2016 WRX FMIC vs TMIC
Hey guys and gals, wanted to chime in an ask a question if you can help add some insight. I have a 2016 WRX with the FA. my current set up is tuned at 358 WHP on 93 pump gas using a TMIC from mishimoto. I just put on a PRL motorsports front mount, and its seems like the car is just lagging. so much that I thought i had a boost leak, but i'm pretty sure its just the new FMIC. So, my thoughts:
Is my example really just the cold hard facts that the stock turbo is too small for a big FMIC like this and the lag is real? Or will a retune fix this? I'm considering selling it now even after only 500 miles because i liked the throttle response better before. Or, will a retune fix it and i can finally be happy with me car? (lol yea right). I'm currently running the tune that was made on a TMIC for this FMIC. Secondly, I'm noticing that my engine temps are almost 20 degrees higher now! This is likely due to the FMIC blocking the radiator, any advice on what I can do about this? Thanks for your help guys. My tuner said they do not see boost response issues on the FA20 at all, but i'm not sure i believe him. The EJ motors did have boost response issues he says, but not the new FA20 motors. Thoughts? -Justin

NASIOC > NASIOC Technical > FA Series Normally Aspirated Powertrain
NASIOC > NASIOC Technical > FA Series Factory 2.0L Turbo Powertrain To help your answer anyways, I have gone from a Killer B TMIC to a TurboXS FMIC and had dyno'd it on both setups there is a 200-300rpm lag with FMIC. PRL is bigger than TurboXS so there could be more lag due to the extra volume. Oil cooler mounted where the TMIC used to be (there is a bracket kit being sold on the facebook group to mount a mishimoto oil cooler here) or swap to a smaller FMIC can help you reduce temps. |

hey there, thanks for the reply, i made an error with my thread choice! i didn't realize it said naturally aspirated. I appreciate your help anyways. Yeah it seems like maybe i'm kinda screwed either way, even if i get the car tuned, its still going to lack the throttle response lower in the rev range compared to a TMIC. Im just trying to decide if spending the money on a remapping of my current tunes will give me what i really want, which is maintaining that throttle response, yet gain more power and increased resistance to heat soak. Thanks again!

I don't think it should feel that much more laggy. Something else is wrong. Not sure who your tuner is, but there are only a handful of guys that I would let touch the FA20DIT, it is nothing like the EJ series and not all the same tuning principles apply.

If you are currently running the tune that was made for a TMIC, then that is probably your issue. Throttle response and turbo lag are not common issues I see people complaining about with the newer WRX platform. Check your clamps n such for boost leaks/ consult your tuner. Also, immortal is right on the FA20DIT. I can count on one hand the number of people I would trust to do a proper tune on these newer engines. There are a ton of variables to consider so getting someone who is known and respected will yield much better results. eg: mikey botti, corbin johnson, junior, bren, etc..
350whp is really where you want to be in that car without a built engine. Pushing it further without building it is asking for trouble. If you are not happy with those kind of numbers, and don't plan on moving to a built setup, Id say sell it off before you are in too deep. Just my 2 pennies. I dont have first hand experience with a FMIC on the FA20 but as others have said you dont hear of people complaining about throttle response. Yes it will be slightly worse but the tune is most certainly making it a lot worse. I think get a tune done with the FMIC. You have already gone to the effort of fitting it up and I am yet to hear of anyone swapping back to a TMIC on an FA20DIT. The extra cooling of a FMIC is a very good thing.
