Default My gas cap broke and the dealer doesn't want to warranty it

The gas cap on my new FXT broke, with the white part which actually screws into the tank and the black "handle" part coming apart. My wife called the dealer to get a new one and they implied that it wouldn't be covered under warranty. They said it was likely "improper use." Now I'm no automotive engineer but I'm no neanderthal, nor is my wife, and we have screwed and unscrewed a gas cap a few times without nary a single problem.

I haven't talked to the service manager yet, but I hope I'm not going to get the runaround with a $15 part the first time I deal with subaru warranty stuff. Not an auspicious start. Hell, I'm ticked enough the gas cap broke much less having to deal with a warranty "issue" about it. Arrrgghh.

Regards,
Justin Wade

That doesn't sound right. If that's the way they are going to treat someone who just did about 25k worth of business with them.

For what its worth, in California a functional gas cap is required to pass smog inspection, I assume other states are the same. Its not like a broken heater knob, who knows your car might just explode into a ball of flames with a missing gas cap =) Tell the dealer its a safety issue and your car will not pass smog till they fix it.

Sorry to hear your dealer is giving you a hard time. For what its worth, my dealer is terrible too

This is a good point. The gas cap is also considered part of the emissions systems which carries a warranty. Failure to honor a smog/emissions related warranty should be considered a serious issue.

Before everyone goes jumping on the "this dealer sucks" bandwagon, I know you called but have you actually taken it in for them to inspect? I will not do warranty repairs over the phone,and I doubt they do as well.....

If you took it in and they declined coverage,go to a different dealer or talk to the field rep.

Agreed. MOST (if not all) of the time YOU need to be in their face to get results. It's always easier to say "no" over the phone. Time to get in their FACE!

Wrong again.

They have not seen it. Therefor they do not know if it is a warranty situation or not. Schedule an appointment,be there on time. Do not get pissy with them when being written up,as a matter of fact it is always best to play dumb. Describe the situation,do not waste their time with needless information (i:e the bloody torque specs that you read online,ANY download from this website)And wait for them to fix it for you.
It really is simple, people on this site go into the dealer all hot headed and bullish and wonder why they recieve "poor" service.

Based on his description, It should most definately be warranty. But put yourself in Subaru's shoes. Would you warranty something based on somebodies word that they did not break it, or would you want to look at it first???

I had the same thing happen to my wife's Forester, only it was her fault. I drove it to the dealer with a smile and dumb look on my face, and they replaced it with no questions asked. hondaslayer is right, a little kindness goes a long way to good working relationship with your dealer of choice.

I went to the dealer today to get the gas cap replaced. Since my wife had already had them order one they had it in stock. They looked at it, said, "huh, never seen it seperate like that before," and then gave me a new one under warranty. Took 45 minutes because they had to pull it into the bay to let a tech attach the strap that holds the gas cap on Silly me, I thought I could just grab the thing and run.

Anyhow, no run around at all. I just wish they had told my wife on the phone "we'll order the part and when you bring it in we will see if it is under warranty," rather than implying that it wouldn't be because it "is usually improper use that causes the gas cap to break."

No harm no foul, and I have a new gas cap.

Regards,
Justin Wade

Cool

wadejg - Always remember the 7 x P's and you will never go wrong in life.

P = Prior

P = Planning

&

P = Preparation

P = Prevents

P = Piss

P = Poor

P = Performance

I was taught that lesson in the Army (Aust) and it has stood me in good stead ever since.
