Since we have had a freeze lately, I noticed a fuel smell upon cold starts. I fear the hoses may have cracked or the clamps came loose. intake mani will have to be pulled for a full fuel line in$pection..

really enjoying your thread, what a fun build. Looks like you've had some good luck sourcing out parts for a steal, too!
That fuel smell is pretty common, my husband's 05 had those lines replaced and sometimes he still gets the smell in cold weather. I've been lucky so far with my 04, but the forester we wrx swapped smells sometimes too. Luck of the draw, it seems. Good luck fixing it, and a word of advice, turn the clamps so you can get to them and make them tighter when the manifold is back on, lol.
Keep up the good work

Thank you! I am hoping they just all need to be tightened. Good bit on the clamps!

I thought of a first aid kit but not a fire extinguisher.

Fun thread to read. Just an FYI, in post #69 (giggidy) you showed a pic of your MAF that you cleaned. Just pointing out that the sensor on the exterior that looks like a little teardrop is in fact the intake air temp sensor. The MAF itself is inside the plastic at the bottom and looks like a little metal square.

The more you know. Everywhere I read, even threads on here said that was the proper thing to do. It was def dirty.

Never a bad idea to clean anything dirty. And a slight correction to my post, the MAF sensor itself is actually two wires crossing the inner plastic tube. Simply use the MAF cleaner spray nozzle hose to shoot fluid down in there, if you have compressed air hit it a couple times to dry it out, and you are good to go.

UPDATE 1/3/17

Hope everyone is having a happy new year! Car had the intake manifold pulled, and all the clamps for the fuel lines tightened up, along with some fresh gaskets and coolant. Managed to bear the cold weather to install my NASIOC license plate frame! thats the extent of mods these days. (Been in the negatives almost every day here.)

But nevertheless! I have ordered some goodies ***9786; they are on their way. Lets just say it will be adding to the face lift a little bit.

Another day in the life... This past thurs-fri we new Englanders got hit hard by a "snow cyclone. " so apparently that doesn't make the city want to plow my road.

So I'm coming home Thursday night from work around 5pm. I pull onto my road, straight trudging thru, realize that between the parking ban and my parking lot not being plowed, I looped around and this is where I should've just kept driving...drove down my road again, and attempted to get into my back lot, after a little while of back and forth I was able to get it good enough in the lot. (Which had already accumulated several inches. My car was smoking, and I noticed coolant all over my front bumper. My first thought was the car worked so hard to get in, that it overflowed the reservoir.

That wasn't the case. So, I let it cool down, went inside. Came out later to check on it, turned it on, and thought we were in the clear. (As Im prematurely celebrating, I somehow manage to lock the door, with the keys in it, running..)Starts to overheat again as I'm breaking into the window with a close hanger. luckily it did not take me long to get in, and turn it off before it started to smoke. so I'm thinking a hose blew off or something. After some searching I found the underside of my upper radiator hose had a nice big rip in it.

I ordered a new one online, picked it up the next day, put it on, refilled the tank, burped the system. Still over heating, plus now I'm stuck. What I didn't realize was that I was so stuck, on top of inches of snow and ice. (I had dug myself a pretty nice hole.) Taking the phrase 'framed out' a little too seriously.

Long story short, I got the car out and it is still over heating. I cleaned all the snow I could from the radiator . I don't seem to be losing any coolant? I thought maybe once we got it unstuck, it would stop over heating. My splash guard underneath is ruined. I noticed the rad fans only work when they want too. We are supposed to be having some warmer weather this week, so hopefully I can get down to the bottom of this.

It's always nice to come home to parts from japan.

Went back and forth about whether or not I wanted covers. I use my fog lights often, and really like the big fog look, so I found the bezels for a pretty good deal.( $179 shipped.) While I was looking at Jdm fenders, I saw the splitters for $70 so I grabbed those as well. No painting, that's my favorite part!

Today, I went to grab more coolant, and a failsafe thermostat. I wanted to be absolutely sure it wasn't just air in the tank, so I burped the system again, while filling from the top. No bubbles. Took the car for a short drive, still over heats. My heat is ice cold, both at idle and running, so I'm going to try replacing the thermostat. (It wouldn't surprise me if it went, esp if it's the og thermostat.)
I notice no significant leaks while it running, radiator fans seem to be coming on.

