All cars have a CANBUS o some sort these days, it's the notion that applying 12v on an output would make this magical CANBUS system turn on another output that is absurd. Don't talk about things you clearly don't know, you'll appear smarter.

Not completely absurd, but thanks for the learning. I guess you didn't care to read (and comprehend) my entire reply, specifically the part where I said "I think..."

But, cool. You're a badass.

Glad you found it helpful, I took some better pictures tonight with the new wheels:

Thanks ! So does the DRL still work on this case ? Or you gonna use the fog as the DRL ?

You use the fog lights as your DRL. If you want both to work, just plug the resistor back in instead of leaving it off.

Okai, I'm a noob at this stuff, but i'm learning! so i want my drl to stay the same, but for my parking lights, i want it with fog lights on to, instead of having my actual lights on, i dont really care about switching it over to drl just to parking, would it be the same layout?

Just did this DIY this evening. Here's how mine turned out. I kept the high beam DRLS btw.

DRLS with fogs:

Parking/halos, DRLS, Fog lights:

Everything together:

On a side note, when high beams are activated while DRL is connected, my fogs blink like a damn x-mas tree. However, when DRL is disconnected, fogs shut off when high beams are active. FYI, fogs are HIDs; yes I know that's strongly not recommended.

Anybody with halogens for fogs and DRL connected get the same flickering in the fogs?

To start with, in OEM configuration the fog lights will turn off when the high beams are on.

In normal operation, the high beams receive partial power when the DRLs are on. Vice versa, if you leave the regular DRLs connected while doing this mod, the fogs will receive partial power through the resistor while the high beams are on, because they've lost their normal 12v source. This partial power is what's causing your HIDs to flicker. My guess is someone with halogens in the fogs and leaving the normal DRLs connected would notice their fogs aren't as bright while the high beams are on.

To fix this, you would have to prevent your fog lights from loosing their regular source of power when the high beams are on. On my other car there is a relay you can cut a terminal off to disable it, I haven't looked into how to leave the fogs on with the high beams for the WRX.

@ REBinc. It looks like my left fog seems to be a little dimmer than the right (may be able to see it in the middle pic). Do you think this DIY had something to do with that? I may have to switch the left and right HIDs bulb to see if it's actually the bulb and not the DIY.

Edit: thanks for explanation, btw

I'd try switching the bulbs and ballasts, I don't see how the DIY would favor left or right.

Would this mod work with an aftermarket fog/driving lights instead of the stock oem fogs?

Thank you X100 for this thread, just did it earlier this week on my 2009 OBS. All of the same steps were followed for the wireing.

However, when I did this mod, I put the car up on ramps and, and worked on it from underneath after pulling the plastic away. This was easier for me for the following reasons:
1) No need to remove air filter box
2) I didn't need to bend over my car and stretch down low to get at the wires (back was hurting after a while of doing this originally, and I'm only 24)
3) Ability to test setup and make modifications quickly (if you install from the top, you must reconnect the air box before starting the car, in order to activate the DRLs, to prevent possible damage from running car without Airfilter).
4) Easier to see vampire clips, making sure these small wires have good contact with the metal portions.

In addition, I replaced the stock 9006's with 9006 LEDs. This was plug & play with no voltage resister needed. So far, there have been no issues with the heat generated.

The intent of the LEDs swap was reduce voltage draw (means better MPG, even though it will be extremely small, as in a fraction of a percent), as well as the long lasting nature of LED's since they will be on probably 75% of the time I drive.

Anyone know what gauge the wire is coming from the resistor and the fog light plug? Thinking of using these www.posi-tap.com

Jesus, why didn't I think to use my ramps?! That would've made this a ton easier rather than taking the entire air box out. I originally had 9006 LEDs, but I didn't like how the hyper white looked behind my yellow fog light protectors... Made the light look bluish green. So I bought 3000k 9006 LEDs, which I don't recommend since they light up amber instead of yellow... Made my fogs look like the turn signals. Now I'm back to hella 55w yellow 9006s from Susquehanna Motorsports... I haven't noticed a decimal of fuel difference, but I've always been about he lower power draw of LEDs.

Honestly I really have the LEDs for visibility and longevity. I know im not going to get any appreciable difference in fuel economy, but with VLEDs sale, the cost difference between regular bulbs and the LEDs was small, and + for LEDs when factoring in only 1 change. Naturally Ive always kept old bulbs to switch out when time comes to sell the car.

Awesome walk through REBinc. Did this mod yesterday along with upgrading highs and fog bulbs.

Lows: Narva H9s
Highs: Phillips HIR1s
Fogs/DRLs: Phillips gen 3 HIR2s

Insane difference all around. Thanks

interesting.

with this mod, what happens with the behaviour of the fog light switch?

i.e. if you set your DRL = fogs, then does the fog light switch become useless?

and what happens to the behaviour of the fog light indicator on the driver's console?

The fog light switch still controls the fog lights when the lows are on, it doesn't matter what position it's in when the lows are off, the fogs will will always be on (unless using the high beams). The indicator follows what ever the switch is set to, not the modified behavior of the fog lights.

One thing I note about this mod is, prior to the mod, I could turn the car off, and all lights would go out automatically (parking lamps and headlamps). I developed a habit of turning the car off with the headlamps on - and that was ok because they went out automatically.

After doing this mod, the parking lights and headlamps are not going out when I shut the car off - and there is a warning beep as I open the door to remind me to turn off my lights.

I will have to get used to this. Is it the same for you guys?

edit: can't reproduce this. not sure why it happened to begin with

If you're bad with electricals, how did you end up having HIDs in your fogs? Throw them away - you're not doing anything except for glaring incoming drivers.
