Default What do you tip and what do you think about it?

Inspired from my other thread.....

How much do you tip the waitress? People are saying %25?!? I tip that high for friends (people that have waited on me multiple times in the past and are cool as hell), but for EACH trip to a restaurant, 25% is way too high.

I mean, sure their job is hard, but so is mine. I don't see them working 8 - 6, then going home, getting called at 2am and going back in to work until 4pm the next day. I worked 14 consecutive 20 hr days earlier this year. I didn't get a bonus or a tip.

When I used to work at Burger King, I was working the drive-thru and busting out orders in only minutes, which included drinks and food for families of five or more, all while taking additional orders and being their cashier. I never got a damn tip.

I understand that being a waitress is a rough job, but 25% is excessive. I mean, if I had a $100 bill, I should give the waitress $25 on TOP of the $100 I spent?!? What if $45 of that bill was a bottle of wine? She uncorked it, poured a glass and did other work, but I should tip her 25% of that bottle?

Mr. Pink is right. While serving is a hard job, it's their job and they're already paid hourly to do it. I'm sure all of our jobs put us through some difficult stuff and we don't get **** for it. Why should we tip SO high for someone to do their job well?

Yeah but if you have to say that then you remember your money long after you've spent it.

They're paid about $2.25 an hour to do that job. They rely on tips.

20% is a standard tip. 25% maybe for a fancy place, or for exceptional service.

I tip 15% automatically if the server never comes back to ask how I'm doing.

tip? you wanna tip? ok, here's a tip: should the service suck, you don't get no buck. later, BITCH!!!

usually, though, it's about 15%. more if the service was great, less if the service sucked.

My wife and I dine out quite a bit. We're always willing to try a new place but msot nights we pick from about 7 or 8 places we both know and like a lot. We kinda get to know the people after a while and receive great service. So... I tip well.

Also the wife likes sushi... which is OK for me but enough already with the sushi... Once in a while I indulge her taste for sushi and on those occasions I tip better than normal becuase I understand that that's the custom with sushi... you're not just tipping the server, but also the suchi chef. Nothing against sushi.. .it's just that I've had enough of it that if I never had it again I wouldn't feel like I was missing anything. But... I digress...

I go 15-20%, unless service is exceptional (bad or good) with a minimum tip of $1.

Next: how accurately do you figure the percentage? Nearest $.25? Dime? Nickel?

I once knew a guy who would calculate the tip to the penny, getting change from the restaurant or others at the table. IMHO, if you're waiting a table and somebody requests you bring change for a dollar, offer a complimentary cup of coffee or something and SPIT IN IT!

So in CA, don't feel bad about tipping 15%.

When I tip, I tip $1 for every $5 on the bill. That's 20%.

So if it's $60, I tip $12..

I just round out - I don't worry about the exact percent.

15% is supposed to be the guide for "good" service. 5%-10% is for crap to almost good. 20% is an above average tip. I generally tip between 20-25% when the service is really good. If its ok its 15%-20%. I always leave a tip even on bad service since I pity waitresses given that they have to put up with people. People suck. They have to deal with moron parents and their monkey kids...

Also I figure it roughly but always round up to the nearest dollar so they always get the benefit of that...

do u kno what the EASIEST way of figuring out tip is????

if the waiter wuz good... pay TRIPLE the tax
if the waiter wuz ok.... pay double the tax and round up as necessary...
if the waiter sukd... pay double but round down...
if the waiter, food, and everything outright suckd, leave a bloody knife wrapped in a bloody napkin

Gratuity is earned. I tip according to the service I get. I don’t care how much someone gets paid an hour. They knew how much work it is and how much pay it was when they took the job. I’m not going to give my hard earned money to someone that gives me bad service just because its hard work.

Gratuity = something given over and above what is due, generally in return for or expectation of good service.

what's this % crap everyone talks about? I'm down for tipping if they are a great server...other wise forget it. I don't feel automatically responsible to tip jsut because they fill the job position. That's dumb.

As far as percentages go, what's the point of that. Regardless of the price of your total meal, they are working the same amount of time right? Usually if it's a large bill, there's a larger party: meaning that they probably have a couple people helping out... OR that the food is over priced.

On that note: For example when my wife and I dine out, the waitress/waiter at establishment #1 is carrying out the same two plates, and two cups of beverage for 20$ total bill, that the server at establishment #2 is for my wife and I... but the total bill is 50$.

Let's assume the meal is a relatively similar amount of food/beverage... why do I need to tip the server more at establishment #2 just because my bill was more? Assuming the service was of similar caliber, shouldn't both servers at the two seperate establishments be getting similar tips for similar work regardless of how much I have to shill out for the food???

I used to work for tips in highschool... I also got hourly. I knew that tips were jsut that...tips. It was a gesture... not a guarantee. I already had my guarantee in the paycheck.

hope my ramble makes sense... that being all said my typical tip rarely exceeds 5$ with an average of 2-3$. I piss plenty of people off with my theories, and I'm never consistant. My wife gets angry when I seemingly undertip some fools, while over tipping others. Then again we try to eat cheap. I'm always the one freaking out at 15$= for one meal. But I'd not bat an eye for an NSX or F355 if I had the cash... go figure.

I have waited tables at a couple places and have been bartending for a couple years now. I tip anywhere from 15% to as much as 50% depending on the service and what not. Working in that industry will open your eyes to how bad of a job that really is at most places. The average wage around here for service is about 2.50 and hour and that just normally covers taxes.
15% is for horrible service
20% average service
20%+ is for really exceptional service.

I think everybody should wait tables at some point just to see what its like.

I wait tables ont he weekends. So I have a good view of this.

First.. I make $2.50 an hour. Keep in mind that I am taxed on 12% of my sales. So... when I do get a pycheck, it's usually like $20 - $50 for 2 weeks, or about 40 hours. After taxes I average about $.50 an hour.

Now.. put your office job into a wait shift job. What if at the end of the day your boss tells you:

"I didn't think you were very friendly today, and my TPS report was 10 minutes late. I don't care that your dog died or how sick your family is, so here's $75 instead of the usual $100".

As a waiter, you have to turn EVERYTHING off when you hit the floor. You CANNOT afford to have a bad day. You cannot afford to have a bad 5 minutes. Lose 5 minutes now and your behind the 8 ball for the rest of the night.

You don't want to tip on a $30 bottle of wine? What about the 5 glasses of water (No charge) the waiter brought you that don't appear on your bill so you have something to sip at?

My resturant is looking into going with bottle water for $1.50 each. That way the customers are less likely to waste our time for something free. Coffee, water, etc. Things that wind up killing all of the waiters time, but don't appear on the bill. I have people come in Sunday morning and order a water, a cup of coffee, and a bloody mary all in one breath, not drink the water, sip at the coffee, and drink the bloody mary. I hate those people. Oh.. and hot tea too.

I could go on for hours about this topic.

Timing is everything when you're waiting tables, this is SO true. It's work to get that timing down, but when you do, life is SO much easier.
So, remember that when you're asking your waiter a stupid question that could be answered if you'd just take the time to read the menu.

If you've ever waited tables you could go on for hours on this topic. We used to do it all the time at the bar after work. For some reason restaraunt ppl never get tired of talking about work.
