Default WRX Top Speed Limits

Ok, Trying to help a friend/local mechanic make sense of his little brothers "tall tales". My friend currently has his brother's 2002 WRX Wagon in his driveway...it runs but smokes badly!

His brother tells him that he had it pinned at 160 MPH and that is when "things" gave out. I told him "no way"! Now, I know that mods may give us the power but I assumed there was a limiter at the infamous "140" I always hear about? Can this be bypassed or can EM remove it? He has told me the vehicle is stock except cosmetics but I have not had a chance to take a look at it.

Help me out with some facts that will help the mechanic who is not all that familiar with subies assist his idiot brother!

absolutely possible, STi's are limited lower than the WRX, but changes to the ecu will eliminate the limiter. stock would take a long time to get to 160.

I'm not sure what's going on with that car but I had my 04 wrx (stock at the time) at 147. It took a lot of road to get there.

A stock 5 speed has been clocked by car and driver at 147mph, and another at 145. At least in those testers there weren't limiters. There are various theories on the limiter. With a stage II and no limiter, it could easily see into the mid-high 150's. Your friend would have no idea if his car made it to 160 howver, b/c his speedo only shows to 140. If an sti can do 155, than a stage II wrx (pretty close WHP and a significantly lower cd) could see the same, if not more.

Wow, I am surprised! I have to believe it takes a whole lot of time to get to 160....if it actually did! No governor huh? I thought that was standard on all vehicles at some speed! Thanks for the info.

Regardless, the kid is an idiot. I don't care how wide open the roads are here in Montana....apprently he was driving at that speed for 30+ miles! I really hope he did some serious damage and won't be back on the road any time soon!

Sounds like the kid is trying to eliminate himself from the gene pool. I got pretty scared at 120, and I ain't ever gonna go anywhere near that fast again.

I got to 120 also and to get to 130, it takes a lot of road for those extra 10 MPH, so to get to 160, even in an STI must be super freaking hard and scary.

Car and Driver just tested an '05 WRX at 143 mph and said it was "drag limited". The wagon's cd is .37, which is higher than the .33 for the sedan, so you can bet that a stock wagon won't do 143, probably more like 140 or less. I don't have the calculations handy, but to add 20 mph to the top speed will be no easy task, you're talking bigtime mods.

Also, anyone that wants to dispute this, prove it with Radar or GPS, no bull$hi+ stories of seeing the spedometer at this or that speed, you all know that the stock spedo isn't accurate to 160 mph.

I've taken my car up to 150 (catless turboback and up pipe at the time) at which point the STi beside me just kept going and my car was going pretty darn smoothly

Don't wanna hijack the thread here but...

Has anyone heard a "screaming" sound at around 120 MPH? (05 WRX Stock in 5th gear)

I've only done it once, so I didn't really have time to analyze the sound. Maybe just the wind or is it a possible leak?

I don't hear the sound at the same RPM in lower gears...

On the topic however
I haven't gone past 125 -> Was running out of road

For those of you that like to spend time at near warp speed...where are the RPMS at when hurdling through space at 140+?

The only screaming I would hear in my Subie with stock RE92's at that speed would be me! Yes, I am a wuss!

Just under 6k on mine. I had my tach down half way through the mileage window. So I am guessing around 160ish and that was around 6700-6800 rpms. Im a Cobb stage 2.5. This was on a no traffic straight road here in OK we have alot of them.

3k in fifth is 70 mph, 6k should be 140. 7k should be 163 on a WRX, but I doubt a stock on could get there. Anything past 4th (120?) would be really, really slow.

Its your side mirrors. A common problem. They scream at high speeds. A little duct take with fix it right up
