I haven't seen that. Anyone have pics?

You can use any synthetic you like. Last winter I was using 4 qts RT6 and topping off with Subaru Syn 5W-30.

Exactly. And while not on the list, spirited driving falls under severe conditions too. So unless your doing all highway cruising the oil should be changed at 3,750 unless you have UOA's proving your oil can go longer in your exact situation.

You doubt the spirited driving falls under that category or that UOA is a good way to evaluate longer drain interval?

That's your call. I'm just not willing to save the $30 for an oil change every 3 months when I'm spending $55 when I get gas. At least not without a UOA.

Subaru of America has allowed 7,500 intervals since mid-2011 MY.

http://drive.subaru.com/sum12_QuickStops.aspx

Yes, this is on 5W-30 and, as noted by others, the manual only refers to 5W-40 CONVENTIONAL for replenishment only. There is no such thing as 5W-40 conventional!!!

To those running Motul 5W-30, it is not API SN certified. IMO, this is a good thing but some people are afraid of not running SN oil. A dealer will not ask you if your oil is SN or not. Motul Eco-nergy is a thin 30 weight and is SL rated with a stronger anti-wear package. X-clean is a thick 30 weight that meets Euro ACEA A3 specs like GC. It also has a nice shot of zinc and meets API SM specs.

Amsoil OE and XL lines are fully API SN / ILSAC GF5 certified.

Mobil1 5w-30 API SM shears from just shaking the bottle, but the API SN has shown decent uoa results in a WRX. Check bitog. There's just not much data on it.

Rotella T6 meets API SM specs for gasoline engines.

Royal Purple xW-30 API SM has been shown to shear like Mobil1 and EVERY other Energy Conserving 5W-30. RP High Performance Street is their good non-girly man oil.

Reflash your ECU or mod your car and your powertrain warranty is out the window anyway. Warranty schmarranty. Buy M1 5W-30 for the receipt and exchange it for M1 0W-40. Not that I condone this behavior.

To those that think one or two random $30 uoa's are useful in comparing wear between brands, this is not true.

http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/used-oil-analysis/

Note that the manual says that 5W-30 synthetic is required for "optimum engine performance", not that 5W-30 API SN is required for warranty coverage. BTW, there is no industry definition of synthetic. It is only a marketing term.

-Dennis
The bold sentence up top would be a good thing for new 11-13 subaru wrx owners looking to stay with a 5w30 and in compliance with their warranty.

There needs to be a new thread stickied with the now available 5w30's that are good like this Motul X-clean 5w30

^ Yep looks like X-Clean is a good candidate since its a thick 30wt. Been going nuts trying to figure out what oil to buy lol

Edit: is the Motul energy/resource conserving?

Edit2: does not look like it. Would the dealers have an issue with this?

Depends what you mean by fine. It's a Resource Conserving oil designed for fuel economy. The good Castrol 30 weight is Edge SPT 0W-30 (aka German Castrol/GC) which meets Euro ACEA A3 specs for shear stability, it has the old API SL additive pack, and meets a whole slew of German manufacturer specs.

If you drive like an old lady then Castrol Edge 5W-30 is fine. Want an oil that meets Porsche, VW, Mercedes, and BMW specs, then go for German Castrol 0W-30.

Ok I am not understanding these "rip off" comments, ~$70 will be barely more than what you will pay for good oil and a filter.... That is a really good deal, my VW was ~$100 at the dealer when I used to get it done there.

Plus this is for a 2013 subaru wrx.... they were not meant to be wallet friendly vehicles.....

What?

4 quarts of royal purple is only $50, and an oem filter is $6.

What a rip off for that thin a$$ oil.

I'd pay the $5 per quart for Mobil 1 Extended 5w30 (when it goes on sale) before I'd buy Royal Piss.

When I change my oil myself, it costs me about $41.

5 quarts of Mobil 1 Extended 5w30 (bought on sale) and a Subaru oil filter (bought by the case on eBay)

I think my point has been lost, what I'm getting at in a round about way is if you are in the financial position to afford a 30k+ vehicle being charged $70 for an oil change isn't unreasonable in the least. Which is why I own a POS

Don't get me wrong I am all about saving money but still..

Do you think I change my own oil solely because of the money savings?

Hell no...I do it because:

a) I enjoy working on my own car

b) I don't trust the people who do oil changes at the dealership/Jiffy Lube

I use motul and it costs me $51. I do it because I enjoy it and because I hate to go to the dealer, spend $70 for oil that may not be as good, and then wait an hour or two, when I know they are spending most of that time not working on my cAr. Nothing worse than having an appt at. 10, then have your car sit outside till 10:45 before they start. Then they leave it to drain for like 10 mins and send you on your way.

Personally I am much happier popping the valve on my fumoto open letting it go for an hour while I have some coffee on my couch. Then coming out and swapping the filter, filling it up and being on my way.
