Dead zone might also be the "torque dip" that you can see around 3500 rpm. This is also common on the FA20 engine in the FRS/BRZ. Looks like tune flattened the torque quite a bit.

Thank you for sharing! This is cool info. Really interesting is the significant power boost down low just from 87 and the high end with 93.
I've been poking around learning about tuning after seeing Rymar's throttle remap thread and some XV forum reports on improved driveability. I got a Tactrix OpenPort 2.0 so Throttle Happy (Aussie tuner) could apply a tune via ECUFlash but haven't pulled the trigger yet. I have some reservations but I'm feeling a much improved driving experience is worth a few hundred $$$. Looking forward to an update on this thread. Already seen 15 to 18% gains from just a tune in these... the CVT gets a full remap as well. Check the Subaru XV Crosstrek forum. 2 years of development into the FA/FB platform helps though! Should be doing a Raptor Supercharger on an XV in a few weeks to really show their potential!
In the manuals, no problems pulling from under 2000rpm in top gear up a hill that you would normally need to drop back to 3rd gear at same road speed for. They have an engine torque limiter causing the dip, easy enough to remove like the BRZ. |

Throttle,
Can you post some data? It would be nice to see some before and after dyno graphs along with any additional changes made to the cars that you have tuned. |

It's weird that the gain is so minor. I would assume the car has the "feel" better though, despite the low power gain. When I got a tune done on my 11 Si with a light build, the car felt entirely different. There were no lags or delays, everything was instant and pulled much better. Then again, that car even in stock trim made ~50 more hp than these make. But definitely keep us updated.

Ill post my "week after" impression later today but I cant assure you the result is not nearly as close to the above claims. |

For the lazy, from their FB page:
Throttle map Stock Accelerator Pedal Map Again, I'm pretty excited that this will alleviate a lot of the CVT's factory tuning problems. CalTech do you have a 5-speed? |

Alright. Maybe Im a bit a bit too buzzed to be posting this now but as I took a look back at the forum I figure now is a good a time as any...
To answer a recent question, I do have the 5MT and wouldnt settle for anything else. Again, filled with 91 straight from the tuner because it was on fumes when I left. As of today I burned the entire tank of 91 at about 350 miles on the odometer with some VERY aggressive driving (shifting at 3k-6kRPMS) to check out the results. (Monday Evening - Saturday Morning) Literally 98% of my driving is highway living in San Diego, commuting and even weekend trips, the highway is simply unavoidable. Meaning that I spend more time in 4-5th gear than any other, dropping to 3rd when I feel like burning more fuel. For the 2% off highway I certainly played around with the improvements. HIGHWAY DRIVING/HILLS Since my feel is that this car lacks in power when climbing hills Ill first focus on that. My commute to work takes me on an interchange (for anyone who may be from the SD area) from the 8E to the 15N, which is a not so steep as it is lengthy. I would typically take this most of the way in 3rd and and finish in 4th but the tune has easily allowed me 4th to 5th. There is a similar grade/length incline on my way home which has similar results. When crossing town on weekends I take the start of the 52W which crosses a larger hill than previously mentioned using 4th gear to clear without hassle. Again, previously, in 5th gear at ~75MPH with the pedal to the floor I would slowly lose speed and have to make that shift to 4th. Just today I was at 75MPH/~3kRPM and easily maintained/gained on 80MPH in 5th. When cruising/passing on flat ground there is a noticeable increase in performance 4th/5th. AROUND TOWN From a dead stop in 1st the car easily picks up better all the way through the end of third. 4th is still improved but its still not 3rd if you can imagine, or know because you own the 5MT. Cruising in 2nd or 3rd and then hitting the accelerator seems to be GREATLY improved through the range since one would typically be cruising around the 3kRPM range and slap the accelerator from there. MPG Improvement Yet to be seen because of the aggressive driving style. Synopsis Depending on the "daily driver" MPG results its, again, yet to be seen whether the tune was worth it or not, after all this is an AWD econobox. That was the real kicker, if there was a more efficient MPG increase vice the performance it would be worth the cost of the tune. If not... well... the car is EASILY more fun to drive and really the way it should be from the factory. Ive never owned a performance car so I cant really compare to a "real" tune. EDITED: Another note... after putting the CAI back in there after the tune it does seem to "ROAR" a bit more accelerating than it had, I mean at lower RPMS rather than 3500+ Aussie Tune Results I cant quite grasp the charts the posted from the Aussie XV Tune and even the details presented from the Mustang Dyno somewhat escape me. What I do understand is the "seat of the pants" results and I can say that I am happy. Not more than happy because I still have to see the MPG... The Aussie tune though... Given the numbers I still dont see how its possible to pull from under 2k in 5th on an incline unless that incline is negligible compared to what I consider an incline to be.5th has always, and as far as Im concerned, will forever be for cruising flat land. Until I get a 6MT 2019 STi? Final Word Ill post on an immediate degradation/improvement of MPG but as the tuner said it may take time to notice although it should certainly be an improvement if anything. My expectations were actually lower than the results to be honest. I figured this econobox NA engine wouldnt make anything at all and the curve would only be slightly smoother. I can imagine that a header back exhaust may produce somewhat better results but that would only come at a MUCH greater cost than Im willing. Furthermore the money for a supercharger would be MUCH better spend elsewhere. I wasnt trying to make power, just to smooth things out as they have been, and "take one for the team" if you will. Thanks to those who've taken the results simply as experimental (out of curiosity) and not been disappointed at the lack of power since it was, after all, to be expected. Cheers. |

Thanks for the write-up. Glad to hear it did smooth things and improve the drivability.

Exactly what I was hoping to hear. Can your tuner do remote tuning or would you have to bring it to CA?

Thanks for the update CalTech.
Those charts from ThrottleHappy are the ECU maps that control the throttle plate and accelerator pedal response. I don't get why people are saying this is minor. Yeah it's only like 10 torques but that's without changing anything else but the ECU on a NA car and it's all the way through the rev range. Not fair to compare to Turbo gains. |

We also have a 6 speed with higher gear ratios than the US 5 speed. I would say I have tuned more FB series motors including the FB25 than anyone other than Subaru themselves We have a Mainline Dyno that I usually use for tuning and a Mustang Dyno locally as well that I rarely use, doing a stock 2012 on dyno next week so will organise the Mustang to give a comparison number of stock Vs tune as well Last edited by throttlehappy; 08-26-2014 at 10:48 AM. |

@throttlehappy
How would one in the U.S. go about getting this tune? |

I got a PM from throttle happy detailing the process - seems very straight forward. Almost like jailbreaking/rooting your cell phone (only with a $20k car)
I'm at about 40k miles on my car now, I'll probably look into this once I get a little closer to 50k |

Can Subaru tell on our cars that the ECU has been flashed, even if its flashed back stock? Good to know! let us know you're impressions after a little while. Do you have the CVT? |
