Default 02 WRX 5 Speed Tranny Life

Folks. I have a modified car which is probably making 300+ HP. Everytime I step on the gas, I am very carefull about how I shift, to protect the Tranny. I road race (NOT DRAG) the car a few times a year. Assuming I am carefull shifting and keep an eye on how I operate the tranny, should I still be concerned about the tranny I have an EXEDY clutch and Flywheel on the car.

Next Steps

Assuming the 5 speed is going to break, should I go to a good gearset or switch to a 6 speed. I want scalability for the future if I decide to add more power close or above 400 HP.

Comments please.

Thanks

The Cobb Conebasher car was making 420whp on the stock tranny and lasted two auto-x seasons before it broke. Others have busted their tranny with stock power and claims of not driving hard. It seems to depend on whether or not your tranny has defects or not. You better plan your savings account with the idea that your tranny could break at any time.

If you want to run 400 whp reliably then you probably want the STi tranny or some type of dogbox setup. APS has a new gearset out that is rated for 320 ft-lbs if I remember right so its probably good for more than that.

Another option to consider is to trade for an STi. By the time you do all the swapping to get to that point you would probably be better off starting over with a better platform.

Been running a vishnu stage 2 for almost a year. No problems thus far.

When my gears do break, I plan on running STI RA v6 gears. The price is right($1500) and I like the gearing on them.

I have the STi RA V6 gearset and so far so good but I doubt its long term reliable anywhere near 400whp.

What is your setup or how much WHP are you making? How long have you had your gears installed?

I'm only running about 220whp and I busted first gear launching at an autocross. I never dropped the clutch but I did launch at around 5k every time.

I've had the RA gears with a Quaife front diff for about 5000 miles now. I also have the APS lightweight flywheel, stronger clutch and the STi tranny mount.

So it is safe to say that for Road racing, I should be fine with the RA gearset. Would you guys agree.

Maybe with 300whp, maybe. But at 400whp I think you probably need something else. I don't know how much torque Gary Sheehan is making but I think he's been through 3 stock gearsets on his road race car. I would be willing to bet he's not putting anywhere near 400whp down.

Vishnu Stage 2, 350 crank hp, 280 dyno pulls, 4 track days last season, 32,000 miles, never once dropped the clutch or ran the 1/4 mile. I was very kind to this tranny driving on the street, but 3rd gear let go last weekend. In the midrange (maybe 3K) of 3rd gear, I rolled on the power to pass a truck and heard the terrible sound of crunching metal followed by rattling as bits o'3rd gear settled to the bottom of the case. I was lucky that I had the other 4 gears to drive home with. I was just about to pull the trigger on the RA gearset so now my decision has been made for me.

YMMV
