Default Last gen iPod Classic not playing in 2015 WRX

Having a weird issue where my iPod Classic won't play music in my WRX after I've updated it with music on my computer and iTunes. The iPod shows that it's plugged in to the audio system, it still charges, and all the text from the currently selected song pops up on the WRX's screen.

Has anyone had this issue before? I wasn't able to get it to work at all this morning, even after resetting the iPod multiple times.

I don't have an iPod anymore, but mine worked fine for me in my 2016. Multiple generations too.

I think I ran into that problem with a few select songs and I believe it was because they were a different audio format than the others. Is it every singles song? Is everything mp3/mp4/aac?

FYI, sound quality was about 100x better when I used a USB drive over my iPod. Not sure why as they were literally the same files, but it was noticeably better on the USB.

The problems I've had with the ipod have always been intermittent. Unplug, replug, turn on, turn off and it goes away.

The things that come to mind are: unplug/replug usb (at either end), turn lock button on ipod off/on, do forced restart of ipod. One of those usually helps.
