Default dohc vs sohc vs phase I vs phase II

Ok, so i'm trying to buy a new engine for my99legacyoutbackwagon which i know has the 2.5ldohc i think. I have heard that some 99's came with the sohc motors and I would like to know which one i have. The biggest issue i have is with sparkplug wires and coilpacks. My engine has the male pronged coilpack which i guess are from the SOHC motors which makes me think I have a later year 99lob with the 2000+ motor. but i'm not sure. is there a way to check this stuff out with the vin or something stamped on the motor. I've tried searching and everyone was "well I think" or "should be" but i'd liek to know before i drop $1500 on a rebuilt engine.

thanks..

-ben

Three pullies = SOHC (1 crank, 2 cam)
Five pullies = DOHC (1 crank, 4 cam)

...? Have the guy pull the timing belt cover off.

^^^What he said except you don't need to pull the covers, just lookm at the covers on the front of the engine.
Two big dimples on each side = DOHC, a single dimple on each side = SOHC.
Oh, and this is on the front of the engine.

As to the description of the coil pack for SB ID, no go. I had the same coil pack on my 98 phase-I DOHC.
