My car probably won't start in the morning due to cold. Any suggestions?
I don't know the best place for this, but since the TriState area is currently experiencing a deep-freeze I'm hoping somebody can offer help.
As referenced here, Friday night/Saturday morning my car refused to start due, I believe, to the extreme cold. It finally started Saturday after warming up a bit. This evening when I got in to leave my sister's house (the car had sat from ~5:30-10:30) it took 2 minutes of cranking before it'd start. The overnight temps are expected to hit 10F and not go up much at all Wednesday so I'm assuming that, in the morning, it will not want to start. The car sits ~150 feet from my door/nearest power outlet, and there's nowhere warm I can put it anywhere around here. Is there somewhere I can pour hot/boiling water to attempt to thaw a frozen fuel line? Please help; I can't afford to be out of the office for a day. TIA DjB |

Best suggestion I can offer is to take the car for an hour drive to give the battery a good charge if your that concerned. I have'nt had any problems with my car's battery, so, I'm not really sure what the deal is with all these newer models blinken out.

Doesn't sound like the battery, since he cranked it for a while to get it started. Go get some fuel-line dry-gas and fill up the tank. it will absorb the moisture in the tank/fuel.

One thing that helps my WRX on very cold mornings is to turn the key to the auxiliary position first and leave it there for a couple of seconds. I believe that allows the fuel pump to build a bit of pressure. It helps my car to start on cold mornings.

Agree with the 2 guys above. Get a good charge so you can crank for a bit, put in some dry gas and maybe look into one of those electric motor blankets that warm up your engine compartment.

another tip from us winter sports advocates.. if it IS your battery you can easily remove it for the night store it inside and throw it in first thing in the morning.. not sure about frozen fuel lines tho...

Rich10 is right, turn the key to the on position and leave there until you hear what i believe is the pump turn off (usually 2 or 3 seconds thereabouts). your car should start right up unless there is something going with your battery, but if your car is turning over then it isnt your battery.

As paisan said, the battery has plenty of juice to spin the starter. I put in a bottle of dry-gas Saturday after finally getting it started (I filled the tank Thursday night and it was only 1/8 down since I hadn't driven it Friday night-Saturday) and another bottle last night after its hard start.
I've listened for the fuel pump noise but can't hear it; either my hearing isn't sharp enough (I have lost some hearing acuity due to unknown causes) or it's just particularly quiet. DjB |

i have found that the fuel pump usually runs from the time you turn your key to on until about the time you would hear your radio play if you have it on. that is another way to time it if you cant hear the pump itself running
