Sure you do. CQB. I have found that I use my back up sights more than my EOTech or scope because it's actually challenging.

See on my main blaster I have an Eotech, PEQ and pop up Buis. If my Eotech dies, I'd use my peq before Buis. Faster and easier. Hell in cqb the peq is awesome.

I was taught that PEQ/lasers were used for rapid target acquisition to aid, and not replace iron sights, which is why I don't use them. My eye naturally lines up with my iron sights, so I'm looking down them anyway and would rather be able to place my shots where I want them rather than in a general area.
I think it's just a personal preference thing. I've never been a big fan of laser sights, since, to me, they induce laziness and are not nearly as reliable when it comes to accuracy over a variety of distances. |

The only reason I would switch to my PEQ would be in CQB. The way my switches are set up, I can activate my laser before I can pop up my irons.
Irons are much more effective over a distance for sure. With NVG however, PEQ for the win over anything |

Question, or your suggestion, either way..
I am looking to add a bolt action to my collection, but wanting to stay as close to $500 as i can. Mossberg's have seem to caught my eye, 2 series in particular the 4x4 in a .308, or the MVP which only comes in a .223. I have found a MVP local that i can get for ~$550+tax, but i can't find any 4x4 to see how they feel. The only 4x4 i can find is online for $330 but then you have to pay the transfer fee, etc. My only hesitation with the MVP is that it is only a .223, and i am not sure how far out that round will be accurate and still lethal. I am mainly getting this rifle for paper, 300yrd+, but would like to take it out if i do go decided to hunt. Any opinions on either of theses 2 guns, or rounds? |

I was able to pick up a Ruger 338 Hawkeye for 399 back when CDNN had a deal on them. It's a great round without the kick of a magnum. Came with rings and while it does hurt if you sit at the range all day, it's a great rifle for hunting.

If you're going to step up to hunt, I'd go with a 308. 223 is fine, but for anything larger than a coyote, you're stretching what the bullet will kill. It's not like war and hitting a person. 223 can kill something like a hog, but it's not the best for the job because it doesn't have the knock down power. And when you're talking bolt action without the ability of a semiauto to drop a ton of lead downrange to make up for mistakes, misses, etc., the larger round will get the job done better.
I've hit 300+ lb hogs with my 308 off my target and it's still dropped them enough to give me a second kill shot without rushing. I've also shot a hog with my AR, and I never found it because it took off running like a scalded ape. 308 is a great all purpose round, whether it's for pushing paper, long distance shooting (500yds to 800 without ridiculous optics), and hunting. There are better calibers for certain applications, certainly, but for my money, between the two I'd get a 308. You can always build AR later. AR308s are a different, much more expensive matter altogether. |

Dont really like ar's any way, I have an ak, lol. But the .223 is way cheaper then a .308.. and the MVP has the ability to take ar magazines.. But i do agree that the .308 is a better round, and all of my other rifles and pistols are all in the .30 cal range as well, lol

223 is definitely cheaper than 308, no doubt. But it could be worse. I just tracked down some of the last 5.7x28mm ss198lf on the market at almost a dollar a round.
Damn Secret Service and their stupid contract decision to carry Five-Sevens are destroying the civilian market for ammo. But I did just get 200 rounds of 50AE for less than $1.20 a bullet, and that is a phenomenal find, considering that most of it is $36 and up for 20 rounds. |

I would spend a little more or watch for a Savage, Stevens, or Remington to come up for sale locally or on Gunbroker. With the Mossy you're really limiting the options you have for aftermarket gear without requiring a smith. I regularly see Savage Model 10s going for right around $500 online, and a lot of those dealers offer free shipping. At that price the transfer fee is going to be less than local tax. There's also a TX gun trading forum (can't find the link right now) that has some decent prices, some of which have some aftermarket bits on them already.

I like the looks of the mossberg 4x4 with the laminated stock, or the synthetic skeleton stock. It already has an adjustable trigger from 2-7lbs, 24" Free Floating Button Rifled Fluted Barrel with muzzle break, rail for sight, box magazine, recoil pad... I don't know what else it would need besides a scope.. |

Well, I need to find a new way to mount then. My fixed rings and scope now keep it where I can't get a view through the irons. When I had the Eo/Magnifier, I could swing out the magnifier and still catch the irons through the Eo view. Now, it's not lined up like that. This AR is more of a longer range gun, so I'm not *TOO* worried about it at the moment. I'm keeping my sights and all (since my front flip is my gas block) in case I figure out a different mounting solution for the Nikon. And in all honesty, I do prefer shooting with irons for some reason. I'm pretty accurate with them, although the Eo is a tad bit faster for target acquisition. Quote:
For my AR pistol, I was thinking of just using a Burris fast fire close to the front of the rail for targeting on that. It's too small for me to properly use irons, so I figure the forward mounted Burris and a laser would suffice. It's made for CQ while the above long barrel is my *ranged* AR. Quote:
I see the benefits of a laser in the right condition, but I don't consider it laziness...I consider it an advantage. If I bust in and someone is trying to shoot me, I'd rather be able to target and put them down faster. ****, I'd grenade the **** out of them if it was life or death +92784659823 |

Going to try to. My grandfather gave it to my dad and told my mom he wants it back.
I know he won't shoot it, hoping if I tell him I will use it if it can stay. That and my uncles are dicks. They would sell that **** if they had a chance. If anything I want it cause my dad has used it for all these years. |

That AICS chassis needs a can. And an Atlas.
Speaking of cans, I go fill out my Form 4 tonight! And then wait for 6 months |

The AICS folder is a great platform, but I think I prefer their new AX chassis. I was a fan of the Manners chassis before the AX and they're very similar. My Savage BA is an oddball, but somewhat close to the machined Whiskey 3 from KRG. However you can actually find some good take-offs from the guys upgrading to these online. Lots of solid McMillan's out there when they upgrade to an AICS. But you'd need a Remmy or Savage to buy those up without resorting to a lot of smith work to bed in the Mossy action. Again, if that's all you're looking for and you don't think you'll ever upgrade then the 4x4 will work just fine. From the reviews I've read it's just as accurate as the Remmy or Savage out of the box up to 500 yards.
