Default Looking for some advice on all season tires

So I know dedicated snow tires are better than even the best all season tires, but for a variety of reasons (financial, space, time) I can't go with a set of dedicated winter tires/rims. However, I've decided I'm probably going to replace my stock RE92s this season instead of next.
Basically I'm looking for a good all season tire in the stock size that gets good traction (especially in rain and snow since the Potenzas were awful in that department), has decent tread life, and a decent ride. I'd also like to not spend too too much, though I do realize this will be expensive. Tire Rack reccomended a few but I'm curious if anyone here has any advice. Please keep the "but snow tires are t3h better" to a minimum
Edit-Just found a thread about bang for your buck tires. I'll look into some of those that are mentioned.

Falken 512's. Yes, I put up a bad review of them, but no one else has the same complaint. I believe it may be a wheel bearing going.

Regardless, they are UHP all seasons, and very reasonable:

Hmm interesting. The only thing I'm a bit unsure of is where I could go to get them mounted to my rims, balanced, aligned etc. I should take a trip over to some local tire places to compare prices. I usually jump at the idea of buying online but for tires I'm not sure.

I just bought 4 yesterday on www.tires.com . Free shipping, no tax, and they came today.

If you look at the top, there's a link to their installers. The closest one to me is 13 miles away. They charge $10 to mount and balance (lifetime balancing).

I got Toyo Proxes 4 last winter and couldn't be happier. Their only competitor is Pzero Nero, but they're not necceserialy better and more pricey.

Alot of our customers like the Falken Ziex 512 and the Toyo Proxes 4 tires. The Ziex 512 I would recommend for a more aggressive M+S tire as it seems to do better in the snow. I would recommend the Proxes 4 for someone who drives the majority of the time in the dry and occasional snow. The reason is because the Proxes 4 does better in the dry than the Ziex 512 in my expierence with these two. Both are awesome tires especially for the price and tread ware ratings.

Check out the Bridgestone G009. Great bang for the buck.

Another tire you should consider in Nokian's WR ...

http://www.nokiantires.com/newsite/tires_popup.cfm?id=6

I have a set of the older NRW's and they are a very good all season tire ... very good in rain and snow as well ..

can be hard to find ... but look on ebay motors for best prices that I've seen ..

Thanks for the reccomendations everyone! I'm going to look into the Toyos, Falkens, and the Potenza G009s. Depending on what my local shop has I'll probably go with one of those 3. The toyos and the Falkens seem to be a pretty good value since they're about 65-80 per tire.
I think I'm going to try and get the Falkens. Supposedely they sell them at Sears Auto Center and they'll pricematch and internet price (plus shipping) so I can get them for a decent price. I could go get them today but I want to stay the hell away from shopping areas

I'd have to go with cfwdfw on this one. Nokians would be my only choice for all season tires.

Hey Calcvictim,
How are the Toyo's in the snow? I was really leaning toward the Falkens but I think the only two places around me that stock Falken tires are Sears (and I've read lots of horror stories about Sears Auto Centers) and this local place which I'm not to sure about. Town Fair Tire has the Toyos and I've always been happy with Town Fair so I'll probably wind up getting my tires from there.

Well Town Fair Tire was able to special order the Falkens for me. I should have them in a few days. I can't wait to see how my car handles with some decent tires!

Just had a set of the 512s mounted on my sister's Civic last Saturday at our local Sears Auto Center. So far so good, and they were fairly quick in doing it.

I've had them on my TS for the last 30k miles and really can't complain about them. They're very good all around performers and do well on unplowed streets and slushy plowed roads as well. You'll tell when its time to replace them when the wet performance gets very sketchy in the twisty stuff. A solid performer, I liked them and the only other all season tires I'd recommend would be the Continental ContiExtremes or possibly the G009. I've had some wear issues with the Contis even after messing about with the alignment, and the G009 looks promising. I broke down and spent the money on Blizzak LM25s this year, so we'll see if they really do make a difference. I've never had dedicated winter tires, so we'll see what happens.

Best of luck with your choice.

I'm really looking forward to getting the Falkens (I hope they come in quicker than 5 business days!). My car is ok in the snow on the Potenzas but I'm really really curious to see how it is with the Falkens. Ditto for wet performance. I had a couple of scary moments in the rain with the Potenzas so it'll be interesting to see how much better the Falkens handle.

Nokian WR's. Best there is. And bonus points for getting the Snowflake symbol for winter service (only AS to get it I believe)

Yep ... Nokian WR's are the only all-season that I know of that gets the severe winter Snowflake rating

Just wanted to say that I got the Falkens mounted on Thursday night right before the big snow storm (I would have done it earlier but they didn't arrive until Thursday morning). I got to see how they were in the dry very quickly and they seemed good, a bit less harsh than the RE92s. The real fun was seeing how they were in the snow. They felt really good, better than the RE92s when new for sure. Seemed much more controllable and predictable. The rim protector is nice too especially since I already have slight curbage on one rim and would like to prevent that from happening in the future. So I'm a happy camper for now. I've got up to 30 days to exchange them but I think they'll suit my needs just fine.
thanks again for the great recccomendation!

Just to add, I love the Faken 512's. I put them on in October and you can't beat the price for these tires. In the dry they do have their limits, but they are pretty far for an all-season tire. In the snow, it is not as easy to get them squirly as I would have thought. They are plenty stable and feel very confident, even when sliding on purpose.

And another note, they are VERY quiet. The sidewalls are strong with enough pressure (38 front 35 rear). I don't think I've made them chirp yet.

My car is stock, and the front open diff sucks.

I too was enamored with the Falken 512s a couple winters ago. I bought them right after Consumer Reports rated them #1 for all-season snow traction. I loved them right away, but I have to say, by the next winter, when they had 10-15K miles on them, they were getting to be quite average on snow and ice.

Now, with 30K on them, I do not look forward to driving in the snow. They slip. A lot. All the guys at the tire place tell me they ended up getting a lot of bad feedback about the snow performance of the Falkens (this is in Minnesota). I'd say they are a great tire when new, and super cheap when I got them, but if you're going into a winter with more than 20K miles on them you may need to change out those tires early.
