Default What is it about the "Subaru" which made you buy one ? What makes it a great car ?

I am learing something, I have been missing my Subaru owning days

Sure my Evo is fast, but there is something missing

Comradery with fellow owners is strong with Subaru owners - there is a proud bond they share which is about more than who has the fastest car

I remember I bought my Subaru (2002 WRX) - comming out of a SL600 benz - after I run fell in love withe the "face" on the WRX the bug eye headlights - it was cute and then when I test drove it it was fun, I had fun driving it every where, its a fun car to drive

I bought my Evo becuase I thought it would be easy to make it very fast

I really never liked Mitsubishi and dont like the way they run their business frankly

I do like the fellow Evo owners they are all car guys who want a fast car but somehow they seem to lack the passion for the brand and loyalty to the brand that Subaru owners have

I have been asking about to many Subaru owners

"WHY did you buy a Subaru, what is it you love about it"

Answers I have been getting

"Its always been my dream to have one since PS I"

"I love the sound"

"I love to drive it in the mud"

"All my friends also have STI's"

Please guys if you have any reason you can share about why you bought a Suabru - please post them up here . . . I'd like to share some

For me it started as a child. We had a couple of Subies, notably an '87 GL wagon and an 80's brat. The Brat was my sisters and I always wanted it but she sold it before I was of driving age. The GL wagon was my hand-me-down first car and it literally saved my life. After the wagon I had a POS Hyundai, but soon got rid of it for an 88 GL sedan. I had many great times in this car but eventually traded it in for a 91 Civic Si. I muddled through my driving life w/o a Subie for quite some time but in '04 when the wifey and I were ready for a new car there was only one choice. Okay, 2 but I didn't think I could afford an STi at the time. Since then, as you can see the WRX has become mine and the wifey has gotten herself an LGT sedan.

Subaru FTW.

Some of us may have been born with the "Subaru Gene".

As a kid - late 70's early 80's I always had a thing for those cool sounding little wagons. I would point them out to my mom every time I saw on the road.

In 1989 after getting my license, I started looking and found by a divine intervention (a local car dealer was running an ad in a local paper and the printer they used printed our phone number instead of the dealer's phone number which was off by one digit.) When the dealer called to explain what had happened, my step dad told him that we were in the market for a car and that I was looking for a Subaru wagon. He then told my step father that he actually had one on the lot and to come look at it and he would make a deal because of the inconvenience.

On the lot was a "Fine Silver" 1982 Subaru GL Wagon with 99K miles. It had absolutely no options - Manual steering, 5 speed - power nothing...a basic car in great shape. I paid $1,200 and it was delivered to our house the following day. 3 days later, I plopped myself in the driver's seat, a friend of mine was in the passesnger's seat and that afternoon he taught me to drive stick. By the end of the day, I was driving like a pro.

I drove that car everywhere from to Maryland to Boston to Oneonta, NY. I put another 80K on that car before I was rear ended by a drunk driver coming home from work one night around midnight. The car was a total loss. But the good news is that insurance paid me $100 less than what i paid for it.

After a few other random vehicles - a VW Quantum, Toyota 4Runner, Jeep Wrangler, I missed having a Subaru. So I went out and bought a new 1997 Outback Sport. Again, I drove that car up and down the Eastern Seaboard. I was torn when I had to sell it due to my wife and I buying a house.

After 2 more cheap vehicles - a pile of a Volvo 740 Wagon and a Hyundai Sonata and a mortgage payment that wasn't so bad, the WRX finally made it to the US.

At the time, I was not happy with my Hyundai daily driver so I bought a 1964 Chrysler as a fun car to drive.

I couldn't drive the Chrysler daily and there it sat under it's cover sometimes for weeks on end. I hated not being able to drive it daily, So I put it up on eBay and sold it for twice what I paid for it.

After about 3 months, I finally found exactly what I wanted in a daily driver - A WRX Wagon in WRB. After the test drive, I was hooked. I walked into the sales office and signed the appropriate paperwork traded in the Hyundai and picked up the wagon 2 days later.

It really is the perfect all around vehicle...

02'.... WRX is first brought to the US... I bought one of the first ones sold in Tucson....

At the time it was about the only thing that was AWD AND turbocharged, and still in a reasonable price range.

Never looked back!!

I still think of Subaru as the "underdog"..... I had my STi debadged and took the shopping cart handle off... Now most people don't even know what the hell it is.... when they ask I just laugh and call it my "Evil Neon".... and they just shake their heads.... "ah... ok!" Or when someone out of the blue asks you what kind of car you drive and tell em it's a Subaru Impreza (don't even bother with WRX or STi.... you'll just get that dumb look again... lol!!) and they tell you how much they think that those are station wagons, not SUV's....

oh, the deluded fools.... they don't know what they're missin!!!

