So i ran into a problem when installing them today. pretty nooby at this kinda stuff so bare with me on this. i have two sets of horns that i installed, i basically wired everything up like the diagram a couple of posts above me, but just added two more horns, and basically just vampired some together to get the exact diagram like above (im sure this is correct)
So i hooked everything up, and im not getting anything out of the horns, just the stock one, when i unhook the stock one, nothing... within a couple of days i am going to test the grounds that i used, but what else could it be!?

Also on my horns, both prongs are copper colored, how am i supposed to know which is negative and which is positive? i switched each one but still nothing, so this wasnt the problem but might be after

Edit: Found problem, for some reason one stock horn wire didnt work but the other did.

I bought the harness from Subiemods for mine and it worked like a charm. Supertones are always win.

Default How To: Install Supertones

This is probably the wrong thread to post to but I didn't want to start a new thread.
Bought these & was wonder if I can just use the stock wiring in my '15 to install since it has dual horns already.

EDIT:

Looks like I can plug some male pins into the OEM harness.

Hey guys, I have been looking at install instructions on these horns for a while, and then I noticed that the prongs on the back of my horns are both copper colored. Does it matter which is positive? There are no marks on the back to indicate which is which. One has "08" stamped on the bolt holding the prong in, and the other has "13" stamped on it. And the other horn is the same way.

Any help would be much appreciated!

EDIT: So I went ahead and just threw them in, and it worked! So either it doesn't matter which is positive and which is ground, or I got lucky. I went off of the way the bracket was mounted to the horns. I put the positive on the top prong, and the ground on the bottom. So far so good.

So glad I found this! I was browsing for info on an unrelated problem, but I've been wanting to upgrade the horn in my 1997 Impreza since... well... back when I had my 1995 Impreza! These will sound much better than the little FIAMM things I bought but have yet to install.

Good writeup, thanks!

Is it worth buying a relay harness? Does it really make that much of a difference?

It takes all of 10 mins to cut wires to pre-posted lengths. Crimp terminals, and shrink wrap.

A relay costs $3 from an auto store, its a very generic and simple 5 throw relay.

He's using 2 of the Supertones, and made 2 of those wiring looms in the picture.
1 for splitting the single 12v+ into 2 12v+'s to connect the S-tones, and 1 to connect the 2 grounds of the S-tones to a ground point.

What you are making there is 1 big short-circuit.

Use the original wire to trigger a 30 Amp bosch relay, and let that power the S-tones
So take the original Horn-wire, and use that on pole 85.
Ground the relay by connecting pole 86 to a ground

Then use a beefy wire (fused) directly from the battery + terminal to pole 30
Connect pole 87 to the Supertones, and ground the Supertones to the chassis of the car.

That way, when U press the horn-button, the stock wiring only has to handle the small current needed to trigger the relay, while the Power for the supertones actually comes directly from the battery, thru poles 30 and 87

I know this is old but figured I would ask since I keep seeing two different ways.

Why would one wire it the way you mentioned above when I keep seeing the following:

#30 goes to the battery
#85 is the ground
#86 ties into the wiring that was attached to your old horns
#87 goes to the horns,

Going to help a friend out but was wondering since your ground and switch wire are reversed compared to the above?

Thanks,
-Nigel

I just used the Grimmspeed harness last weekend to install my supertones. It is really well made and of high quality. The horns are still plenty loud enough for me and a lot better than stock. I picked it up as I liked the idea of it plugging into the stock harness without modification.

Im not the best at this but it seemed like it should be fairly straight forward.however I'm uncertain of what the 5th and 6th wires on this harness are for. One obviously has to be the trigger wire that attaches to the existing withing but which one and what is the other one for? They have male and female bullet connectors.

For the minimal amount of extra cash, go ahead and get a pre-wired harness. Install took me 20 minutes!

I wasn't aware that this one wasn't plug and play tbh - It's saying to connect the 2 bullet connections to the existing wires but I'm not sure which ones. I've only disconnected the center stock horn at the moment.

One red and one black wire would indicate a live and negative/ground wire but I'm not sure which gets connected to what from the original wiring.

Late answer, but are you asking about pins 85 & 86? If so, they feed the coil in the relay, there is no polarity, so it doesn't matter which pin connects to ground and which connects to the old horn wire.
Since these type horns are also just a coil, there really isn't a polarity for them either if they have 2 wire connections. If only a single wire then the mounting point of the horn is the ground.

This reply is more to answer the question others may have.

Dumb question: For testing purposes ONLY, would the Hella horns work without grounding the horns to earth ground?

(2013 Impreza)
On the relay I have: #85 on the negative side of the battery, #30 to the positive side of the battery, #87 to the horns positive side, and #86 to the old signal wire (blue connector on old horn).

I bought a cheap wiring harness from Amazon but it failed to work completely wired up (with grounds too) so I decided to wire it how I saw it posted on here. So before I finalize my wire placement I decided to test the horn without the ground on the horn and it did not work. To me this should work because earth ground is just protection in this instance.

Its aggravating that Hella has terrible wiring diagrams that seems to be backwards from how everyone else shows it on the internet. Plus they don't have product support. It sucks for people like me who don't know much about wiring.

The "ground" is not protection in this use case, it's the negative of the horn circuit.

Awesome, I got it. So I didn’t end up using the relay: I took my positives to the old horn signal and I took the ground wires back to the negative side of the battery.

I tried using the old horns negative wires but it failed to work. With the oem horn connectors on the new Subaru’s it’s hard to tell what’s going on plus it’s even harder to wire a new horn without cutting the oem connectors. Regardless it’s working now. Thank you.

Second attempt to reply. First time it kept logging me out.

So i was attemepeted to install my superhorns i grabbed a kit off amazon as well as the horns and began to install them along side a video of someone who as well was using a harness. I followed all steps but somewhere something went wrong. I now have horns the have no sounds (fuse clicks), my key remote will not lock or unlock my car, and my radio will not power on. I also tried to just undo it and out the stock ones back on and its made no difference now those dont even have sounds and helpful tips are appropriate thank you. (Oh and the video had my tap into the buzzers sensor not sure what the true name is thats what its labeled on the 04 impreza its connected to the hood latch release but i just disconnected it)

Looking to install hellas on my 2016 sti.
I've been looking at the subiespeed kit since I have some store credit with them. I read using the original wiring, the horns won't be as loud because of the wires, but will using the plug and play have the same issue? Should I go with the plug and play or the wiring harness?

My friend also said he installed it easily without any kit, but he works with electrics, so I don't know how easy it actually is.
