Question which automatic would you choose?

what is your opinion...i will hopefully have a large enough down payment for a new car in about 3-4 months...looking to spend about 22K-25K

these are the cars i am looking at...originally i wanted to get the WRX w/ auto...still do...but since i will be using it as a daily drive (dont know how the turbo lag will effect).... plus gf doesnt like it...just weighing my options...plus i signed up as a member of imba.com so in about 3-4 months if i still choose can get it at invoice......

2002 Suby WRX w/ 4 speed auto (24k)
2002 Suby RS 2.5 w/ 4 speed auto (18k)
2002 Nissan SE-R w/ 4 speed auto (about 19k)
2002 Nissan Altima w/ 4 speed gated auto(25k)
2001.5 VW Passat GLS w/ 5 speed tiptronic (21k - 25k either GLS or GLSv6 w/4motion)

my friend can probably get me a 2001 Honda Civic EX w/ 4 speed auto for about 16k...this is the car my gf wants me to get since she believes it is more practical and she thinks the WRX is too expensive...that way we can save $$$ for other stuff...

thanks

It all depends on the money that u have.
Civic no way, the ser is much better and much faster for only a bit more money. And i think 19k is the price for the spec-v sentra. The base se-r will be around 17 grand. And u get an awesome stereo with that car too. If u want luxo get the altima or passat, if u want all around performance get the wrx. But sounds like your on a budget so i would get the se-r. But dont let your GF tell you what to do

I'd say WRX because I'm biased. I've ridden in the new WRX and LOVE it.

With that said, here are my UNBIASED opinions.

I'd go for the WRX if you can convince your gf about the looks. If not, probably the Nissan Se-R. 170hp is enough for that lil' car. I haven't a clue about the VWs, but personally I'm not much for VWs, so I'd rather get the Nissan if the WRX is out of the picture.

The Civic? Yes, practical, but everyone has one, and they're easy to steal. Not to mention they have no power.

2001 RS! But from your list, probaly the SE-R. Is it a 4 speed or 5? because the MT should have 6 right?

yea...in kinda a tight positon...gonna get married in about 1-2 yrs...so have to save up for that...so only gonna have one car that we both have to share...on top of that...most likely a mortgage too...already have about 9k for downpayment...want to save up to 15k...

my other weird way of thinking...is that my imba.com (subaru vip progarm) 6 month probation period ends in about 4 months anyway...plus subaru only offering 2.9% financing for 2001 models...but i heard that ends in may so maybe just maybe they offer new rates that will include 2002 models...maybe if i am really lucky they will offer the same rates as Isuzu (zero % financing for 60 months)....no wonder Isuzu sales jumped up 50% compared to last years sales...

garface - the SE-R will have 4 speed auto and 5 speed MT...the spec V version gets the 6 speed MT plus 10 extra HP & HLSD

I dunno.

An automatic requires low-end punch because you can't downshift easily, or, heck, at all. If you're driving in traffic, you want instant throttle response that is tough to get from a turbo.

The only car you have listed with PROVEN low-end punch is the 2.5RS. Plus, it'd probably be the cheapest, other than the Civic, and with 4 doors and the same chassis as the well-received WRX...

Hey, that'd be my choice. And the mods are already there. I went and saw the new-body WRX and 2.5RS in person for the first time (in America at least!) and they grow on you. Especially in sedona red.

Depends on how important your GF's opinions are to you. And how important driving a specific car is to you.

Considering your current situation, I'd go with the Honda Civic(unless you're really opposed to the idea of owning one). You'll save money for the upcoming wedding/honeymoon and the future home purchase and keep your Lady happy.

You gotta keep your priority straight

On the contrary, the WRX auto is EASY to downshift (3rd gear is right there below the D, and it downshifts automatically anyway when you punch it )

And after driving around in my friends Auto Rex after break in... Its freakin awesome! I dont care about all those anti-auto statments, its GREAT! I could even feel the VTD under the extreme drifts he was doing Im honestly thinking that if I could get a rex, I'd screw learning the stick and get the auto (Not for the RS though)

Buy the Civic. It gets better gas mileage, and runs on the cheaper standard gas. It will also last as least as long as anything else on your list with good resale value.

