I started noticing it when I’m blasting my music and the song stops to transition to the next, in between songs there’s silence and I hear that stupid 10khz ringing it’s pretty noticeable. I took it to the dealership and they advised me that there’s nothing wrong with it and they could not replicate the issue. So I had to show them on a frequency analyzer program I have on my laptop “I’m an audio engineer full time ” where sure enough the car was peaking at 10khz. The technicians were surprised they weren’t able to hear it until I turned it off then and back on. Anyways, their conclusion was that all the Subaru WRX’s have this issue. I’m calling bull lol. Has anyone had this problem?

I’m having the same problem on my front passenger speaker. I now have changed the speakers but it is not making a different noise. I am going to check the wiring today. Just to ensure it isn’t a hiccup on my side.

Guy on clubwrx has changed the headunit and front dash speakers with no change in noise. I changed my battery to a better one than the Panasonic and the noise subsided slightly but it’s still there. Noise is not there when engine is off so it’s getting interference somewhere with engine on.

Dealer has acknowledged that the noise is there and not normal. I have yet to have it troubleshot by their electrical tech. Will do it in the future.

As far as I know the controls changed in 2018. 2018 and 2019 have the same button layout. They changed the position of the volume and previous/next track buttons. They used to be both vertical and now they are a cross like a game console controller.

The volume/skip buttons on the 2016-2019 have the same game control layout -- 2015 had the vertical setup. The big difference is that he 2016-2018 have a menu and back button above the game pad, which apparently is not in the 2019.

I want the menu & back button back in the 2019.

I got used to the vertical switches on our outback limited (2012) but the game pad on the WRX is intuitive enough. Up & down for volume, and left for previous track, right for next track. I have audible set up to reverse or skip 30 sec in previous/next track inputs (its now the default for audible), and for the radio, short press switches presets while long press seeks.

It works well. But a menu and back button would be welcome.

If I upgrade the HU and get the maestro mrr2, I'll figure something like that out wheb I program the dual function swc inputs.

Funny because I'd give up the back and menu buttons for the 2019 head unit lol. I'm not wild about the game pad since i've skipped tracks/stations when I meant to change volume.

That happens to me sometimes in my 2018. They could’ve made the directional buttons individual buttons so that doesn’t happen if you press it diagonally.

But anyway. Does that mean that the 2019’s steering wheel control harness has a different contector all together? Shouldn’t be too hard to find the 2019’s left side buttons and harness if that’s the case.

You mean on the base HU? Besides CarPlay disconnecting randomly, my HK stereo has no issue. I restricted CarPlay from launching on my iPhone so the HU works fine for me while connected. For navigation, I just use the car's NAV. It's actually pretty nice.

I've been checking for firmware updates from time to time, but my HU still says its on the latest software.

Yeah, I'm a fan of the vertical toggles of the older steering wheels... impossible to toggle the wrong one.

I have no clue if the steering wheel harness is different. It could be the same, but with a different signal? No one has done a retrofit to find out yet. Judging by the pic above, at least all the connectors going into the 2019 head unit are the same as previous years with the exception of the 3 USB-looking slots. Previous years only have one. I still haven't seen the back of nav+hk unit though, which is what I'm interested in.

Oh I absolutely don't want the old HU. I just want the 2017 SWC.

Lol. Yeah no one does... I'm jealous of your headunit. I love it in my Impreza and honestly, the sound is almost as good as my STI's HK system despite being the base unit.

Agreed. I think the crappy audio most folks complain about is the BT, not the speakers, as Pandora sounds so much better through AA than through the Subaru HU app.

If you ever get around to switching it out, let us know if those 3 identical black slots are in fact, all used. As it stands now, it looks like a retrofit would most likely work for us previous years in terms of audio, but might have steering wheel control issues. I'm assuming the nav+hk unit I'd need just adds a gps antenna input.

I took these pictures today at the dealership. This is from a 2019 WRX STI Limited USDM HK + Nav. I tried searching through the menus to find the specific part number of the HU but the software versions was the best I could find. There was no hardware info anywhere.

Thats ok thanks anyway. The parts site lists both 86471VA610 and 86471VA710 part numbers for the wrx while the latter only shows under the STI. My guess is they're interchangeable except 86471VA610 is for wrx designation... who knows though.

The specific 2.1 amp USB label is different, but I think the amp difference is just to make sure the phone doesn't drain battery when running multiple apps at the same time when using CP/AA. I've read that happening to some people while streaming and using phone maps at the same time on a 1 amp USB port.

This is the firmware version I have on my HK and CarPlay does not work properly. Randomly disconnects.

When I was testing out Carplay on this radio I noticed that my music was skipping every once in a while. This was playing local music on my phone, not streaming. That's pretty bad considering is a newer head unit than in my 2018.

I think it could wait a year. I mostly listen to audio books on audible when driving, and through AA and stock speakers I have zero sound quality complaints.

For music, it definitely is muddy but not distorted.

But I really would like performance gauges and reading/clearing codes from the HU via idatalink, and if I want to drop an additional $1.1k, could integrate stealth radar/laser detection on Kenwood & JVC idl units.

I'm debating between a free air sub mounted to the rear deck, or an under the seat sub. I've already settled on the sub Amp. Which one depends on which sub I end up selecting.

For the speaker Amp, I definitely settled on the kicker key.

Yeah, mine does not skip music most of the time while on CarPlay, but just disconnects randomly. If I don't use CarPlay it works fine..and the audio is quite good. I learned to live with it for now while hoping Subaru releases a firmware update soon.

Sounds like it could just be a CP thing in the HU and not affect AA.

The issue with AA is if you do something like restart your phone in the middle of a drive, AA may not want to reconnect without you restarting the car (only way of canceling figure out to hard restart the HU) at least once.

Does anybody have the 2019 WRX/WRX STI Service Manual? It would help determining how is the HU wired up.
