Default Liquid ate into my grill and ruined my badge :(

I have an 05 wrx, I noticed some white crystal stuff on the grill this spring, figured it was just salt spray from the road and ignored it. Washed my car the other day and couldn't get it off

Even noticed that at the "streak" sections where it hit my badge, it has put cracks all in the plastic. WTF. It's like some acidic money shot on the front of my car. The only thing I can think of is the person in front of me drove through something, or someone tossed something out their window at me. The paint isn't screwed up, but this little grill piece is. Any ideas on how to get it off? I figure worst to worst I can plasti dip the grill. Seeing as my badge has all those hairline cracks though, I think that is un-salvageable :/

Edit: Coolant! Could coolant sitting on my car do this? I don't know how that alcohol would react with this plastic, I know it's not too harsh on the paint. It looks like it got on my car then dripped down rather than being slung onto my car while I was moving.

road crews use some new solution that isn't salt, and it's in liquid form, maybe that may be it.

The solution that road crews use is something like beet juice or some brine solution. For it to crack that material I am betting it is more likely some sort of automotive fluid. I know some forms of plasticizers used in plastics can crack polycarbonates.

very true. I don't know what it could be if it ruined your badge because that had to be some kind of acidic solution to do that

Not necessarily acidic. I assume the badge is covered in polycarbonate as the most likely material which is susceptible to cracking from different petroleum byproducts and solvents if exposure occurs over sufficient time.

I would try try black wow maybe prefaced with pre-wow. That stuff astounds me how good it is. No this is not spam and I am an actual user of the stuff.

I mostly use it on black trim prior to waxing so the wax wont stick to the trim. Although black wow will take wax off black trim if you do accidentally get wax on your trim. As for the money shot I have no idea.

If it actually cracked the outer plastic no amount of cleaning will fix it. Hopefully it is just a weird surface issue

Nah, took it off and screwed with it tonight, the liquid completely ate the clear coat off the black plastic part. It stained my hood too, I have been busy with school so I haven't noticed it, that's ****ed up. I hope it buffs out of the paint, I can't feel a difference in the surface of the silver paint as I can with the plastic. It is etched into it, and after sanding the plastic, the etched spots still create concave parts in the plastic. It definitely ate into it.

I can prep and paint the grill, no big deal. It's cheap, the hood is another issue. Given the way this streaked, it happened when the car was sitting still, so I think someone did this **** to my car. I don't have any enemies (Until now I guess) so IDK who would **** with my car like this. That's rule #1....

Any ideas on how to get it off the silver paint? I can't see it with a flash light, but in sun light, you can't miss it.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the tips.

I would look into 2 part epoxies as a cover solution for the plastic part potentially. More chemical resistant and the correct ones can get the level of clarity as well. I am not sure about the clear coat or other items though. Maybe some kind of spray on clear coat as a temporary solution?

I ended up hacking the emblem out of my grill, slapping some bondo on it, and giving it a rough sanding. It looks great! I like this much more than OEM, much cleaner I can't wait to put some primer and paint on it to see how it looks on the scoob.

If I can get those dark stains out of my paint this will have a happy ending to a ****ty beginning lol. I think I will try to clean it with a clay bar, then if that doesn't work I will lightly buff it with some compound.

Just make sure to reinforce the underside of the bottom of the grille otherwise it will become wavy. That middle pillar also acts as structural support for the grille aside from holding the badge.
