Did this mod this past weekend to replace my ricey 6000k HID kit. Go ahead and flame me but boy did I learn my lesson. The output from the H9s is incredible! Can't get over how easy it is to see at night.

I also did the HIRs in the highs and attempted to install Hoën endurance bulbs in the fogs. I say attempted since one bulb broke and left glass shards in my fog housing, FML.

My HiRs only about 10 months until both blew out. No finger oils or anything.

I do have the GTWorx suspension and chassis stiffeners. Generic H9's are holding up though.

Actually I refuse to flame you, because you have:
1. made a change for the better
2. learned something in the process.

*internet slap on the back*

well done.

So what is the reason the H9 is so much brighter than the stock bulbs? I don't get it. Are they higher wattage or something?

BTW, Philips H9 bulbs are on Amazon right now for $7.41 a piece! I'm buying 4!

Funny. I tried a Philips 4300k HID kit and also did not like it. The light looked spotty and not evenly disputed which made hard to see the road surface imperfections or navigate around them. On top of that the light looked blue-sh which made it get absorbed by the dark road surface. On lighter/older pavement it was better but still had hot spots and dark spots. The end result was I couldn't see very well at night. I learned from personal experience that extra ~1000 lumens is nothing without proper focus. I ended up driving with one HID and one H9 bulb for a couple of days and in almost all occasions the H9 bulb performed better at illuminating the road. HID looked brighter when looking straight at it but it also produced a very noticeable amount of glare. I am back on H9s and am much happier with them. If I ever go the HID route again it would have to be a proper retrofit.

Has anyone had any problems with their h9 bulbs? I'm thinking about doing this to my '11 wrx but before I do anything, I want to know that it is safe to do. Thanks in advance!!
Oh and which brands are good? I have been seeing lots of suggestions for sylvania and Philips.

H9 are a 65W and the H11 are 55w. I thing the H11 are 1400 and the H9 are 2100 for output.

I am still running the bulbs that are shown in this DIY. I have had no issues with almost 2 years of running them. I have done long night drives with them on for over 5-6 hours strait. I just got the ones for a local autoparts place.

did anyone find out having their low beams on while turning on the high beams after the mod?

(the factory set up should be no low beam while the high beam is on)

I don't see how having a different bulb would change the way the circuit works.

Does anyone know if halogen and HIR bulbs use the same optics? I know the optics and the focal point on HIDs is different but what about HIRs???

Also, how different is the HIR bulb base compared to H9/H11?

Yes

I also googled that and only found some Korean bulbs. But I am wondering if it's possible to modify the base of the HIR1/2 bulb to fit into H11. Dremel makes these mods possible but I wonder if the connectors would match right up.

I couldn't find any guides or anyone who has tried it so I just may have to order a set and see if its possible.

Search for HIR or read the thread to learn about the HIR bulb. It is a technology that is near HID light emittance without HID ballasts and such.

The High beam lights are also you DLR. is that what you are referring to?

Both my H9 and HIR's only lasted 20k. Not sure if the rumble strips I have to drive over every day have anything to do with that.

Thanks. Good to do some new reading.

Where did you get the HIR from?

The place is in this thread, but I think candlepower in MD has them as well. I am ordering a new set of HiR and upgraded H9's.

I wonder how much longer your HIRs would have lasted if you disabled DRLs.
