Default High-performance supercharged Toyota Yaris GRMN revealed

Quote:
High-performance supercharged Toyota Yaris GRMN revealed

Toyota has revealed the upcoming high-performance variant of the Yaris will be powered by a 1.8-litre supercharged engine with more than 205bhp

The Toyota Yaris GRMN hot hatch has been revealed, ahead of its debut at the Geneva motor show.

It has been confirmed that it will be powered by a 1.8-litre supercharged engine that produces more than 205bhp, which makes it more powerful than most of its turbocharged rivals, including the Ford Fiesta ST200.

Toyota's hot hatch takes the GRMN name of Toyota's Gazoo rallying outfit's special edition Toyota road cars. Previous GRMN models, including the GT86, 2013-spec Yaris (Vitz) and the iQ, were exclusively sold in Japan.

What does 'Gazoo' mean?

The class average 0-62mph time is between 6.5sec and 7.0sec, although the car's extra power could mean that a time of nearer to 6.0sec could be possible.

Despite other cars in the class turning to five-door only body styles, the hot Yaris will be offered as a three-door only, and the Yaris itself will get both body styles.

The hot Yaris remains true to the sketch released by Toyota upon the car's announcement, with coloured graphics on the sides of the car, large, black-coloured alloys and a black boot spoiler. There's also a large central exhaust integrated into the rear bumper, and aggressive front styling. The reveal does confirm that the Yaris will adopt the distinctive manga-cartoon styling of the Aygo model, with an adapted version of its X motif across the fascia.

The model will rival a growing number of hot hatches and regular superminis, with the advent of a new Volkswagen Polo and its GTI variant, ever-rumoured Nissan Micra Nismo, and new Ford Fiesta, along with the Fiesta ST.

Well it looks like Toyota is attempting to make true on that "no more boring cars" pledge.

Interesting that they are bucking the trend by using a supercharger vs a turbo.

What's more interesting is this micro hatch could be green lighted a supercharger and will likely be quicker than the 86. What universe is Toyota smoking?

Another hatch! What is Boobaru smoking? Must be some gr8 sheet!
Well at least we might see some STI badges on the Crosstek. They'll offer it in yellow with STI badges! We don't need no stinkin' badges!

2,300lbs+/- with 205bhp is not too shabby; wonder how much a pulley & tune will do for that mill, and if they've done anything with the rear suspension (eg. IRS/DWB in place of the torsion bar).

I doubt this will make it to the States, which is unfortunate for car fans. This sounds like a fun, reliable, affordable little car. Maybe Toyota will surprise us and bring it here, as it would spice things up nicely, without seemingly costing them very much. Makes me want to dig out an old copy of "Sport Compact Car" to flip through. I think I still have about 10 or so I saved, stuck in a box somewhere...

This car appears to have the right ingredients to actually be fun. Now fix the looks.

Yet we can't get a FRS with more than 87 horsepower.

Supercharged Toyota Yaris GRMN full specs confirmed

The Toyota Yaris GRMN hot hatch produces a peak of 209bhp at 6800rpm, the brand's performance arm Gazoo Racing has confirmed in Frankfurt.

Powered by a 1.8-litre supercharged engine, the Yaris outpunches rivals such as the 197bhp Ford Fiesta ST200 and 205bhp Peugeot 208 GTi.

The car's highly-strung four-pot also produces 184lb ft of torque, enabling it to accelerate from 0-62mph in a claimed 6.3sec and reach an electronically limited 143mph top speed.

Toyota claims its car weighs 1135kg, making it one of the lightest models in this segment. It sits on 17in BBS alloy wheels and Sachs performance shock absorbers.

Toyota Yaris GRMN prototype driven

Despite other cars in the class turning to five-door only body styles and the regular Yaris coming in three and five-door forms, the hot Yaris will be offered as a three-door only.

Just 400 examples of the Yaris GRMN are destined for Europe. Buyers can pre-order theirs now, with prices starting from £26,295.

Toyota's hot hatch takes the GRMN name of Toyota's Gazoo rallying outfit's special edition Toyota road cars. Previous GRMN models, including the GT86, 2013-spec Yaris (Vitz) and the iQ, were exclusively sold in Japan.

a couple that come to mind:

fuel efficiency, or more realistically, potential fuel efficiency (to mesh well with EPA testing)

sc efficiency vs tc efficiency - without getting too into it, sc efficiency drops off at higher RPM's, small displacement DOHC I4's by design are winders.

yes i guess epa testing since half of time the time is spent idling

Seems like alot of stock cars came with root blowers, seems like it would be more efficient to pair them with centri chargers, especially if you have a high reving engine, just need room in the engine bay to fit it. I know when i fit one on my 3800 v6 that thing would hit hard at 3k and keep pulling past my 6400rpm cutoff.

Centrifugal are kinda a mixed bag; same parasitic loss of a roots, with a different effective/efficient RPM range, and similar packaging constraints of a turbo. I can't tell you why OEMs choose to go roots over centrifugal in SC applications, but I can say the packaging is easier with a roots, which likely plays into its preference.

most OEMs want responsive power, that is where a centrifugal sc is at its worst. not many cases where a centrifugal sc would be better than a roots sc or turbo.

We've had a few. The first Cobalt SS, TRD offered a dealer-installed supercharger kit for the first-gen Scion Tc, Mercedes did a couple; C230 Kompressor, etc.

But in a twisty road kind of car I prefer a S/C. The throttle response is instant and the power comes on quite linear.

I see a bunch of the Fiat Abarth's running around. This would be a neat, more reliable competitor for those living in cities and wanting a small car. That population in the US seems to be ignored by most manufacturers, unfortunately.
