Default tallest tire for an 06 STi

Been searching and finding lot's of info on tire width maximums.

I'm looking to see what is the tallest tire I can fit on my 06 STi. Stock rims and stock suspension. I drive dirt, daily in rocky conditions and want more rubber between the wheel and the road. Likely to buy a snow type tire.
thanks

if you don't wanna buy new wheels, 245/45/17 is the tallest i would go on the stock 17x8s.

uncle scotty- I do want different wheels but cant get them now.

nhat- why not?

It's not just offroad ability it's also a case of protecting the flimsy stock rims from the rocks in our roads. I live on a dirt road with lots of rocks. Not gravel but lumpy rocks all over. I daily drive my sti on dirt road and over a twisty paved mountain pass daily.

Prefer not to downsize rim do to the loss in brake size. Smaller rims work well on the dirt but the smaller brakes were not as gratifying once we hit the paved.

thanks for all responses

what're you talking about? the 05-07 sti came with 17x8s stock. if you want a taller tire to absorb more of the rocks/bumps/shock/etc, go with a 245/45/17. any taller and you'll rub everywhere, unless you wanna spend money to raise your car some more.

what am I talking about? please keep in mind that my response is to you, uncle scotty and anyone else reading this. Not just to you. "why not?" was the only part directed just towards you.
As you know there are many similar sizes for instance 225/50/17 It's approximately .1" narrower and .2" taller than the 245/45 you suggest. Pretty close. Just showing there may be other options.
And looking for any others

i was confusing by the why not.

225/50/17 is marginally taller but you could possibly run into rubbing at full lock, on the lower strut perch, or on the fender liner due to the height...or all 3 due to the high offset of the stock bbs wheels.

if your on dirt alot, I would swap out to some wrx springs, raise your ride height alittle then combine that with a taller tire and you could gain another .5" or more in height, and add a good skid plate/diff protector.

The stock wheels are anything but flimsy.

This is the size I would take in the situation you are describing.

Tire height will protect the wheel from fixed vertical hits like in a pot hole or head on curb.

Don't dismiss width as it will add protection to the wheel edges from large but loose obstacles such as rocks. Width has protected my wheels more often than height.

I have driven this size on rocky roads with extreme summer tires, it will protect your wheels both with tire height and tire width, deflecting larger rocks from the wheel sides with its width as well as offering more height.

Get this size in a mud and snow and it will meet your needs better than any other size.

this is an all too often posted fantasy

tire PRESSURE is FAR-FAR more important on the street
lots and LOTS of total idiots run 30psi and bend wheels.....when 35psi(or 40psi) woulda made it a non-issue

off road is a totally different ballgame and you can not mix one with the other

which is why this whole idea is just chock full 'o fail

Yes, proper pressue is critical to wheel protection, but it does not negate the role tire height plays. I have had hits on roads that tore the interior of the sidewall leaving a bulge on the side of the tire and not damaged the wheels because of tire height and proper pressure.

The discussion was about tire sizes - pointing out the importance of tire pressure was helpful; the rest was the vanity of a narcissist. But saying it is fantasy and fail makes your argument unassailable and you clearly the much more informed person.

Well apparently what the issue really is, isn't the topic of these forums.

I agreed that tire pressure is critical and you have a hissy fit.

But then again you are agreeing with me - because like it or not you are using tire height to protect your wheels 235/40 are anything but low profile. So tire height and tire pressure are protecting your wheels.
