They've also got a nice rigid Salsa 29'er for $1kish. El Mariachi I think.

I don't know much about Scott, but I have always found MTBR.com to be a great resource for reviews.

I think the Salsa is a great choice. I have a Jamis Exile 29er, built fully rigid and absolutely love it. I'm not a huge fan of the Avid Mechanical's on the Salsa, but I'm about the only person I know of that feels that way. Geared or SS, a rigid 29er is about as much fun as you'll have on a bike on the cheap!

I've been thinking of picking up a 29'er....hmmmm

As for the Scott. Reviews look good. The design isn't anything revolutionary. And personally I like a design that places the shock and linkage lower, so it has a better COG.

yeah....I was wondering about how high the shock was. I guess it's up out of the muck (good thing). I've only had three bikes before....cheap GT starter bike, a Cannondale M1000 and then a Delta V (front Headshok). I'm wary of squishy bikes w/o a lockout and I love the idea of the Salsa...big wheels, rigid.

Well...those 2 bikes can't really be compared. Not really sure if you are. Even if it's a 29'er, a full rigid bike is going to have nowhere near the compliance of an FS.

My Trance has the shock about as low as it could be. I just put a Lizard Skin over it to keep the muck out. I LOVE that Trance. They did change the design a little on the newer models, but I think that was just to give it a little more travel.

Similar to mine:

The days of the rear lockout are just about gone. As suspension design has progressed, pedal induced bob has all but been eliminated. I bought a 2009 Giant Trance X2 in December and absolutely love. Super plush 5 inches of travel, and the maestro rear suspension really seems to work. The Fox RP2 is all that bike needs with rebound, and your choice of propedal on or off. The bike has a great parts spec too at $2600 +/-. The bike just won another Mountain Bike Action Shootout as well. I bought it because it was in my price range...but it has exceeded my expectations at just about any price range. Let's face it, at the price points above 4, 5, 6K, you are just shaving grams, not adding much performance (except for wheels!!)
But back to the Salsa. It's amazing how nicely a steel 29er rides. Those big wheels just seem to roll, and the steel frame really takes the edge off.

Am I the only one who rides a $400 bike.
This is a Subaru Impreza forum, right? With the money you guys throw around on bikes, I would expect you to be driving S-class Benz and Bentleys

It's supposed to be sunny this weekend. Maybe by Sunday the better draining trails will be OK.

As long as you're out there, it doesn't really matter what you're riding. It's all good.

The way I ride, A $400 bike wouldn't last long, and I honestly wouldn't feel too safe. The higher end bikes tend to be lighter, stronger, and more reliable, not to mention perform better. Trust me, you ride your $400 bike over some very rough terrain, then ride a well designed $2000-$2500 FS bike over the same terrain, and you'd be amazed of the difference. It's really like most hobbies/passions. Once you really get into it, you are drawn to the better equipment. Sure, you really might not need it, but you want it. How many times have you bought something that you don't really need for you car, but got just because you wanted it? Or how about your TV? You could watch TV on cheap little 13" tube, but I'm guessing you have something better than that. Maybe I'm just making excuses for for spending over $2K on a bicycle.

My bike started as an $800 haro that I picked up used for $350 with the frame in great shape...I then bought full LX components (sorry couldn't reason the price for the difference) and made it ride so much better for a budget build.

Buying last years forks on clearance, yada, yada...

I started on a $400 bike in 1991. I rode a '93 Cannondale frame for 13 years - just kept replacing components when they failed. Did a complete LX/XT rebuild in '00 as the Suntour XCPro gave up the ghost and the company was defunct by then. Sold it in '06 to fund my MINI purchase, knowing it was probably time to start anew with an MTB (13yr old aluminum = brutal).

This.

And I may have spent a lot of money on my bike, but I got a hell of a deal, so it's worth it, right? Plus, I've been riding (off and on) for about 15 years, so this isn't a passing hobby and it's good for my health.

So from my perspective, I'd rather drop the money on a bike than a turbo kit for my car.

that's cool. I'm not passing judgement, just making an observation. For me, I know I'm not GOOD enough yet, that my bike is holding me back. The guy I usually ride with has a very nice Trek full suspension bike $$$, and he's not good enough yet to leave me in the dust. So I'm ok for now.

If I showed up in a $2500 bike I'd be like the rookie autoXer that shows up in a tricked out STi on coilovers, then gets dusted by good driver in a stock Impreza L wagon.

I do have some limits on my bike. I'm not jumping off picnic tables or anything like that; I know it's not going to last doing that. And it does give me problems on the rockiest sections of trail (a certain section of Cascade Falls trail comes to mind) but 95% of what I ride (with others,) it's OK.

and btw, I do have a nice plasma HDTV, but it was on sale

this logic is flawed. there will ALWAYS be someone better out there. doesn't mean you can't appreciate and take advantage of better equipment. that rookie in the L would be SLOW.

I went riding at Difficult Run a few years back with some guys from a local bike company that makes electric assist models. One of the guys had a hybrid/cyclocross style bike from the 80's with 1.4" tires and a basket on the front and smoked us all. Doesn't mean I wasn't faster with my front suspension bike than I'd be with a rigid bike.

I would recommend rookies start out on a $400 rigid bike though. Two reasons - small investment in case you ride it once and never go back, plus you learn to choose a proper line, how to transfer weight and how to absorb impacts. If you buy a squishy bike as your first, you just bomb over stuff, without learning the technical skills.

it's the same for mt bikes as golf clubs. talent > gear.

Nah - I've seen plenty of people show up for their first ride on $1000+ bikes. Back when I was riding in HS on a $400 bike and I could barely afford tubes, I scoffed at them - but that's just immaturity. These days, I (and most people) am just happy to see people riding.

I've got a $20 yard sale mountain bike. Can I come play?

I was out at Wakefield today. Some areas are a little muddy but it wasn't too bad.

I had a question for you guys, just moved here from Idaho, and Im used to fairly hard packed dirt, and well, my tires arent even remotely cutting it here. What would you suggest? Just need to be able to fit on a 26 rim, the stock size is 2.20, but Ive got some wiggle room...

If it's an air shock, do yourself and it a favor and take the Lizard Skin back off. It'll trap fine grit against the shock's shaft and wear away the coating. The seals on modern shocks are good enough that boots are just not needed.
