I changed mine last night but went with the Top of the line H11 Sylvania Ultra. They were on sale for $43 a pair plus I has a $5 off coupon. Wow, what a difference. The light is a different color (much brighter white instead of yellow), shines further down the road and wider across the road. I am in the process of looking for H9 in the in the ultras but don't know if the make them. Advanced Auto has a 90 day policy of returning anything if you are not satisfied.

I posted a picture here: http://legacygt.com/forums/album.php...pictureid=5655

The left side it the new bulb and the right side it the stock bulb.

Thank you for sharing this! It was so helpful, now I just need to find out how to get the useless driving lights on this 2011 upgraded. Honestly you can turn on the fogs and not see a difference

has anyone run the h9 bulbs in a snowstorm yet. i know high beams makes visability worse. is this due to the higher wattage or the angle of the beam and/or pattern.

wattage is not a direct correlation to light output so it has nothing to do with the wattage. Low visibility in a snowstorm would be due to the angle because the highbeams reflect off the falling snow and fog, low beams have less reflection, but in severe conditions fog lights alone would be best.

Ageed. Snow the bulbs are fine. Just like the OEM's I wish in heavy snow there was a way to just run fogs.

good to know. also do the higher wattage bulbs burn out more often? my stock bulbs are over three years old now and have never needed changing.

I hope this helps anyone with this mod if they are worried about over heating their wires or housing.
Real-world testing and specifics like this were what I was hoping to find to convince me one way or the other to do the H9 conversion... and, well... I just placed an order for H9's thanks to this thread. Thank you, and I can't wait for the mailman now.

I used a sharp new exacto knife. But u could probably use a filing stone or a dremel. With a sharp knife each bulb took me a couple of minutes.

I just did this mod on my wife's 2011 Forester Premium and not only did the output jump visibly and the color get less yellow, I took a measurement with my handy dandy luxmeter and got these readings. At approximately 1M, the stock H11 bulbs = 15K lux, H9 = 22K lux. That's a significant 47% increase in peak brightness. Don't have to squint to see that. This was using bottom of the ladder Sylvania H9 (made in Germany) bought at the local AutoZone for $15 per.

Trimming the plastic tab was relatively easy. I used an X-Acto knife and a 1/4" chisel. Trimming the metal mounting tab, that was a pain.

I'm very pleased. Now just waiting on the HIR1/9011 for the high beams.

^^ be careful with the HIR1/9011 for the highbeams. I did them on my 2011 WRX and there is a very small bur inside the bulb housing that prevents the HIR1 bulb from fitting correctly (I used the true HIR Toshiba bulbs http://store.candlepower.com/9011.html)

I had to sand down the round portion of the bulb base in order for the bulb to fit.

That being said, holy mother of god the HIR1s are bright, Seriously I've never seen a high beam so bright, I can see EVERYTHING! it was almost too bright because you get glare from the reflections on signs.

Interesting. I ordered Philips HIR bulbs but I imagine they would have the same issue? Would you happen to have a photo or schematic that shows the region that has to be modified?

I have read some scuttle about Philips not being true HIR. I would think it should be pretty apparent from just looking at them. I've been using Osram HIR bulbs in flashlight mods for years and they have this characteristic "gold dust" appearance inside the capsule

I'll tell you, the thing that does give me pause is the comment that this mod is fine for projector but not reflector type installs. Trying to wrap my head around why that might be.

From what I read the Phillips "HIR" are the same spec as the Toshiba HIR bulbs, they just achieve the results differently. Phillips was able to get the same light output as the Toshiba bulbs without using the HIR coating. You can tell they are HIR if there is a thin film coating on the outside of the bulb.

Not sure about the HIR bulbs being ok for projector vs reflector, I'm not sure why that would be the case since most high beam setups are reflector housings anyway.

Just mounted the HIR9011 from MaxLumens tonight and I gotta say, Wow! I was in a rush and so did not take a lux measurement but I will when I get back from my trip. To my eye, the bulbs do not have bonafide Osram HIR coating technology, but as long as the output is above 2,100 lumens, I don't really mind. And they certainly appear to put out.

Just picked up a set of H9s, and getting ready to throw them in. After seeing the before and after in the initial post, I'm psyched.

FYI you can buy a Philips H9 and HIR1 bulb on Amazon for $25 with free shipping. Pretty hard to beat that!

One thing I noticed while putting the Narva H9's from Candlepower in my 2011 WRX was the bigger of the metal tabs on the light was ofset the wrong way and I had to trim it with a pair of snips. The stock H11 was a halfmoon to the left (looking at the bulb) while the Narva was a halfmoon to the right from center. Easy fix but if you're struggling to see why the bulb won't go in, check that.

Also, make sure the little rubber gasket comes out with the H11.

Found alot of 100w h9 bulbs. Would it be ok to do this mod and just buy the upgrade wire kit. Or would the housing and wires get to hot? Thanx

Just a quick note from another Sube owner...just finished the H11 to H9 conversion on my 2009 Impreza 2.5i using Veneer79's easy to follow step by step instructions. What a difference! The low beam lights actually light up the road now and I can see things far enough in advance not to run over/into them at night. No problems with getting flashed so far so I assume all's well from other drivers' perspectives. Happy, happy, happy with the conversion * used el cheapo generic H9 bulbs from Crappy Tire - total cost $18 and 10 minutes of my time.
