2002 Wrx Swap Costs
I have a 2002 Wrx that I cant decide if I want to sell or not. I love the car, but id love an sti drivetrain.
Anyone know what the actual cost would be to make this happen? I would want the Sti motor and Tranny... DCCD and Brembos and all that arent as important. It would proably be cheaper to just buy an sti... but since I have the car payed off, I figured I would ask. Thanks!

I was thinking something along the lines of finding a part out car here on nasioc for the swap... and just buying what I needed. I would imagine it was cheaper that way.

^ its called a hybrid conversion, there are definalty threads on here about it, lots of people have done it. i think that the STI swap would be easier and be more reliable. but i have done neither.

The price runs the gamut from $0 to the gross national product of Burkina Faso and everywhere inbetween. There is no average.

Here is another thing that people fail to think about when thinking about swapping a bugeye with Sti drive train vs. buy a Sti the insurance cost.
lets say the Sti is $100 bucks more a month it will add up. |

keep the buyeye man...atleast its paid off,and you will make out better..
WRX paid off 2.5 shortblock - 2K+ drivetrain -(not sure) used sti 2004/05 - 18-23k higher insurance another bill so in my eyes even though the swap maybe expensive...it will still benifit you to just mod your wrx.. *prices maybe off a little but you get the point * |

thats how i feel and why i havent upgrades to an sti also... 1200$ extra a year in insurance is going to cost 5 grand if i keep the car for 4 years.. just mod your wrx as u can afford too... also u can sell your engine and drivetrain for a bit of money if u sell it before u mod it.. make back a couple -3 grand even i bet.

my 2.5 hybrid is going to cost me about $3500.00 total for a full build (to support a fairly large turbo). Drivetrain will cost an additional $4500.00+ for parts.
The only reason why I'm doing it this way is to have a STied bugeye wagon, if I had a sedan I'd buy the STi and swap the bugeye front end on it. |

You can buy the entire sti motor, drivetrain, brembo's, hub's ecu for 12,000 total with about 20,000 mile's on it. If you have that kind of money you can afford an sti.http://y2kimports.com/parts04to06sti.htm
Check it out. |

Unfortunately that's the only reason i got a wrx instead of an sti. i could afford the actual sti just not the insurance. im 24 with no accidents/tickets and it was still around $275 a month for an sti. my wrx is $189 per month. sux but that is life

Damn... the more I think about it. Maybe I will just deal with my worn paint and not amazing motor. Maybe I will just slap in a new clutch and get the paint fixed on my hood.
I'll Just have to pretend it doesnt have 100k miles lol |

keep the bugeye save for your swap. is your car stock? if so then do a vf39-43, or 18g swap and you will be happy for a bit!

^^^ Agreed, I would say location is more important than anything else. I live In Queens 5 minutes from the Whitestone and Throggs Neck bridge and Insurance is extremely high.
