Thumbs up Reshaping of News & Rumors Forum

Hello All,

First thank you for making this forum active and interesting for quite sometime now. Special thanks to NYCshopper for taking time out of his horrendously busy schedule to accomodate and entertain us with all these automotive news.

You will notice now that a sub forum has been created for Non-Subaru News & Rumors (top of forum).

This will provide more ease navigating based on car manufacturers. Of course some miscellaneous threads will be allowed but they will be monitored; moved, cleaned up or deleted if I have to.

You will have Subaru related News & Rumors and threads will be setup for that as well; such as STi, WRX, Tribeca and so forth. The same rules apply.

Thank you for your patience as we continue to improve NASIOC

I'm not sure how I feel about this yet. For example, if bigger news were to come out about a specific vehicle such as "Tribeca is getting a new front end design that is not the airplane grille", would this qualify as a new thread, or would this simply be buried on page 5000 never to be seen by anyone ever again? I think it should be divided kind of like on the main page where it IS organized by car type, but that is only a parent grouping with all applicable news and rumors to that car listed as its own thread rather than these super-sized threads.

Just a thought...

When the Tribeca gets a new front end, I'll decide what to do based on how much activity are in the existing threads.

Adding the Non-Subaru News and Rumors was a good idea. Attempting to regiment the News and Rumors forums is a very bad idea. It will make it impossible to coherently discuss a topic because each of the regimented threads will eventually contain dozens of different topics each being discussed simultaneously in one thread. Regimented threads are unworkable for the exact same reasons the gigantic non-Subaru thread didn't work well. They won't make anything easier to find and they won't reduce WTLW posts.

The attempt to regiment the number of discussion topics (i.e. threads) in the News and Rumors forums should be reconsidered.

Instead of criticizing what we're trying to accomplish here, then make suggestions you think will contribute productively. As of now, I think this is more in streamline with adequately putting discussions of car makes in their own thread as opposed to having an unmanageable thread that existed. I will continue to monitor the behavior of the forums. As of now, it will aleviate (sp?) the pain of dumping everything in one thread, which is hard to follow.

Agree. We need to be able to make a new thread when we have a new topic about an existing car.

agreed++

Well intentioned, long over due, but currently not very user friendly.

how would you treat car shows...?
people like to see car show pictures...
it's hard to put pictures into forums according to car brands...
how about a thread for car shows...? what you think...?
people have been posting car shows everywhere... in general discussion... in member gallary...

I have to agree with Jon. I like the idea of having a non-subaru forum, its a better idea than a gigantic thread.

I'm not liking the "Related:" threads in both the regular Subaru and Non-Subaru forums. It will make specific things harder to find. I think we should get rid of the "Related:" threads and simplify, just have two forums, one for Subarus, one for everything else.

From a moderator's standpoint, this way you'll only have two categories to filter mis-posted threads into. Rather than, well, way to many. The current system might work, but it relies to much on people knowing where to post topics. As we've all seen many times before, not many people really do.

And lock the "non-subaru" mega thread already, its past the expiration date.

I concur to some extent.

The breaking up of all the unrelated Subaru news and rumors was well past due, and I feel it's a great idea. The gigantic "non-Subaru" thread that we had going had gotten so big that I just never even bothered to browse through it anymore. I personally feel that streamlining these into various manufacturers was a good move, although even just haveing a dedicated forum to non-Subaru news would be better than simply one large thread.

However, like others, I too have reservations about breaking up all the various Subaru models. Too many threads end up branching off and covering a wide range of topics that might vary greatly from the original post that I can't see this method as being very effective in locating particular information. Plus this doesn't really address the topics that may cover more than one model (say Subaru Technica International in general), or topics that aren't model specific at all (sales figures, general press releases, etc.). I really think Achilles38WRX has the right idea in that we need just a general Subaru news area, without all the "related" threads.

+1

I'll leave the non-Subaru section out of my comments as I don't frequent that area.

I browse the News and Rumors forum a few times a week, and I think now it'll be very difficult to find information about any given Subaru model given the "[model] Related:" thread layout. Search won't help much unless one knows the exact news story they're searching for, and even then, they'll have to trudge through the entire thread to find the highlighted words.

If you're going to split out the models, I think you've got to go further to make it usable, e.g. grouped by model year or chassis code, which would require quite a bit of moderation and create an unmanageable number of threads. In other words, the models shouldn't be limited to one thread each; from a user's standpoint, rumors about the 2007 Impreza deserve a separate thread from 2005 Impreza safety research.

In all my time on this board, I've never seen more than 20 threads posted in during any given 7-day period in the News and Rumors forum. Perhaps that is due to heavy moderation, and obviously there is a need for single threads relating to "what my dealer said" and merging threads regarding the exact same news item, but one thread per model is just too broad a grouping.

Good points fellas. I know I will rarely venture into each individual mfg section and maybe miss some neat info. Just having a non-Subaru section would be better off, even splitting it into Import and Domestic sections would be fine, but each mfg is a bit comfusing perhaps. Need not separate it too much as it will take the fun out of here and make it a little too serious perhaps.

These comments I will take under consideration. One thing I need to point out is you guys will be able to post new threads that don't necessarily fall into one of the existing threads like sales figures and so on. You are not entirely restricted to what's been created.

But I did create some threads so you guys have an idea on how the forum is layed out. Some guidance per say.... But I will make sure things don't get carried away. That applies to both Subaru and Non-Subaru related forums. I figured separating by car manufacturer will help ease searches and posting as many have different preferences on what interests them; instead of bastardizing that long thread.

Again, I will continue to monitor activity in these forums and feel free to give input in this thread. I will not tolerate insults on how the forum is layed out. But suggestions and input will be noted.

Thanks again.

I too agree that the non-subaru subforum doesn't need to be broken up any more then the sub forum itself.

At a glance I can't even begin to gather whether new news has been posted, or some light hearted comment about the fastArness of the next neon ...

Where as if it's just in one subforum, it would allow new current topics to rise to the top, as well as leave for better searching for past threads.

Great idea, in concept, but I don't think it flows that well.