Prior to the subie, I drove a couple of Plymouth Turismo's (POS Omni!!!), a Dodge Shadow ES, traded that for my 02' WRX.... then near the end of 04', got my STi on year end clearance.... I've also got a Ford Bronco, which is my daily driver.... Car's only got about 6,000 miles on it. It's my weekend toy....

I grew up with alot of asians in my life. We have a very diverse community here. So naturally instead of going into the whole truck or american muscle aspect, I grew to love imports more. I started with a honda civic, upgraded, carbon fiber hood, exhaust, intake, ect. Than I started really pushing the car in the winter and hated FWD. Also, I didn't like the feel on the twisties with so much understeer.

When I was in high school I took a auto mechanics class. I met a classmate who is now like my best friend and he had a 2002 WRX. I had known very little about the car, but knew they were quick. He took me for a ride in the middle of the winter and I just got sucked in. I loved the car, I loved the feel, the control, everything. It was amazing and it just had my heart racing. I soon made it a primary focus to learn all I could about the wrx and get one myself. So I sold my civic and saved all the money I could to get a wrx. Surly enough I got one and I have never been happier. The Evo is nice, and I could always sometimes consider one. However, I will go back to nothing less. I love AWD turbocharged cars. They have me hooked for life. Something about Subaru makes me feel confident. They have a good reputation, in reliability and I still see old wagon beaters driving around. The car can handle so much and continues to impress me more and more when I push it to higher limits.

What is it about the "Subaru" which made you buy one ?
The AWD and the versatility of a wagon first attracted me, and to a lesser extent the looks - I hadn't fallen for the bugeye yet.

Testing driving cars at a multi-lot event I quickly confirmed that SUV's weren't my bag and the mustang they had was kinda fun but not as much as I'd hoped - this was three plus years ago. I tried a Forester... mushy handling... tried a Legacy... better but still lacking a certain Je ne sais quois... then I found a WRX. It was a sedan but damn did it look hot and when I took it for a spin (and made that turbo spin!), it brought a big, dumb grin to my face - I was hooked!

A few Saturdays later, I got up early drove (and ferried) all the way out to Port Townsend (from Bellevue), to lay claim to the last blue bugeye wagon in the area.

What makes it a great car ?
The AWD, the looks - always did have a thing for bugeyes - versatility, the rumble of the boxer and the kick of the turbo... Oh and it got me an 'in' to rallying.

my first subaru was a 1999 Legacy GT

First and foremost, after much research and test driving many other brands
VW, Mitsu, Volvo, Saab......

I bought the car for 2 key things in my mind: AWD, and Crash Safety

Reliability came second...

and Looks.... 3rd

Now, after owning this Subaru, there was no going back

I currently have 4 Subaru's in my stable
And my better 1/2 has 2 as well....
(we need a bigger garage)

Great machines. fun, reliable and safe....

Check on the GL. The first car I ever bought was an '85 GL-10 in '89. Digital dash, pneumatic suspension, whopping turbo boost! Even had a little fan / turbo icon on the dash that spun when you wound it up.

A high school friend's family had always had Subies - since the mid-70's - and when he was handed down an '82 or '83 basic GL 4wd 2-door hatch from his mom, I just fell in love with that car and its capabilities. Western PA is probably second only to Vermont for #s of Subarus (serious hills, plenty of snow), and that car got us everywhere all the time - and probably places a little old Subie shouldn't have gone.

After I got out of high school and into college (summer construction job $, not just lame high school sumemr jobs), I finally had enough to buy a vehicle. The summer between soph. and jr. year I looked from June until August for a decent early 80's manual wagon, and found none that looked like they'd last another 100k miles, so I settled on a red auto GL-10 for more $ than I wanted to pay.

Turns out it was a great car, very good in the snow w/its shift on the fly button on the floor mounted gear selector, got decent gas mileage, and I loved it until it died an untimely death 2 years later in the middle of rural Ohio one trip back to college. Something caused a fire in the engine bay, and being out in the boonies there wasn't a lot I could do to stop it. Had to flag down a passing trucker about 20 minutes into a roasting fire on the side of Ohio 39 (I think?!?), who called it in on his cb. Took another half hour for VFD to arrive, and she was done for. The extinguisher I usually kept in the trunk wasn't there - Dad, who had borrowed my car a few weekends before that to go hunting, had unloaded it... He was very apologetic after that, though I don't know how much it would've helped put out the fire, had it been in the trunk. He later helped me buy a '91 Integra (put down a bit over half), he felt so bad.

