Impreza WRX STi Where are all my Type RA's at?

I finally found my black Type RA and this car is awesome! It has been 12 years since I have had a Subaru ('09 STI), but this car has been worth the wait. It is my 4th Subaru ('98 2.5RS & '02 WRX too) and without question the best yet.

I actually had a '21 WRX on order as I am not a fan of the '22 yet and this car just popped up online nearby a week or two before my WRX was supposed to show up. I took one drive and I was hooked. The steering, suspension, and brakes are just amazing. (It could use a bit more power, but that is an easy fix.)

Looking back it is funny how different this car was from a normal STI when it came out, but I wrote it off because I thought it was crazy to pay $50k+ for an STI... and then the S209 came out. I guess Car and Driver setting a lightning lap 5.6 seconds faster should have been my 1st clue. Around corners- wow this thing is an absolute weapon!

Extremely rare in black too. I did not realize that only 19% of these were black so only 95 made in this color. I think the only STI more rare would be a white S209.

The last Subaru I had with gold wheels was my blue '98 2.5RS. I think I am getting too old for that, but the black with the gold looks pretty good to me. Reminds me of the old Lotus John Player Special Formula 1 cars. (Yes, I sure am dating myself here. lol)

I'm not so sure about the pink stripe on the back bumper, but it is growing on me.

I love the carbon roof. I know it barely lowers the center of gravity and shaves about 8 lbs off of the car, but it has to firm up the structural rigidity significantly. The steering just feels completely different in this car.

I really dig the look of the carbon spoiler too and the fact that it is adjustable. I read that it drops about 7 lbs. over the regular spoiler, but I just like the fact that it is easier to see out the back window.

My daughter really digs the Recaro seats. I just like the suede inserts and heated option this winter. Barely pictured, but even more awesome is the ultrasuede steering wheel. Who needs a heated steering wheel when you have ultrasuede?

398 of 500, but only 1 of 95 in black. Maybe this will keep me from wasting...err spending all of my disposable income on a car for once. Nah!

When I was a kid I always wanted a '92 VW GTI with the big bumpers, BBS wheels, and Recaro seats. I finally got my BBS wheels and Recaro seats, but I never thought it would be on a Subaru. These 6 piston Brembo calipers are amazing. Anyone else think they put a few too many "STI" badges on this car?

Yes, the 1st OG. Good to be back in a Subaru after all these years. How are you Bill?

That's strange with the pics. I included all the links off of Google photos yesterday and they were showing up just fine. Is there another host you recommend?

EDIT: And now all the pics are showing up just fine again... strange.

Doing OK I guess. I live in Beloit Now.. so fairly close.. the community has changed tho.. you'll see what I mean in due time..

CHeck to verify your images can be shared in your Google account. I see a size of the image and a big - mark in the middle.. if not you can try to use Nasioc's image hosting.. even thats kinda wonky at times...Maybe I will see you in the future..

I grew up in Janesville so I know the area. I know, everything is on facebook now.

It is a google work account and I did not see any settings I could change to make the photos shareable. I checked out Nasioc's image hosting, but it was limited to 5 MB and all my pics are more than that. So I just tried 12 different image hosting sites out before I found one that did not require a login, posts full size pics instead of links or thumbnails, and the pics do not expire. Post Image. Hopefully, you can see the pics now. I almost forgot how fun it is to try to post pics on this website...

You were the only other Type RA I saw on here. I respect the build man. I got crazy with mods on my last 3 Subarus, but I think I will keep this one a bit more modest (famous last words). Maybe it is because this car is as close to exactly what I have wanted all these years. Or maybe I am just getting old.

How did you grenade the transmission? Turn up the wick on the boost too high?

Car had issues from day one with 3-4. Went out during a track day with only a couple thousand miles on it. Subaru denied the warranty claim.

With stock power? That's a bummer and it seems odd. I tracked my 3 previous Subarus for years (including an '02 WRX) and I never had any issues.

It had a tune to run better on 91 octane (the RA stock tune runs terrible on 91). I was more worried about the engine than the trans, so I was surprised. Just one track day too, 3rd session was the failure. I suspected the trans was bad from the factory but others have noted issues with 3-4.

Not the one in the Enkei thread. Has a winter set up on it and looks to be snow on the ground. To each their own.

Actually thatís soap residue on the ground in the photo from a fresh wash. And unfortunately we use salt here in Michigan. Iím WFH so it wonít see a lot of use this winter. But Iíll have fun driving it when I do!
(Sorry for the thread jack OP)

You're not kidding about how the car runs on 91 octane. I thought there was something wrong with my driving, but it was impossible to drive unless you were in intelligent mode. In sport it would cut the timing so bad that it was herky jerky all the time. Fortunately, I still have a few 93 octane stations by me and it runs fine with that gas. I have never had a car with such a difference between 91 and 93.

Sorry to hear about your trans. Odd that Subaru would not cover it while under warranty. Mine seems to be fine so far. I will probably change the shifter for height and maybe the bushings to make the shifts a bit crisper.

Thanks! I ended up liking the black a lot better than I thought with the gold wheels. I thought I was getting too old for blue/gold like I had on my '98 2.5RS, but it is still a classic look. How cool is it that you have the 2nd to last one made? Nice!

I pretty much love everything 2.5RS, WRX and STi...but this is one of the few that I wish I owned. Rarely see them...but when I do, eyes are glued...

That's awesome! Me too, but I never see one on the road. I only know of one other in my entire state. Crazy.
