Default Standing Mile event near Chicago?

I've searched and come up with a goose-egg. Are there any standing mile events anywhere near Chicago?

I know of two:

A "drag race", on a one mile long straight, where the point is to get the highest speed possible.

A "timed race",on a one mile long straight, where the point is to finish the mile in the fastest time possible.

Problem with a standing mile is a mile of roadway, essentially airports and tracks made just for it. I dont recall ever hearing of one in Chicago area

Try Lake Shore Drive between 12:30 and 5 in the morning. It's a bit over a mile, though.

^This is the version I'm most refering to, while either would work. I see fellow Subaru owners in FL and TX doing this, but I've never seen anything around here.

And yes, an airport is the best venue. The race is a mile long, and frankly, you should have at a minimum 1/2 mile to stop, if not more.

I'm curious as to how much interest there would be in organizing such an event...

Yeah, but instead of 4 wheels on your car, you'll have about 50 pieces.

Some peices will be human most likely

I would think that local private airports would be open to an event like this for the right $$$..

LOL. If you find an airport with a mile and a half long runway:

-They will have to be willing to shut down the airport for this activity.

-Good luck getting them to agree to use their runway for an activity like this.

-Most airports are run by anti-car people.

-Once an airport agrees insurance will have to be secured for this event. Good luck with that.

-Insurance will require the competing cars to have a boatload of safety equipment with safety crews and equipment on site. In other words it would cost a lot of money to put on an event like this.

I'd love to see an event like this, but as an event organizer I can tell you it's just not going to happen.

If you want to do this you'll have to head to the Bonneville Salt Flats. Or do it illegally.

I'm certainly not disputing your concerns and the potential obstacles, but it is organized and done legally...

Ha ha. So Texas and Bonneville. That's two.

I'd like to participate if they had one closer also.

Also, I've seen one advertised in Miami. But yes, very few events from what I've gathered.

I've wondered how much interest there would be in an event like this. Grissom AFB has two 12k ft. (roughly 2.5 mile) strips. Perhaps they would be willing to host. SCCA autocrosses there all the time...

Texas Standing Mile event entry cost:

$200 for Saturday and Sunday - unlimited runs.

Yikes. I'd just like to make a couple of runs, but I figured it would be an expensive event to compete in. I'm sure their insurance is very expensive and they have to have a lot of safety equipment and personnel.
