Default Shock plan to turn new Audi TT into a four-door coupe

Shock plan to turn new Audi TT into a four-door coupe

New four-door Audi TT has been given the green light, and our exclusive images preview how it could look when it arrives within two years

The next generation of the Audi TT will be dramatically overhaul, with the iconic sports car transforming into a more practical and profitable four-door coupe, Auto Express can exclusively reveal. And it will be in showrooms in less than two years.

The German firm first hinted at the idea of a four-door TT with the TT Sportback concept back at the 2014 Paris Motor Show. However, plans to bring that model into showrooms never got off the ground for a number of reasons.

• Best sports cars currently on sale

It was partly due to a lack of customer demand, but the main factor was the VW Group emissions scandal, uncovered in 2016, which meant extensive cost savings had to be made and forced the termination of a number of projects across all brands, including Audi.

Four years down the line from that initial concept car, and with the shackles of Dieselgate loosening, Audi has finally given the green light to the four-door TT, Auto Express understands. It will serve as a direct replacement for the two-door model, which this year marks its 20th anniversary, as shrinking demand for sports cars and small coupes has forced Audi into a rethink for the next model.

One Audi board member told us: “If you set falling demand against rising costs, it’s obvious Audi cannot sustain its present course in the medium term. Instead, there has been intensive consideration of the coupe and the convertible in the compact segment.”

The UK is a good barometer of how well the TT performs for Audi in the sales charts because it is the car’s third most successful market. Sales of the model peaked at 10,413 examples in the UK back in 2008 but they have failed to surpass that mark since.

Auto Express understands that the project has been finalised and Audi’s board of management has approved the design of the four-door model.

Our exclusive images preview the look of the car. The TT’s low-slung stance is still recognisable, only with an extended wheelbase and rear end added to accommodate the extra doors.

The overall proportions are expected to remain close to those of the original TT Sportback concept, meaning the body will be around 290mm longer than today’s coupe, while 60mm will be added to the car’s width and 120mm to the wheelbase. The four-door is expected to be based on an updated version of the MQB platform that underpins the current TT.

Whereas today’s model, which has recently been updated, is only available with petrol engines, Audi will offer an extensive line-up of conventional and electrified powertrains on the next-generation version.

First to arrive will be a range of mild-hybrid petrol engines using 48-volt technology. This is designed to fill brief gaps of turbo lag and help improve economy by as much as 10 per cent. A new generation of electrified diesel engines will also be offered.

Plug-in hybrid technology will play a key role as well, as will the option of a fully electric model. Both of these will be a part of Audi’s plan to have 20 electrified vehicles on sale by 2025.

The German manufacturer predicts that around 35 per cent of its overall sales will be accounted for by such models in the same timeframe.

Ha, I'll be shocked when they offer a TT crossover.

Hmm, not really. I'm sure that's in the pipeline too. Not sure what they could do to shock me. Offer a lightweight TT with a high-strung NA 5-cylinder and a manual transmission?

What is the point? S3, RS3, S4, etc.

A 4 door TT makes no sense to me they already have sports sedans that overlap the TT.

Yup. You can have a 2 door sedan, but you can't have a 4 door coupe.

It's a fastback A3 with super inflated pricing. That's cool. I guess.

Default New Audi TT could be reinvented as an electric sports car

From AutoExpress again

New Audi TT could be reinvented as an electric sports car

The under-threat Audi TT may have a future after all, after it emerged that the company’s technical boss is trying to convince his fellow board members to develop a successor to the sports car with pure-electric power.

The prospects for Audi’s iconic small sports car, which made its debut more than 20 years ago, have been increasingly in doubt thanks to modest overall sales and ever-tightening CO2 emissions legislation. Audi sources have suggested that one idea could be to develop a four-door ‘TT Sportback’ successor to the current Mk3 model.

However, speaking exclusively to Auto Express, Audi’s recently appointed board member for technical development, Hans-Joachim Rothenpieler, said that he is “fighting” to keep a two-door sports car in the line-up.

“At Audi, we need cars like the two-door TT,” Rothenpieler told us. “It is in the DNA of our brand. I’m really fighting for this car and I’ll try to convince my colleagues that we have to do it.

“But there is a second point, a second story. We have to move all of those cars, like the TT, into an electrified future. The current status with this car and its platform is that it is prepared only until EU7 [even tougher emissions regulations that could kick in by 2021].

“We have started a discussion now about what’s happening after that point, but there’s also another debate, which I actually believe is significantly more important, on how to have cars like the TT with electric technology. We need answers to both of these issues.”

Rothenpieler admitted that talks on the TT’s electrified future include the idea of both plug-in hybrid and pure-electric models. However, he also revealed that the discussions on a BEV version, previewed here by our exclusive images, are at an advanced enough stage for different battery layouts to be under consideration.

“For cars like the TT, the battery in the floor is a problem,” he said. “Normally in a pure-electric car, you have a wheel at each corner and the battery pack in the centre, and the pack is 12 or 13 centimetres tall. But this makes the base of the seating point higher.

“So for small, sporty cars with only two seats, we need a different concept – such as one bit of the battery in the centre of the car and another bit in front of the front wheels, or behind the rear wheels. Either way, we end up splitting the battery. And that’s what we’re looking at for these iconic cars. That’s a solution that could work, perhaps.”

The boardroom battle on the future of Audi’s sports cars also includes the R8, although its prospects are also likely to be linked to what happens with the smallest Lamborghini supercar on sale, the Huracán.

Rothenpieler added: “It’s the same with the R8, really. We have been talking about the R8 and the TT, but when we presented the e-tron GT, it’s an iconic car as well, a real statement. For me, the e-tron GT was the first step towards having an electrified car with Audi Sport RS in its DNA.

“It’s a bit bigger, that car, so it was still possible to use the normal battery layout. But if we talk about R8 then yes, we have to divide the battery system, in the same way as we have to with the TT.”

OP- thanks for the info.

Meh on the 4-door TT. It's like that Porsche sedan.. or even worse, 4-door Cooper and that ridiculously ugly CivicSi sedan. Yuck.
Some cars should just be left alone a 2 door or its origin if CUV/SUV.

The TT is a good opportunity for an EV. Sporty and exclusive enough for the higher price, just large enough for a decent battery

The big wheels really help hide how ridiculously high that belt line is. You don't realize how small those windows are until you line it up with the seats. With that cramp looking rear passenger compartment, it's like an even less useful A3 sedan.

Considering that the TT is already basically just a coupe version of the A3, I don't understand the justification to make a sedan TT.

IMO, Ford and Audi are not competitors in any way, shape, or form. Not sure why people are discussing the 4 door mustang in here. They will not be cross-shopped by all but 3 people...

Entire German market is going with 4 door coupes. Sort of a fan, but not really and completely against the crossover 'coupes'.

Soooo, they are making the S3 in a sportback version. Ok, cool but there won't be much headroom for the people in the back seat.
