Hey Big Elm Nice job.

You might want to add an American Related for all things funny such as Panoza and Saleen S7.

How about a Techo Car section for all those neat things that come out from bosch and other car making companies.

There can be threads created about those types of news. Like I said, as long as it's not abusive

Instead of all the "Toyota related", "Nissan related," etc. threads in the Non-Subaru News Forum, I would rather just see a free for all so any new topics (regardless of manufacturer) can have a title that will let me know whether I'm interested in it or not. Right now I have to click into every manufacturer's thread that has a new post even though I don't care about most of them.

the only other car forum i go to is...the "Car Lounge" @ VWvortex.com at the time it was also only a sub-forum

http://forums.vwvortex.com/zeroforum?id=1

This was also the most popular gathering place for enthusiasts to talk maturely about all types of cars...not just VW...

it has since grew into it's own site...

http://www.carlounge.net/

http://forums.thecarlounge.net/zeroforum?id=1

plus you can access the same forum across all the other sites owned by them...

http://forums.mwerks.com/zeroforum?id=1

http://forums.triplezoom.com/zeroforum?id=1

many more....

so i actually see this as progress for this site, since most people here are True Enthusiasts and not just fanboys...

Thanks BigElm...

Where as if it's just in one subforum, it would allow new current topics to rise to the top, as well as leave for better searching for past threads.

Great idea, in concept, but I don't think it flows that well.

I somehow doubt the other mods will be willing to move posts from the General Forum (like they often do) to the new Subforum.. much less the sub-threads.

People who claim that they couldn't find what they were looking for in the old 'Non-Subaru' threads and reposted, will do the same with the new forum layout. You can search within a thread for individual posts, but most of the lazy n0obs who were guilty of re-posting never even bothered to try that.

Why is there a Mazda thread, but you want Volvo, Aston Martin, Land Rover and Jaguar topics to be posted under Ford?
Where do I post about MGs, Morgans and Protons?

If you look at the Mazda thread, it clearly states why. Come on guys.. you gotta look!

Some of you are complaining about all the threads and how you're going to catch up on them, yet you want me to add Aston Martin, Land Rover, etc.

If it's not intuitive, what's the point of 13+ separate threads? If I wanted to read about specific car brands, i'd go to a specific car site. The great thing about the 'Non-Subaru' threads was that they covered everything.

That said, I appreciate you taking this on, BigElm. Don't think you're not appreciated. I'm either fighting change or fighting for change, I'm not sure which yet.

Ok... I've created a poll, it's a sticky at the top of the forum.

I'll leave the non-Subaru section out of my comments as I don't frequent that area.

I browse the News and Rumors forum a few times a week, and I think now it'll be very difficult to find information about any given Subaru model given the "[model] Related:" thread layout. Search won't help much unless one knows the exact news story they're searching for, and even then, they'll have to trudge through the entire thread to find the highlighted words.

If you're going to split out the models, I think you've got to go further to make it usable, e.g. grouped by model year or chassis code, which would require quite a bit of moderation and create an unmanageable number of threads. In other words, the models shouldn't be limited to one thread each; from a user's standpoint, rumors about the 2007 Impreza deserve a separate thread from 2005 Impreza safety research.

In all my time on this board, I've never seen more than 20 threads posted in during any given 7-day period in the News and Rumors forum. Perhaps that is due to heavy moderation, and obviously there is a need for single threads relating to "what my dealer said" and merging threads regarding the exact same news item, but one thread per model is just too broad a grouping.

Why don't we make a special new section for each thread? Having it split into 250 different sections is a pain to navigate. Of course, so was the "mega all non subaru news thread"

Why not one general "news" forum without all the segmentation? The most interesting articles stay at the top, and the others fall to the bottom. Seems simple to me.

Besides, most industry news relates to subaru even if it doesn't directly relate to them.

Regimented threads are unworkable for the exact same reasons the gigantic non-Subaru thread didn't work well. They won't make anything easier to find and they won't reduce WTLW posts.

The attempt to regiment the number of discussion topics (i.e. threads) in the News and Rumors forums should be reconsidered.
agreed++

Well intentioned, long over due, but currently not very user friendly.

I agree as well. Why don't YOU (BigElm) make a poll and let users vote on it?

It's apparent you guys don't read thoroughly. I've already addressed this in the Sticky. You're not obligated to post in "Related" threads. But anything that already exist will be merged or deleted.

How else do you need me to explain this?

it would be nice if you locked all the related threads. that would get rid of them entirely and end the discussion for good.

IMO, this seperation system (by manufacturer) you've come up with sucks. If headlines can't be headlines, why bother posting anything at all? Burying information brings absolutely no attention to the fact that a quad turbo 6 wheel drive hummer was just announced... especially when it's tacked to the end of a GM thread.

Locking all those threads doesn't help. Just let them fade away if anything.

Problem is that some don't understand that... so if locked, they can start fresh threads. If someone wants to continue with an article in the existing locked thread, then they can copy it.... if no one is interested any longer, it will die out. This avoids repetitive posts within a thread like the mother of all threads we had before

Why close a thread and start a new one when a perfectly good one already existed ?

A few repetitve posts in a big thread is not such a big deal.
