** luck, a shim broke off of a bucket and took that cam out with it but no other damage has been taken. If anyone wants a cheap 2.0 shortblock with the oil and water pumps still attached with some **** heads to use for cores they are for sale!

I also received a ton of parts! In this time I've amassed the following:

- Fortune Auto 500 Coilovers
- JDM STi HID Headlights w/ ballasts
- Lightwerkz Harness
- ej257 Shortblock
- s20 heads ported with supertech beehive springs and retainers/guides/seats
- JDM STi Foglight covers painted 86f
- Sparco P 310 Steering Wheel
- NRG Short Hub
- NRG Short Quick Release
- Redlinegoods medium gray w/ grabber blue stitch solid leather shift boot + e brake boot + extended armrest cover
- Torque Solutions Pitch Mount

I know it doesn't seem like much but Im also paying off paint and body work at the same time! I plan to finish paint and body wotk in January, then Ill have the block and heads sent out to be drilled for 1/2" studs and closed decked by outfront. Afterwards we will see what comes!

Also, happy holidays to any readers!

Doing stuff the right way! Good work. If you don't your new paint will look like crap fast. Looking forward to more updates on that front.

Looks like a nice list of goodies! I bet those ported heads are gonna come in handy.

Quick update! Going to bullet point to make things easier to read:

-New front bumper molded, license plate holder shaved, shaved vents, shaved foglight holes, and shaved for a Treadstone 900hp FMIC to fit
-Old quarters chopped, wheel wells cleaned up and patched, new quarters welded in and primed.
-New OEM Fenders came in, primed up.
-New Rear Passenger Door Hinges
-POR15 Metal Prep + Gray RPC on it's way for the engine bay and rad support
-NRG Short Hub, V2 Quick Release, and Sparco P310 installed. Amazing fitment and feels great.
-S20 Ported Heads torn down, porting verified, shimless buckets found, Supertech Dual Valve Springs w/ Titanium Retainers found.
-Acquired new BC272 Camshafts, GSC Intake + Exhaust Valves, GSC Valve Guides, Supertech Valve Seals.

Up next is more body work, primer, and paint! I can't wait! Also going to be prepping the engine bay and brushing on the POR15 Gray RPC, and also removing the AC, ABS Pump, Brake Booster, and other such things.

Stay tuned!

Bit of bad but also good news. I degreased and metal prepped the bay, went to brush on the POR15 and of course it's fisheyeing. I take prepall and wipe down the entire bay, still fisheyeing!! We sand down part of the rad support and it still fisheyes! So either my POR15 is contaminated, or my brushes are contaminated. We said screw that and are gonna actual spray and clear the engine bay then. My brothers made a custom color that I have not seen yet, but they said I will like. I'll post pictures once it's finished in a few days!

More good news is my new OEM 05 WRX rear bumper has shown up, along with new mounting brackets. Once we get the fenders rolled it's finally ready for finishing body work and being painted. I'm definitely excited to get this finished!

Got the engine bay all scuffed down and cleaned again. My brother opted to seal it off, base coat it and lay some clear. Color is B39 (Mineral Grey Metallic, BMW Color) with some Subaru silver added in. I love the way it looks and should contrast well with my exterior!

Don't mind the ugliness under the battery, we aren't too worried about it after neutralizing and sealing it.
