I haven't had too many issues like that, some with the no media detected but nothing a re-plug or reboot of the stereo didn't fix. All in all, if you want to go car play you are going to want to look into getting the stock dash piece from a 15. Make sure the temp controls can be migrated to the new piece and perform the install like it is a 15. I'll warn you the old harnesses probably don't work so you will have to hardwire just about everything right now.

What do you guys think about using components in the rear? Where could I mount/drill for a tweeter? Thinking back dash panel somewhere.... Feel like the back needs some more love, the door speakers just don't give you enough sound on their own.

You can do what ever you want to do, but just getting a decent set of coaxial speakers for the rear and a quality set of components for the front with a properly sized amp and a tuned system should get you by just fine.

Josepi22, I bet if you just use a better coaxial in the rear doors it will sound more full and balanced with the front. Thats where the majority of the mids and highs are coming from now due in large part to the tweeters up on the dash. The rear doors are acting more like just a woofer and don't have much presence.
I plan on upgrading the rear doors to a decent coaxial first when I get time. |

Alrighty... So I think I am ready to do a new stereo. I know I talked a lot about a sound processor but honestly why not get a better headunit if I am going to spend that money? Will order it tomorrow and do the install sometime next week. My plan is to use the carbon fiber dash OEM piece from the 2015 stis. a dash kit for the 15 and figure out the rest from there. I imagine the steering wheel control module won't be much different or the antena adapter if I need one. We will see, I don't mind winging it because eventually we'll figure it out. More to come.

^That's cool, Im looking forward to seeing what needs to be done. Keep us posted and we'll be with you every step of the way
One thing I wonder about is what about the back up camera, how to get it to display on new HU? As for the '15 CF bezel, it looks like you can just use the part that goes around the stereo and climate control dials. On the 15, the top part with the vents is attached with screws to the lower CF part. You should be able to retain the vent part (which looks better with the silver trim IMHO) from your 16 and just attatch it to the CF part from the 15.. Where do you plan on getting the bezel? |

The bezel I can probably find somewhere online, its part number 660650 and I think both the base and limited sti's had the cf one in 2015 right? |

Oh wait, looks like I was wrong. The 15 displays backup cam up on the dash huh?

Yeah, it shows on the 4" screen at the top of the dash. There is a thread in here somewhere about people who switched a wire or two around behind the HU to get it to display on their HK OEM screen instead of up at the top on the 4", so at least we know there is a specific wire for it..

Alrighty so I ordered a bunch of stuff and am waiting to hear from svdx on a harness for the rearview camera. So far this is what I got.
Pioneer SPH-DA120 AppRadio 4 (YAY Apple carplay) Carbon Fiber Replacement Dash Bezel (Part 66065VA000) - Looks better and the new bezel wont work with a HU swap Metra AX-TOYUSB-2 (Retain USB Port) Metra Axxess ASWC-1 (Steering Wheel Controls) Metra 95-8905B Double DIN Dash Installation Kit Metra 40-LX11 (Antenna Adapter) Axxess AX-TOY28SWC (This one is a toss up, It's supposed to basically convert the existing harness for steering wheel controls to a plug and play type setup with the ASWC-1.... We will see if it works) All is due in this week and I will probably do the install next weekend. Unless I hear from svdx soon I doubt I will be able to keep the camera at least for the time being. |

Awesome! Great work josepi22. Very much looking forward to your install. Question for you; will the 2016 top part of the bezel with the silver vent trim attach onto the 2015 lower part of the bezel?

That's the hope, we will see. I can't say I know for certain yet but I'm pretty sure it will. Which basically will mean we can use the 2015 dash kits like the one I ordered.

Newbie question
Hey guys!!! Thanks Joseph for your work.
I recently purchased, three weeks ago, a 16 WRX Premium CVT. I need to add some bass to this systems and do not want to pay the dealer for the kicker upgrades. I am looking at the Kicker hideaway sub as to eliminate wasting valuable trunk space and place the sub under my seat. Would anyone comment on the best way to connect this to the stock 6.2 in HU. I will also eventually replace the speakers and tweeters from stock. Does the HU accept a RCA plug? Thanks in advance everybody |

So when I went to Tokyo I dropped by the Subaru building and picked up a Levorg brochure as well as a Navi brochure full of JDM head unit options. Has anyone tried using a JDM spec head unit in any of their WRX/STi's? Doesn't even have to be the new gen, can be last gen as well.

