Oil Leak on Driver's Side after EJ257 Hybrid Build
Putting this one to my fellow NASIOC 'ers -- I'm nearing the final straw on this
So, my EJ257/Hybrid has a runny nose. Runny left nostril, I guess, to be technical. My longblock assembler and I have exhausted our brain power trying to solve this short of pulling the engine for inspection. EJ257 SB EJ205 Heads with STi Cams JDM 12mm Oil Pump Lots of other crap that shouldn't matter It leaks out somewhere out of the driver's side front. The oil drips out of the timing belt cover on the driver's side. We just tore it completely apart and inspected all of the cam seals, the main seal, all of the plugs in the heads, etc. Other than a perhaps teeny-weeny-kinda-leak on one of the cam seals, which got replaced to be safe, there were no signs of the leak, other than oil everywhere. There was oil all over the timing covers, the gears, belt, etc. Everything seemed in order with the idlers and tensioner, but I'll admit we didn't consider the tensioner as a potential source until after reassembly. It seems specifically driver's side oriented, but we have checked and re-checked the cam seals and such. What have we missed?

Is the additional cc breather port on the STI shortblock capped... if so, that may be the issue; if i'm not mistaken, that breather is there to equalize the the pressure between the crankcase and the heads.

It is capped...but how would that force oil out of the head?

I believe that port is supposed to equalize the pressure between the crankcase and the heads... I don't know enough to explain the specifics but i capped my breather and I am also have the same issue with the leaking cam seal
I searched this forum for a few days and I found that a number of people with these 2.5l hybrid motors either leaked or blew cam seals due to too much pressure building up in the heads. I'm thinking about T-ing a line from the breather and tapping both valve covers but i'm not sure if that will affect the vacuum so i'm still researching. here's my original thread by the way http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=1473602 |

I'm at a total loss. Pretty much ready to drop it off at a shop with the "don't call me till it's done" story. Any and all ideas welcome... |

put dye in the oil, check with a black light, any engine builder should know to do this, easy way to trace where the oil came from.

I hate how threads like this go dead so much on NASIOC. I have this exact same issue and have found not one but two threads where no one posts the resolution.
If anyone is still subscribed to this thread who knows the outcome of this issue, please respond even though it's been 6 years lol. |

One of the plugs in the end of the STI intake cams to delete AVCS was leaking. Fixed that and things were good to go.