Car is good and ready to come back home.

Also, I'm looking for opinions on this. My original idea was to put these stickers on fog light covers, but since I'm going to do the big fog conversion..which one looks better? Stickers are see thru front to back.

We're not gone! Just busy! Bought my first house, and it has been non-stop moving, unpacking, etc. BUT. The most important thing is I now have a REAL work space. No more working in the street.

With that being said, big plans this year for the wrx! I'm hoping to get more done now.

In the meantime, fixed my rust temporarily. (Just in time for a sticker.)

Still checking around for the JDM fog lights. I knew I should've grabbed them when I saw them cheap on eBay.

Got something else on the way. Stay tuned.

Must say I'm really liking the car. If my daily blobeye RS wasn't an auto and didn't have a dent in the front fender I'd love to start making it my own like you have yours. I'll definitely keep watching this thread

One of the last storms we had, I was driving home from work on the highway, and the car started to slip. Like a slight slip, every now and again, then every few seconds. I thought it was just the conditions of the road, then I saw my 'at oil temp light' come on. I pulled over, cleared all the slush off the front if the car, checked everything under the hood. Turned the car back on, no light. So I'm driving and it starts to do it again, I pulled over at the closest auto store and bought 2 quarts of Mobil 1 75w90 gear oil. I figured since the transmission oil and front diff oil have probably never been changed (211k). I decided to take that on.

I also bought 3 quarts of Mobil 1 syn ATF as well. While the wrx 4eat can hold almost 10 quarts, all of it doesn't come out of the transmission. A lot of it is in the diff. You're also probably not going to get it all out in 1 shot.

What I used for this:

10 in breaker bar
T70 torx (5.99 AutoZone)
17 inch socket
10 inch socket
12 inch socket
Flathead screwdriver
Oil drain pan (a big one)
Jack and Jack stands

I read up a lot before actually doing this, I also have the Haynes manual, which I referenced a few times.

In my 2004 wrx, I have the diff dipstick of the left of the intercooler and the tranny dipstick on the right. Now, I'm telling you right now. There was no way I was getting the tranny dipstick out, without removing the intercooler. Some say they did it, but this way was much easier to put the fluid back in too. So I removed the intercooler, just 4 12s, 3 clamps and pop the hoses off. The y-pipe can be a bitch to get out but if you finagle it enough. (Paired with a lot of cursing)

This gives you full access to both dipsticks easily.

I took both out to relieve some pressure.

Jack up and car and you're looking for the big black pan with a 17mm and the front diff t70 torx is before that. Actually says 'diff oil' under it. Pop those bad boys open and let it flow.

I got a little under 5 liters. (

I got a little about 5 quarts from both the front diff, and transmission. It's important to measure how much comes out of the transmisison because you will replace exactly what comes out. I got about 3 quarts out of the tranny.

Be sure not to lose the plugs!

Now, the manual has specific instructions for filling up both, so here's how I did mine.

Refilled the tranny with 3 quarts of ATF, lowered the car, refilled the diff, checking with the dipstick, but give it time to drain into the pan. Started the car up, and went from P all the down to 1 and back up again, ending with the e brake.

This is supposed to be done every 30k, but majority of people only care about oil changes. Mine was a brownish-muddy red, so you know it was time.
I think it's important to take on tasks like this yourself, because you become familiar with where everything is on your car.

Thought my alternator went on me the other day. I was driving to work, and first my radio stopped working, then my cluster went all wacky, and lights came on the dash. I heard this odd sound and I went to pull over, just hitting the brake or turning on my lights made the car jerk.

Bought a used alternator, and had the old one tested. It passed with flying colors the guy said, so I picked up a new battery just to try that.

Quick update:

I got the car to stop dying out on me. Still have this weird noise when on it, around 30-40. Kinda sounds like letting the air out of a a balloon? Think it may be the ol tiny turbo going on me..

So, until that gets resolved, perfect time to install the shop full of parts I've acquired over the winter.

04 sti bumper splitters on & subframe removed for the whiteline sway bar to go in. Only managed to snap a few of the subframe bolts, and sawzall 2 others. 2018-03-09_10.05.01.jpgIMG_20180308_184434_374.jpgIMG_20180308_184434_373.jpg
