Teaching a friend to drive manual in my car. Good idea?
Anyways, my clutch is on it's way out. I'm getting a new one in less than two weeks under warranty. Anyways, I got a friend who doesn't know how to drive a standard, and since I'm getting a new clutch, might as well teach her right?
Besides stalling and gear grinding, anything I need to worry about?

Meh, not saying much for Subaru reliablity if someone cant learn to drive stick in it. On a 200,000 dollar Porsche, yea bad idea. On a 20,000 dollar station wagon...go for it!

It's a "her"? ttiwwop and then we'll decide.
But if you don't care what happens to the car, it's just up to you. I know when I was trying to learn on my friend's manual Matrix, I certainly wasn't doing him any favors.... |

i taught my gf on my 1 year old 06 WRX. The only bad part is that with the clutch already going, it could lead to an unrealistic driving experience if it's too badly gone.

How are you getting a clutch through warranty?
Isn't Subaru just gonna call abuse and make you pay? Sometimes they'll go 50/50 with you as a sign of good faith, but 50***37; of dealer price is the same or more then a performance shop will do it for. BTW, 3 people learned on my car, plus a refresher course by another person...let me tell you, its a lot of abuse and I wouldn't recommend. |

I learned on my Suby, picked it up in 10 minutes. No gear grinding, just a couple of stalls.

If I was in your position, I would teach her. Just make sure shes always on the clutch so it screws that up and not your trans gears. Besides, who knows what she might reward you with if you take the time to teach her. Be patient, dont get angry/yell at her when she screws up(assuming she will) and make sure your in a big wide open lot where she cant hit anything.
Besides all that, just have some fun and some good advice and she'll be shifting smoother and faster than that automatic mercedes benz with the bleached blonde, fake tanned, talking on her cellphone girl with the huge bug looking sunglasses that being oblivious to everything nearly took out half your car at 40mph in a parking lot. |

When I taught my gf, we went to a large empty parking lot on a school campus. I had explained to her ahead of time how it worked, when I drove I would say "clutch, shift, clutch out, gas" and made sure she paid attention. Then, driving down straight streets, I let her shift while I drove. Basically, "ok, we're going from 3rd to 4th. Ok, clutch in, shift" and I'd let her get used to making the motions. When I let her actually do it herself I kept my left hand on the E-brake (just in case) and my right hand near her right hand to slam it into nuetral if I had to. First I made her let the clutch out to feel where it grabs, then told her to give it a little gas. She did well. She only stalled it when learning to go from a stop uphill.

I'm teaching her in the next few weeks or so, she wants to learn this is how I'm going to teach her.
1. NO yelling, make her feel that it's ok if she screws up. 2. Show her how my footing works. 3. Show her how my footing goes with my hand motions (shifting) 4. Show her that using ONLY the clutch to make the car inch forward. *great tip btw* 5. (having in mind where it starts to inch forward is where to apply gas) have her put it in N and use ONLY her right foot and rev the engine to see how sensitive the pedal is. Have her rev to about 1K, then 1.5 and have her do it untill she doesnt over-rev 6. Have her put it in first, let the clutch go untill she feels it pull, then tell her to put some gas into it and let go of the clutch. Do this 9-10 times 7. After getting used to getting into first, teach her shifting into gears. It may take a little longer, but who doesn't mind being with a girl? Be patient and make her feel comfy, it'll be better for you too. She wont mess things up. |

I taught my friend Laura on my WRX, and I had only been driving it for about a week and a half (it's my first stick car as well, haha.)
I showed her how to let the clutch out to get it rolling with no gas a few times, then shifting 1-2, let her drive it around the parking lot and she did fine, no stalls. For driving in traffic and such she went out with her friends beater truck, but learning to start it in 1st is the hard part and she did fine in my car. If some of you are really worried about people blowing out your clutch, you must have some braindead or untrustworthy friends. |

It's harder to learn on an AWD car and if you do a burnout, your tranny will suffer.
