Oil Question
I realize this may spark huge debate, but my car is about to turn over 100,000kms and I've been reading a lot about oil recently. I want to know what locals are using.
I've realized the Mobil 1 I've been using is basically crap (HTHS of 3.1 for 5W30) I've read great things about Redline and would love to use it but it seems retarded expensive and hard to find. I also read that a lot of people are running Rotella T6 but because it only comes 5w40 it results in higher than ideal oil pressures. Is anyone using an economical synthetic oil available locally or at least in US big box stores that has HTHS numbers closer to the 3.8 of Redline in 5W30?

a little searching goes a long way. Lots of good info and locals talking about their oil and experience. |

I use ALL motul fluids for my car (engine oil usuall 8100 x-clean/300V only for beating time). It's been in all my cars and I've never once had a huge issue.
The only time I cycle'd in crappy oil was to flush out metal shavings from a previous project. For any basic car, I REALLY loved quaker bulk, but they don't have that anymore, so regular pennzoil yellow bottle is good for beaters. |

I'm past 200k and I just use cheap synthetic. Usually castrol edge from Costco. Ive sent in for oil analysis and have been cleared for 14k+ change intervals.
This makes me think that most users are changing way way way too often. And are unnecessarily concerned with brands/specs... But get an analysis done. You'll be surprised how much longer your oil can last. Last edited by timbits; 04-08-2013 at 02:10 PM. |

Kinda like how clean water can flow through pipes, but pipes eventually get clogged or dirty (1st time home owner, and it's annoying me lol) |

you have a 2.5i. It really isn't going to matter all that much. Just stick with an OEM weight oil and pick one. Everyone here hates mobile 1 so don't get that just so you conform to your peers.
I use castrol synthetic 10w30. Prior to that, pennzoil synthetic and dyno. Doesn't make a difference. And for someone to use something like 40 weight oil is silly. I installed an oil pressure gauge and I was a little surprised at how much pressure these motors have. Full warm, anything above idle I see at least 80psi. And obviously cold it's well over 100psi (don't actually know because the gauge stops at 100psi). I will be switching to 5w-30 next change. |

Redline 5W30. You can get it at Drivers Edge in BBY: http://www.driversedgeautosport.com/
Your NA motor does not need a high HTHS oil. |

Now if you owned a highly moded turbo Subaru or even a Porsche/Ferrari/Lambo, then your question about proper oil would be more valid/important. For what it's worth, I change my oil twice a year (6 months). Once in the fall and once in the spring on my 2011 STi. Spring = Rotella T6 Fall = German Castrol 0w30 Both I get at Walmart. Cheers, Jay |