Sorry for rambling, but yeah, another Subie fan who started w/a GL.

early in my driving years, i had an AMC eagle sedan that was the absolute perfect vehicle. although you probably wouldn't expect it, that vehicle was VERY similar to a modern suby... unique engine (inline straight 6), great awd system which was selectable to RWD only, capable offroad and in snow but also fun to drive. That car was almost identical to my wrx as far as weight and wheel base even! the interior actually was somewhat similar, the gauge layout was very close, eagles had 1 round orb air vent on each side, just like suby's do, and 2 standard directional grid vents in the center, again just like subys.

only drawback was that it had a 21 gallon tank for a reason. I averaged mid to low teens for mileage... back when i drove it gas was under $1.00, but it still made a difference when I had to commute 80-90 miles a day. (the I6 258 wasn't great, but I had an eagle sedan with the trailering package. bigger rear end and lower gear ratios overall.)

In the early 80's I learned to drive a stick on a neighbor's (early 80's) Subie 4wd wagon. Guess it's somewhat in my blood, even though my '04 WRX wagon is the first Subie I've ever personally owned.

I wuv my Subie.

My current Legacy is my first car and a hand-me-down. My initial thoughts on it were-
It's old (not a big deal)
It's a wagon (yuck!)
It's a stick (yay!)
It's slow

Now my thoughts are-
It's still going!
It's a wagon FTW!
It's a stick, and I'll never drive an automatic if I can help it
It's still slow, but I know what I can do to amend that

So yeah, my slow ass Legacy wagon with a bunch of miles on it has hooked me on Subarus, and I haven't even driven a boosted Subie

For me it was a no brainer. My first car was a 1980 volvo. I hated that car. I got my first subie in 1996 when it was three years old. I needed a car that got good mileage, could handle bad dirt roads, was good in the snow, and had a lot of storage. My older brother had one and he loved it. I got mine and I loved it. I beat the hell out of that car and it never compleined. I put less into repairs in the ten years I owned that car, while beating it up then I did in the three years I owned that Sweedish meatball.

As far as the connection between subaru owners, I feel like we know something that no one else knows. No one knows how great these cars are unless they drive one. Every subaru owner I see gives me this knowing smirk, like they are the only ones in the room that know the punch is spiked. Once subaru sent the wrx over here....

I was brought home from the hospital in an old Suby wagon (folks can't remember what kind, but I'm betting it was a late 70's GL)

Parents had Subies until the mid-80's when my dad started to get a company car and mom needed a min-van to start hauling us kids. Fast forward to 98 or so and I pick up a Loyale, followed by many more Subies.
Now my Brother is driving a 96 OBS, the wife has a B9, I have a 95 OBS that I am lifting, a slammed Forester, and a 94 Impreza L rallycross beater.

Still looking for a 86-87 RX with a 5spd and locking diff

Forgot to add.

My mother is getting ready to buy a BAJA and my father finally talked his company into letting him get a base 07 Outback :monkey:

Boxer 4 engine has less vibration than in-line 4 (w/out balance shafts) = smoother highway cruising.

Never was a big Suby lover until my Mom wanted a sedan to replace her Nissan Max SW. We shopped around and looked at eveything that made sense for the area we live in and narrowed it down to either a Audi A6 AWD or a Suby LGT (97). In 97 they were running those "mere mortals" commercials on TV and that got my interest to really go look at the LGT. After the sales guy did his speal, we took one for a test drive and that's what sold us. We took the car to the back of the lot off into the grass and down into the drainage holding "pond" area for the dealership where all the water from the parking lots run into. I was driving and he said just take it in the water till the tires are covered in about 4" of water. At this time I'm thinking "we're are going to be stuck" (i.e. water and grass = stuck). He says to stop, so I did and then he tells me to drive out...and it did without a slip or complaint. I was stunned, then we do the 2 tires on pavement 2 on grass pull away test. Normal cars would have spun but the LGT just powered away. That's when I knew what a Subaru was capable of. Years later the LGT was passed down to me, and then traded for an 03 WRX and it's been Suby for me since. I've even bought an XT to play around with when I started snow boarding. Made a fun play car till I sold it to a fellow in Minnesota.
In my area there is a definite "fellowship" with other Subaru drivers that I don't think other brand names can claim. I guess what makes me love mine is the mix of styling, power, technology and the ability to make one "your own" with mods you can do on your own.
