I'm not the best strategist, but doesn't that all but guarantee you end up in last place behind the SC, albeit on fresh tires? It only works if you react to the SC quickly like Red Bull did. If you don't, you end up Mercedes'd. At that point, you hold on to whatever positions you can. You don't pit if you missed your opportunity and put yourself in last place. Unless I'm misunderstanding your context.

The only thing that can mix it up is a SC or weather. The cars can't even follow closely enough to show a wheel. They fall back so they don't overheat their tires/engine/brakes and we just get the procession waiting for luck to fall into someone's lap. It probably annoys me more how much Croft hypes up how bedazzling F1 is when there is such better racing elsewhere. Even Brundle right next to him is telling us during the race that the formula needs to be fixed, this following is a problem and the racing is suffering. And that's what he's saying "on camera". Based on his Tweets and column, he's as frustrated with this situation as many of us fans.
I'm not complaining that the safety car made for a great show. I also am not complaining that safety cars create a degree of randomness. What I am complaining about is that the Stewards sat on their asses for two laps (3 minutes) to decide to bring out the safety car and at that point they called it immediately after the leaders passed pit entry. The field had driven over the crap twice, the Stewards could have waited one more lap and sent the SC out before BOT and VET passed the pit entry. The race wasn't decided by the drivers, the race wasn't decided by the crash, The race was decided by the stewards arbitrary timing of the safety car.

*not taking anything away from RIC. Red Bull needs to make Max watch those passes 10,000 times "Look passing without crashing".

Agreed, they seemed to wait way too long. I'm not saying they took any notice as to their timing and the lead cars' position on track in order to disadvantage them and spice it up, but the late call was weird.

I liked Brundle's comment on it:

Quote:
Clearly forgetting how Safety Car scenarios won him the recent Australian GP, Vettel has said that the FIA should consider the impact of the timing of deployment with regard to affecting the race order, presumably especially the leaders.
And I don't think a VSC was a reasonable option in this case as the point of a safety car is to condense the pack so marshalls can get out onto an open track and clear the debris. A VSC merely slows the cars down but they're still staggered all throughout the track which doesn't give marshalls the chance to get out there and do their thing.

To add an extra thread.

I'm so sick of seeing laps tick away while the let lapped cars through.

Lapped cars should be pushed back instead of forward.

I don't know why they waited so long after letting lapped cars through this time. They had fixed that in recent years. Even backmarkers are significantly faster than the SC by enough to only need one lap for a big gap.

It was always the weirdest excuse, that by falling back rather than unlapping themselves and catching back up to the back, the timing doesn't recognize that they've done one fewer lap. I get that technically, that's what happened and that's what the transponder says since it crossed the start/finish line one fewer time. Makes sense. It doesn't make sense that the most technologically advanced sport on the planet, something close to aerospace engineering can't handle a +1 for a few cars. I don't buy that part for a second.
