2001 Leg L
Hey, I have been out of the Soob loop for a couple of months. I am looking for a new wagon. From what I understand the new "L" has the 2.5L, same AWD, Tranny, and brakes as the GT. Where the GT gives you power moonroofs, leather wrapped wheel, fake wood, stiffer sway bar, fog lamps and bigger wheels, and $5000 larger price tag. If I went with the "L" added snow tires to the 15" rims (I live in MN) buy new 17" rims this summer, new or used sway bar 18-20 mm, and some Hella fogs I should be waaaayyyy less than 5 large for these mods. Am I missing something about the "L" or has Soob really updated it when they dropped the 2.2L from the engine line-up? Thanks for the info.

Sounds like a plan. Wish I had waited for the 2000 L 2.5 instead of getting a 1999 OB; then I would have a more sporting platform to play with. C'est la vie.

I believe there is also the added ground effects (ie side spats), but that will still keep you under $5K
Sounds like a plan. EDIT: Duh... the L doesnt come with the LSD. Thats were the rest of the $$$ goes. [This message has been edited by Mike2000GT (edited December 27, 2000).] |

I am also under the impression that, for 2000 anyway, the springs and potentially struts are different, L vs GT. Matters not if you are going to change them anyway. You could get 2000 Ls sans roof rack, too, which would save some high weight... although it looks completely goofy without one. |

Might want to wait and check the new 2002 Impreza line wagons...
Just a suggestion |

That's what I bought.
Why pay subaru all the extra $$, when I am just going to throw out most of the suspension (and stereo) anyway? The 15" steels are great for snow tires! I got kinda lucky finding a car a dealer wanted to get rid of, but I saved $8,000 over a GT, and have a car that is much lighter and faster anyway! I got the 2.5L, and a five speed - an excellent platform to build off of if you want to do it yourself! |

That would be a brighton, discontinued after the 2000 model year. |

Wasn't aware that the L model has the same brakes as the GT. Better re-check your specs.

It's not quite the $5k difference, but there are a few differences:
- Color matched mirrors (ooohh) - Chrome front grille (aaahhh) as well as: - heaters for the front wipers (good for northern climes) and (i think ) butt warmers - alloy wheels - dual moonroofs (very very nice for the rear passengers) - rear limited slip differential You CAN make a justification for it, but a lot depends on how important the moonroofs and the rear LSD is to you. Well Nubaru2 would certainly be correct on pre-2001. The GT had the larger calipers and roters. But according to my Legacy 2001 brochure it says...Brakes Front 10.7" vented disk, twin piston Rear 11.3". (to me this seems backward) It does not mention any difference between any of the Legacy models ie. GT dimentions vs. "L". So I take this to mean they streamlined production and put the same brakes on all Legacys. If this is incorrect could someone please fill me in. Thanks.

Yup from what I heard from the boy's at SOC, they told me that new '00-up Legacy L & GT's have the same brakes.
Personally, the moonroof is great... especially on hot days! It's too bad the '99 GT's didn't have a rear LSD option... looks like I'll have to get a Cusco! |

Well Shut my mouth!! If SOA has chosen to bestow the brakes we GT owners PAID EXTRA FOR!! on the 01 "L" model, how fortunate for you "L" buyers, because the brakes on these cars are incredible!! I won't complain, after paying less than $14K for my 98 with all the bells and whistles (minus 1 of the moonfoofs!)leather, cd changer, tweets, etc, etc! Did get the clatter at start-up and the other DOHC shortcomings !! I like my hood-scoop and more angular lines though!!

It stated that the larger (GT) brakes on the "L" model came with the 5 speed only, and that the automatic transmission came with the smaller brakes. Could have been for the 2000 model year, I'm not sure. |
