Default Acura betting on new 400-hp luxury sedan and coupe to compete with Tier 1 brands

We keep hearing reports about Acura’s desire to become a Tier 1 luxury brand and now we get some insight into what the Honda brand has under its sleeve. In an attempt to move the brand upmarket, Honda will start offering Acura-only models that will compete with Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Lexus.
Following the 2009 Acura TL, Acura will get a brand new luxury sedan, rumored to be a four-door-coupe, that will compete with the likes of the Mercedes-Benz CLS. The new model will arrive just before the next-generation NSX in 2011 and will be powered by a 4.5-liter V-8 producing more than 400-hp. It is rumored to be built on a rear-wheel-drive architecture with all-wheel-drive as an option.

Acura is also rumored to be working on a Acura-only coupe - that will replace the gap left by the CL that ended production in 2003. A retractable hardtop version of the coupe is also hanging in the rumor-mill.
As for the greenness, the new 2009 Acura TSX will get a diesel version next year. A hybrid version of the redesigned RDX 2011 is also expected along with a V6 diesel for the redesigned MDX.

they'll be needing 450-500hp imo... Look what the M's and AMG's of the world are working with these days.

I bet it will come in with something relatively weak like 420HP or something.. Not that 420HP isn't a lot of power

Who said the car is going to compete with M's and AMG's?

The cars competition is the Jenny soccer mom mercs and bimmers. Anyway, the car does not need anymore power, what it needs is upscale styling to match the power and quality. Sorry, but while the Acuras do look nice (TL typeS comes to mind) nobody is going to take the current look seriously.

No.

This is not a high-performance model akin to an M or AMG. It's an engine to put Acura's models on the same page as the other equivalent luxury marques. This is exactly what Acura needs, it's not weak in the least.

Considering they have trouble selling $50k RL's, I'm guessing an $80k model won't do much better. Or is this supposed to be a halo car?

The V8 is long overdue, but shunting it into a sedan-cum-coupe isn't going to increase their brand perception one iota, and here's why:

If Acura seriously thinks they can play cars with the big boys in the CLS end of the pool, they're in for a(nother) rude wake-up call.

Jumping in at the $50K-plus mark is a marketer's wet dream, but ultimately brand suicide.

The guys who want a "status" car like a CLS (face it -- STATUS is the name og the game with 4-door coupes due to compromises in packaging in favor of styling) are NOT going to buy anything that doesn't come from The Fatherland, much less from a company that builds Civics, Accords and Elephants (nee, Element).

Acura needs to start where all the successful Luxo brands (MB,BMW, Audi, Infiniti) have already been -- a sporting compact sedan that takes its mission seriously (G35/A4/3-Series/early E/late C). (Lexus is a special case as those buyers tend to be geriatric in attitude, if not in actual demography.)

Until they can get younger, more aspirational buyers into a smart and sporting sedan for ~$35K (one that doesn't share a platform with the Accord, please), Acura will remain a luxury brand wannabe.

A car based on a rat's ass might be an improvement over the current Acura front ends.

Honda....you want to make over the impression of the Acura brand? Go look at Infinity.

Seeing as you will be able to get a CTS-V with 556hp for 60k, they better keep it below 50 or right around there.

I agree.... I wouldnt mind having another decent performer in the compact sport sedan market, though it would be a tough sell to go against the 3 or the new C class. Id be all for it instead of making a huge luxury land yacht.

I dont know how many of you guys feel the same way, but when i look at Acuras model lineup, i dont see *different* cars, i just see larger versions of the car under it.

"coupe" and "sedan" are just marketing terms, there's no strict definition. In the US, there is a standard that defines these by interior volume, but this can include 2-door sedans and 4-door coupes. Not sure about other countries.

Knowing Acura, it will be a 400hp and FWD with an ugly schnoz? I guess it will be edgier looking than the dull E-class and 5 series.
