How important is a 15,000 mile service?
I'm approaching 15,000 miles and I was just wondering what exactly is involved if you take your car to the dealership for their 15,000 mile service. It's 300 bucks at my dealer and I was wondering if it's even something I should have done there. Thanks for any input.

I had that done a few months back. Basically, they check up on almost everything on the car, lube it up, and tighten your e-brake (which I think is a good thing). Your maintenance manual should be able to tell you. Hope this helps.

I blew by 15k and didn't think too much about it. I did take it to my local place and have them take a look at it. They said all I need is the fuel injection cleaned.
Sounds like some BS...especially for $300 ! |

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
I must admit that $300 sounds a bit too much, considering what they do. According to MySubaru.com: Replace: Engine oil Replace: Engine oil filter Inspect: Disc brake pads and discs, front and rear axle boots and axle shaft joint portions Perform: Inspect brake lines and check operation of parking and service brake system Inspect: Clutch operation Inspect: Steering and suspension You could probably get it done at a local mechanic for around half that. As long as you save the bill, they can't deny warranty coverage. |

For $300 I'll inspect anyone's Scooby, detail it, and take the owner out to lunch!

There was a really good article on Edmunds.com about differences between "Required Service" and "Suggested Service." Your owner's manual and the manufacturer will tell you what the required services are, but most dealers will perform "suggested" services unless you specifically request only the required service. What they perform and how much they charge will vary quite a bit from dealer to dealer.
Are the suggested services a good idea? Depends. Do you plan to keep your car for more than five years? If so, you might want to consider some of the extras your dealer performs. Things like engine and coolant flushes can certainly extend the life of your engine. It's a good idea, though, to know ahead of time what they are planning to do. There may be several things you can do yourself for much cheaper (nobody should have to pay to have their fluids topped off). Jordan |

All good comments above. It's you first 15k and the car is new. I say do an oil/filter change and inspect the rest yourself. It's not hard and anyone that stays on top of one's condition of the car, on a ongoing basis will know if there is a problem or not (i.e. brakes, clutch, steering, suspension etc.).
If you want just wait until the 30k service intervals for the dealer. Even then you can do most of the work yourself or use a trustworthy independent. It seems the 60k is the only major service that you may want to take it to the dealer. |