- Taken door panels off and completely Raam Mat the doors. - Installed CDT Audio 6.5 HD speakers in doors. I made some adapters out plastic for this. - Installed CDT tweeters in stock dash spot with some adapters I made. - Ran RCA from head unit to the trunk - Ran power to Trunk - Used AE64 Harness to splice in a LOC for 4 channels With all this in retrospect the sound is fantastic with the stock head unit. It sounds just as good as an aftermarket unit. Unfortunately the functionality of this head unit is still awful. It's very lagy and UN-intuative. In the end I just couldn't live with it and will be replacing it with a NEX-4100. I wanted to call out a few "gotcha" though Metra 40-LX11 (Antenna Adapter) - if you use this you will not be able to use the "stock" XM antenna. If you don't care about using this and only require am/fm this will work for you. If you want AM/FM and XM you will need to purchase a "feeder cord" for a non-nav 2015 WRX. (Has a standard Motorola plug for AM/FM, and a FAKRA plug for XM) Axxess AX-TOY28SWC - This part just got here today. I am going to have to get back to you if this works or not. Metra AX-TOYUSB-2 (Retain USB Port). David Carter (ae64.com) says that the plug has changed and this will no longer work. He is looking into a solution. I talked to David about the stock 2016 Camera via email a few days back. So far not sure which wires carry the NTSC signal for the rear view camera. All that is known is that it's located in the "28 pin harness". Anyone else figured this out yet? - Randy Last edited by pwr4all; 07-27-2015 at 05:23 PM. |

After some exploration retaining the factory camera is going to be a bit more involved. It is going to require a voltage regulator.
I am currently working with someone who may be able to supply this. It's not going to be cheap. I am hearing 65.00 for this wired into a harness. - Randy |

Impreza Help
Maybe this is the wrong three but I bought a new 2015 sport premium Impreza and I want to get a CarPlay headunit.
Any thoughts on the parts I need to make this work. I would have a pro install everything. I just don't know what I need. Best Buy and car toys weren't helpful. Thanks, kris |

2016 WRX STI Stereo Replacement DIY
Hey Guys,
Sorry for the delay, just found out I am having a baby boy and so have been working on getting his room all finished and painted. Stereo came out great, sounds amazing and looks awesome too. I did a little update video midway through. The only thing I couldn't retain which you all know already is the rearview camera. Looks like pwr4all had the same convo I did with dave (If you figure it out keep me posted!) See my steps on page two of this thread for steps to remove the factory stereo or the link posted by BuckiWRX (http://techinfo.subaru.com/proxy/957...30SFJ301v2.pdf). Both should give you the right steps. Parts List (You will notice a few parts removed from my previous list, that is intentional): Pioneer SPH-DA120 AppRadio 4 (YAY Apple carplay) Carbon Fiber Replacement Dash Bezel (Part 66065VA000) - Looks better and the new bezel wont work with a HU swap Metra Axxess ASWC-1 (Steering Wheel Controls) Metra 95-8905B Double DIN Dash Installation Kit Metra 40-LX11 (Antenna Adapter) Metra 70-1761 (Wiring harness for power/speakers and other main connections) ALL OF THE THINGS! This is a view from the back of the OEM stereo/bezzel. You will need to remove the old temp controls to put them into the new bezel. Time to start wiring the different harnesses together. Everything is labeled and this should be extremely straight forward. For any specific questions feel free to PM me. Follow Color codes on back of the packaging for the Metra 70-1761 Follow instruction for 2015 wrx sti to keep steering wheel controls. It took me a few tries to get it to auto-detect and then still needed to configure certain buttons manually. Follow instructions for this one. http://contentdocs.installernet.com/...icle/12563.pdf A pic.... That was the hard part. I did a little update video at this point. Link below. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K5ex7kWTN70 After you get that all done, you just plug it all in! Configure the steering wheel controls and done! Mounted the mic here.... Ran the new usb cable through my console and into the same spot as the old one. Video also shows this if you need to see what I did. Mounting brackets go on just like they did for the 2015s, mount up just fine to the car. Here it is all mounted, nice and flush. I did nothing special, just used the kit. Put the bezel back on and your vents and BOOM. Looks beautiful. |