Keep up good maintenance on it, pay it off early, and then trade it in on the car you really want. You will be way ahead in the long run. Plus it will make your gf happy, and if your gf isn't more important than your car, you shouldn't be getting married.

mav1c: a minivan? c'mon...
I had to trade my manual OBS for an automatic due to a problem in my left foot that I am certain is from pushing a clutch for 30 years... I like shifting but can't stand the pain anymore. And I do know it's no fun to clutch in heavy traffic. My 2002 OBS is NO minivan!!!

Get the RS. It doesn't require premium gas and will be A LOT of fun! Besides, it will turn heads because every Tom, Dick and Harry doesn't drive one!! It's cool to be different.

I think I would go for a Sig Sauer automatic in 40 cal. and shoot myself before I would buy any of those cars with an automatic transmission.

mav1c - minivan - no way...dont like big gas guzzlers....trying to save $$$...;-)

uktena - so what car would you suggest in automatic???

like most of the guyz say and i believe i have to set my priorities...i can't get a car that my gf wont be able to drive and i refuse to getting into a arguement with her about MT....since we are in a relationship there will have to be compromises and this is one....another reason is living in NYC w/ traffic sux...plus many more...

Thanks Guyz for all the great input...:-)

IMHO:
I would get the WRX, but thats cause i already got one. I used to street race old school muscle cars, mine had a 3spd auto tragic. I love my stick and will never go back, but 70% of the old schools got autos in em (cause punks like me blew up the manuals back in like 1978)and you cant tell me those cars don't get up. Its all a matter of knowing your cars best shift points. And that manu-matic garbage.... that ***** is week, I drove my buddies girl friends eclipse GS with manumatic... G_A_R_B_A_G_E! Dont waste your time or money sweating about it. Just invest in a shift kit, I know they offer a full manual valve body for my old Detroit iron.

just my 2 cents,
DREW

If you MUST purchase an automatic, of the cars you listed, I would go for either the WRX or the Passat V6 depending on the type of car you really want. They are very different types of cars and are both very good for what they're intended.
But I still say, unless you have a physical limitation, drive a substantial amount of time in bumper to bumper, or have some other overriding situation, all you pansies should learn to drive a manual!

What's up with the auto man? why do you want a sports car if you want to drive automatic? "only in america"!!! it just doesn't make any sense whatsoever.
As Mav1 mentioned you should perhaps get a minivan or something. foresters could also be a good choice

Auto?!!! Well, at least the Passat has a triptronic.

SE-R is tempting... Depends on what the automatic performance is like. Japanese cars usually suck with autos.

thanks Kostamojen & others...for your input...looks like the auto for WRX is not as bad as everyone thinks....looks good to me...

Plus...i wish certain people will remember that this is a car...and that having a automatic is not automatically bad...it's my choice and you should learn to respect that...it's a convience i am willing to sacrifce for performance...

must i justify my decision to you!!!....i already have told you why i want to get a automatic...so if you want another freaking reason how's this....my father who will most likely live ME and Fiance in a new house that i will be purchasing & doesnt know how to drive a MT (neither does my GF)...does that make him less of a man...NO!!!...not in eyes...he has provided a roof over my head, put food in mouth, clothes....now it's time for me take care of him......oh did i mention he had 4 strokes and had a quad by-pass surgery recently....maybe next time he has to drive himself to the doctor or my gf has to drive him...i will tell them sorry but you have learn to drive a MT...yeah rite....i will do everything in my power to make it more convient for him and my fiance...

sorry for the rant...

Someone always has to turn this into an auto vs. manual debate.
Kinda like when someone post about drag racing and someone else says drag racing sucks, blah blah blah. NYCshopper don't let 'em get you down.
My wife doesn't even want to learn how to drive my manual. If we're on a trip and I can't drive for some reason, we're SOL.

Drew - All "manu-matics" aren't created equal. I heard those DSM ones are some of the worst. If we ever get the sport-shifter over here we would be able to compare.

Dennis
