5th gear or no 5th gear???
Hey guys, 03 bug eye full stage5 dynod at 375 whp 20g 28psi! stock tranny. Go fig I stripped second gear!! So I just orderd the RA type R gearset. On rape U and steal yore moneys Racing's web site it has some threads from people that have bought these kits. People love this kit but...... the gears are so short in 5th they are at 70 mph at 4000 rpm's. My question is should I leave my stock 5th gear and just put one through four in and keep 5th stock for better high way mpg's?

Why are you asking us this question? Ask yourself, do I want to cruise at 70mph at 4000 RPM? I sure as hell wouldn't. What kind of driving do you do with your car? If it's daily driver, I'd keep the stock 5th. Will you even need 5th gear in the 1/4 mile?

See thats just it. I ran the 1/4 in 12.7 and just going into 4th. with these gears being shorter will i clear 4th then go into stock 5th and kill my time? Vivid racing rec. I put there 5th gear in. Its a daily driver but I have a Yamaha R1 and a jeep grand cherokee. But the 1/4 track I race at is a 90 min drive. Speed limit on the was is 75mph.

If im going to spend the $ on a 6speed id rather do the dog gear box! less shifting and a ton stronger. I just run the 1/4 mile and around town. If I was going to run the track I would love the 6speed. basicly these gears I orderd is very close to the 6speed gear raitio with out 6th gear But for $1,700 as to 5k Id say its worth it.

those gears arent going to hold up to long i would have went ppgs or 6spd for that power. i myself am at 330whp running the same gears and it scares me still. but i kept my stock 5th sinces its my daily right now and it feels pretty good. ppgs FTW

You shouldn't have any problems with these gears. Ive been talking to guys running well over 390whp. one guy is running around 380whp and has had them for 3 yrs with no prob. yes they are cut the same way the stock ones are and can fail the same way with slam shiffting. But the diff gear ratio changes around the tq and they are built better and stronger.

No it's not a big difference from 4th to 5th but doing about 70mph I'm around 3k or so which I love because with my evo 3 I get 20psi instantly. As for the gears failing I'm just worried because it's my 3rd tranny now the first 2 were stock but idk I guess just constantly beating on her I'm scared something is going to break. Also by this summer I should have my built 2.5L block with a FP Green or 30r which I plan to run around 400whp or so. Then I will do ppgs.
But again as stated keep your 5th gear you will be much happier. Good luck |

The V5/V6 RA ratios are a bad choice for drag racing with an EJ205 and your 3.9 final drive. You will be able to do 111 mph in 4th at 7000 rpm. With a 20G you will run over 111 and have to shift to 5th. It will be a huge rpm drop with usdm .738 5th and fall on its face. Really won't be much better with .825 jdm 5th.
I have a V2 jdm trans and can just barely finish in 4th at 110. If I shift to 5th it just lugs the engine and doesn't pull and kills the mph and et. Last edited by 69subaru360; 01-13-2011 at 10:39 PM. |
