2018 5.0 displacement & horsepower increased thanks to cylinder lining

engineer it then fine tune it year to year is a good model rather than blow all your cookies on the initial release, that's makes things appear "stale"
I wouldn't consider a 16% bump in the Miata an incremental increase. They went from not trying to trying, which is consistent with the "last minute addition to the US market" perspective.

Regarding the 5.0,
The 2011 was the first year a big change from the modulars because it was 4 valve DOHC with intake and exhaust VVT vs 3 valve VVT similar to what GM uses on their pushrod engines.
The 2015's main change was adding tumble control valves and changing the port shape.
The 2018 went direct injection which is a big change as you would expect. The rest were tiny things; friction reduction and a couple cubic centimeters don't do a whole lot.

It would be like if in 2015 Ford added 65 horsepower to the 5.0 which is 16%. They bumped it about 5% (412 to 435)

Wonder what the carplay/android auto situation is. Some reviews say it will come later, so like MY19.5 or a dealer update?

It's being rolled out, but the official implementation also requires an update to the hardware (in particular the USB ports) so it costs money from the dealer. Those with cars like the new Mazda6 who were promised it as an update will get it for free, and while I think it can be retrofitted to older models it isn't cheap...couple hundred bucks if I recall correctly.

Yes... USB do need the change and it's 175 here in Portugal (cheapest I've seen comparing to other EU countries where it might get to 250).
