i'm kind of inspired by the lil wayne thread to talk about a MC who is truly respectable. his wordplay is amazing, and he talks about whats really going on with a lot of depth and perspective. on top of that, his delivery skills are great, flows very well, etc.

examples:

thieves in the night
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_LQiuQ1xIBM

mos def- mathematics
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ycJ5m5Mt9JE

...real hip hop is not what you hear on TV

i've read a college thesis on one of his songs. its really incredible because it didnt come off the page like bull****.

with the acting and to me, especially, Def Poetry Jam, I love what he contributes to culture.

have you ever heard him freestyle?

the songs he has produced aren't too great. But when the man freestyles its jaw-dropping.

He's truly one of the best.

I have not heard him freestyle but I would say im a pretty big fan of underground/old-school rap. check out NonPhixion, 7L & esoteric or diabolic, jedi mind tricks, Dr.Octagon. i could go on. As for producers J Dilla, Rza, dj premier, dj q-bert. they're all amazing

Ah...you're on the outer edge of the underground. Get past the trendy crap like Mos Def and discover a whole new world. He, is nowhere NEAR being the best.

Atmosphere, Aesop Rock, Blueprint, Murs, Slug, Sims, RJD2, Del tha Funkee Homosapien, Immortal Technique...

Lil Wane perpetuates all of the things that build negative stereotypes for hip hop in general.

yes you can go way "deeper" into the underground and there is a lot of amazing talent out there....i dont think it negates the fact the mos def is a great MC, even though he's way more famous than people under the stairs

i know aesop, and rjd2. immortal just raps about the same thing in all of his songs and i swear he has a thesaurus right next to him to find the biggest words he can use in his songs. Big L's amazing, The last emperor, KRS one, necro(only if your ****ed up, i mean in the head) Rakim & Eric B. Radio sucks
