Thanks to all for the great information on the pitfalls of installing HID lamps as a retrofit. There is a great deal of hype on the web regarding bulb temp, light output, and color. If only my son would listen....

Do you not realize that oncoming cars whose drivers can't see anything because of your lights also pose a safety hazard to you, not only everyone else around you? Or does that not bother you either?

Only if you enjoy terrible beam pattern, reduced light output, and blinding people (which you seem to).

IMHO, you chose the wrong thread to post your comments in, sidewayz.

It's probably already mentioned in this thread someplace, but anyway-
ALL OEM HIDs are 4100K, this of course includes the STi. Changing the OEM D2R bulbs for aftermarket ones with a higher temp rating will reduce the amount of usable light output while increasing glare and is counterproductive.

What base type do the EDM STi lights (2002) use? I am having a hard time finding this information.

EDM STi lights are H1 low beams. Not hard to find at all, if you have them just look at the bulb. Also widely posted here and elsewhere.

If you buy OEM STI HID assemblies, you will still have high-/low-beam, except your lows will now be OEM reflector-based D2R HID. Anything aftermarket you do will not affect your high-beams unless you touch them; most of the modification we talk about here for MY04 is for the low-beams, as these are separate from the high-beams in the newer models. You will have to search for prices, but it's not cheap. Generally in excess of 1000 USD all together, AFAIK.

Unhappy

I am reading this thread and wondering? What is the easiest way to hook up 04 JDM HIDs. I bought them thinking they would be pretty cool. I can't figure out what the easiest way is to wire them in. Maybe I could find out what kinda plugs I need, try and find them and then splice them into my wiring harness. To top it all all off, I am doing this to an 02 WRX. Has anyone done this or know of a site that has pictures and descriptions that can walk me through the process??? I don't want to ruin a $900 pair of JDM HIDs. Any help would be much appreciated.

You could replace them with something that won't spray HID into oncoming traffic

I have an issue with this FAQ. One of your last pieces of advice is to install relays. This doesn't make any sense. All Subaru headlights are already actuated by relays.

Yes, but-
The factory setup has relays for the common headlight power on each side. The ground side is switched, w/o relays. HID's, due to their high startup current, can't be plugged directly into the OEM wiring. While it is possible to use the existing power circuit/relays with direct (chassis or battery) grounding for the HID ballasts, another option is to use battery power through external relays switched by the headlight circuit. Either way works if done properly.

So, will there be an any gain adding neg side relays with stock lights?

Has anyone measured voltage drop on a WRX with stock wiring / lights?

Not really HID related, but the answer is yes. I've measured the ground-side drop at around 1.5V or so which is enough to affect brightness. However with the stock lights it may not make that much difference given the limitations of the 9007 bulb design. You can certainly go ahead and try it.

What brand bulbs are in the USDM STi? Just wondering if swapping to another brand of OEM D2R bulbs will change the color output. I've heard the Osram is a bit diff then Phillips and so on.
Also what would happen if you put OEM D2S bulbs in reflector housings? I think they would put out more light but would there be a bad glare? I have some spare bulbs so I was thinking I might try them and see what happens.

I don't know what brand bulbs are used but it's probably either Osram or Philips. It shouldn't matter, all OEM HIDs are 4100-4300K. Using alternate bulbs with a higher color temperature will only reduce the usable light output and won't improve performance.
Don't use D2S bulbs, as you are already aware they will produce more glare. The D2R bulbs have an anti-glare mask printed on the bulb, the D2S bulbs do not.

There are no more aftermarket HID dealers in the US as it is illegal to install them.

Well, there might be some, but none from major MFG.'s, as there's no money in it.
