For anyone with this problem I would go this route. For DIY use LOTS of PB blaster.

Default Painted Control Arm Failure?

So as I sit here at the mechanic's waiting for a new stock subframe to be installed on my '04 wrx wagon w/256k on it (original clutch I might add) after it rotted through on the right side, I wanted to know if anyone has had experience with the recalled, but only painted control arms failing? They insisted when I brought it in that they were in good shape, the paint would suffice, but reading this thread, I see that when this fails you can pretty much expect a total loss insurance-wise.

The car is for sale too btw, no ads yet, but its a daily commuter for the last 10 years full service history, lots of other new parts too - $2850

The anti-rust spray the dealers use doesn't last very long.

POR is really the only anti rust coating that works. Your better off not wasting your time with the dealers "solution".

I recently went through this issue when dealing when fulfilling my lower control arm recall. My subframe had a fist size hole through it on the passenger side and flaking on the driver. I continued to call the dealer and try to play off the liability/endangering other people card and it worked. Subaru of Canada came through with a new subframe and control arms and ball joints. i did however pay for the half hour of labour but then someone from service backed into my car so they ate that cost, gave me a new door, fender and met my requests for a tank of gas. three weeks later my car is back and full of freshly painted black parts.

I tried to do something similar with a local dealer regarding my subframe rot. Dealer basically they wouldn't go through SOA with an inspection because of my service history with them? Seems pretty relevant considering it's a recall/safety issue. Luckily I found one in decent shape for cheap and had it coated.

Hey everyone, do you know if this JDM part would fit a US 02 OBS?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/111552176289...MakeTrack=true

The subframe looks similar, but I wondered if anybody knew of the compatibility. Or if anybody has a US subframe available (rust-free) and would either ship it to Ohio or lives in the mid-west, let me know. I missed out on the couple that were listed here earlier in the year. Thanks!

not sure. I ended up replacing the subframe with this. and then a week later the dealer replaced both control arms due to rust even after they were painted 3 years ago.

I'm just hoping to keep her until she reaches 200k.

Did you do the installation yourself for the GTSpec Subframe? I'm trying to decide if I can do this myself. Our local Kwik Kar told me they were going to have to suspend the engine and do all kinds of work to replace it but everything I've read on here says it's a bolt on that can be easily swapped. My subframe is rusted all the way through on the front right side and I'm debating the GTSpec or Oswald to replace it.

I messaged the seller for the jdm sub frame and it is compatible with usdm. I've also found some hidden on ebay labeled as front crossmembers or k-frames if anybody else is looking there.

I'll still probably spend a few hundred for the sub frame which is more than getting it from somebody on here I'd imagine, but still way cheaper than the 1400 my shop wanted for the repair. At least the shop would consider the job though. The dealership said they wouldn't even do that repair.

I'm worried about getting those rusty bolts out though. Hopefully pb and heat does the trick, but I'm dreading a broken bolt.

A couple years ago, I threw away about six mint front and cross members because no one wanted them. Guess I should have kept them around...

bang*bang*, I haven't done it yet. I've been looking around to see if there is a lower cost alternative.
I can't do anything until the snow melts around here and my inspection isn't up until July.

I would love to do it myself, but after the hell I went through to get the front subframe off last summer I am seriously considering having someone do it.

WOW...

Subaru dealers are charging ridiculous amount of money to replace the subframe.

It can be done under 45 min. with basic hand tools. Many people just remove them for weight saving.
