Well this was nice of you to say...."Or perhaps JustyWRC, SoADealer or some of the other kool-aid sipping NASIOC fans will."

Well, I don't partake in any other forums and, at this moment, have mixed feelings about being specifically mentioned and insulted in one. Oh well, I guess.

I am also interested, however, in what competition looks better. They only had a Pilot at our training and in the short 1 lap in it, can see a couple blaring shortcomings compared to the Ascent(though the Pilot still felt fine enough. I rode in it over to the "track"). Namely visibility, power, and that thing ROLLS like crazy in a turn. I would have liked to have had the other cars they are considering competition. They did not mention the CX-9; but, did the Nissan Pathfinder. I would have switched those two myself.

CVT junk hooked up to either a torque monster engine killing reliability or a torque monster engine Subaru neuters to save the CVT. Ascent and Pathfinder immediately off the list.

IMO, unless both Ascent and Pilot went through basic 0-60 runs and someone wrote down respective trap speeds at the end of a classic 1/4, I think we can only form opinions. Not backed by hard data.
Same with body roll, I understand it may not inspire confidence, but roll alone says very little about grip/traction through corners.
Again, both cars would need to go through a slalom, figure-8, skidpad and so on.
We'll know soon enough though.

Absolutely. And I am one to say someone needs more than a test drive. I do miss those type training events. And in that short lap with the "lack" of power compared to the Ascent....well, that was my first time driving the current style Pilot and my "throttling" probably wasn't in sync with Honda's weirdness(very touchy IMO). But, I did try to move my foot in an equal manner to have that comparison. The "rolling" is blaring. Plain and simple. Once you feel it, any paper numbers won't matter. Visibility was a given. No one beats Subaru. The Ascent should do very well on the power front against it's competitors though. Claims so far are that it's faster than most. It has more torque than all the listed V-6 competitors as well. Like you said though, we'll see soon enough. But, we are sold out of pre-orders going in to our 2nd allocation so far. I have talked to a couple of those that said they made their decision based on the MT article. We will have a test drive event Monday and I suspect more orders by the end of that day.

Okay, I'll bite. To be honest the CVT hating comments are getting little old, (except the complaints of the CVT on the WRX and XT, I can understand those). The CVT in a reality is well suited for daily drivers (most of Subarus vehicles). They return good efficiency and has been reliable thus far. I was almost swayed not to buy my 2012 Impreza due to all the unfounded complaints regarding the CVT. Most of which revolve around "meh, it sounds really weird and boring" (then the same reviewer complains that Subaru has too much cabin noise). Yes, it sounds different, you get used it. That's the sound of a engine staying is a suitable rpm range, that's a good thing. If you like hearing the engine run through the rpms, go back a couple decades and buy a 3 speed. Subaru had to do something to meet the CAFE standards, CVT is where they went and to be honest it makes sense for them in *most* situations.

The Ascent is going to be just fine with the CVT. I will admit that have some reservations of towing on CVT, though the more I do it, the less apprehensive I've become. I've towed utility trailer loaded with mulch and other things multiple times with the Impreza without issues. I've also made half a dozen trips towing a 16ft expandable travel trailer with a 2016 Outback. Now obviously that's a small data set, but that's my personal experience this far. With the Ascent the CVT should finally get a good test as there will be a good amount people towing with that vehicle. I hope it proves reliable as I am gonna be one them.

I was super reserved about a CVT...The FXT I nearly forget has one with how good the programming is. Only time it acts like a CVT is in low throttle situations. In S# it's virtually indistinguishable from a traditional 8 speed. In fact...I'd say it shifts faster and firmer than our 2015 Genesis Sedan which actually has an 8 speed.

Once you've driven one with the newer programming I'm not sure what there is to hate on..other than its torque limitations.

Just wondering why you would take the time and effort to post a review if it is meaningless.

Simple - to provide a non-salesperson opinion about a vehicle I am indifferent about as a consumer (perhaps with a slight bias toward ignorance given lack of interest). This way I'm indifferent both professionally and personally. Brand, econobox or luxury (whatever that means in a case of a machine) and any imaginary implied status are unimportant to me. It's a tool and a depreciating asset as soon as it rolls off the production line.

I'm in for the video reviews that are supposed to start trickling in over the next few days...

Interesting as the CX9 is slightly longer and taller but the Ascent is wider on the outside:
Ascent 4.998 x 1,930 x 1,819mm
CX9 5,075 x 1,960 x 1,716mm

CX9 has fantastic reviews.

We drove the CX9 and it was pretty nice. The reason why we crossed it off our list is we want captain chairs for the 2nd row and 3 seats in the 3rd row, both are not a possibility with the CX9.

Mazda designs are superior to Subaruís, pretty much since always. The CX9 looks great.

Subaru could learn some things about taillight design.

Ascent is better at the things you buy a 3-row SUV/CUV for. If it comes close to or matches CX-9 in driving dynamics, itís having your cake and eating it, too.

I agree with Chanoís comment re exterior design, though. Ascent is fine enough, but CX-9 is fiiiine. But, for me, thatís a very low priority... as long as I donít cringe every time I look in the driveway.

I can't tell if you people are angry at each other, Subaru for making a new vehicle, Mazda for making a good vehicle, or life in general! Chill, your blood pressure is going to make your hearts explode. Then who will be not driving the SUV's you are all not going to buy?

I have a deposit down on the Ascent, I'm sure it's going to be a terrific replacement for our town and country. Can't wait to see it.

Amazing the difference in what people like. I do think the current Mazda's look better than they have in past; but, do no think they look better than Subaru currently. I do agree with the taillights and thought they were going the right direction with the Impreza, then they had to screw it up; but, there are a couple CX-9s in my neighborhood and I think it's unattractive from the rear. Like, quite unattractive. I do wish Subaru would make them a touch more edgy. Why entice customers with a really edgy concept(that's why you're doing it, right?), just to give them very little of that.
