Your car positioning in the first shot is spot on, pare...I like how I can see the face of the wheels. The second shot is a little more centered than I'd like, but you got nice and low so that's good. My only other recommendation would be to find a nicer background to help compliment the cleanliness of your car

So I went to the ALMS at Limerock and took a few pics with my mothers Nikon D300.

Going from a Canon XTi to this is a big difference. I don't think my mother is going to get her camera back

Here is a shot I took. Learning a few things with Photoshop too, but what are the best tools and settings for action shot pictures?

All i did in this pic was Sharpen, Shadow/Highlights, Auto Levels Contrast and Color and finished with Brightness and Contrast.

Hey Armin, Its Jeff from San Diego....we ate at In n Out with the Junkies back in the day.

Love all your work.

Here's some shots I took recently trying to learn how to use my Nikon D50. Can I get some feedback/advice?

Thanks!

I wish the lighting was better in this one...not sure what happened.

You did good with this shot, simply because your camera settings were right and you got a good capture of the motion. As far as best tools and settings for action shots, there really isn't one thing you can put your finger on. It all depends on what kind of effect you're trying to achieve. For example, here's a shot I took at Formula D last year, trying to keep a realistic look to everything:

And here's a shot my friend Josh took at the same time, standing about 10 feet away from me:

That's basically little/no editing compared to a lot of editing. It's up to you to decide on what you want

Hey Jeff!

Good to hear from you...I miss you guys down there. Haven't been back in awhile! Anyway, your photos look good...on the thing that jumps out at me is that if you want to take a good photo of your car(s), you gotta make sure they're the subject, and not just something that happens to be in the shot. The best way to achieve this is to pose the car in some way...turn the wheels so that they face the camera, don't let any object get in the way of the car, or park it in such a way that isn't normal, for example:

If you saw this SRT-4 parked on the road like this, you'd probably point and laugh at how ghetto the parking was! But for photos...it works great Hope this helps!

I finally have some pics to submit for advice.

I'm finding it really hard to know when enough is enough when playing with the color balances, especially on the second picture. Nothing seemed to work. Either the car looks off or the sky.

Ferg, are you shooting these in JPEG or RAW? The color doesn't look bad at all, but the sky could use a little burning in Photoshop. Post processing is a whole different story than first taking a good photo, and it looks like you're off to a good start already Shoot me a PM if you want more detailed advice, since post processing can be rather long and convoluted

You've got the car positioned right with the wheels facing the camera...I'd just stay away from the center and find yourself a much better location. Make sure you pull those weeds/grass out too. Otherwise, you're in good shape!

Thanks!

I'm having to still shoot in JPEG since I can't seem to find the right plug in to allow my creaky version of Photoshop 7 to read RAW data. I need to upgrade to CS3.

Hmm good point, I found that location away from everything else,
there a town by my place with a main road, I should try that.

I found a Canon app that lets me play with RAW files. There's so many options and little tweaks. Here's my first go with a shoot using RAW as a starting point.

Armin,

Just wanted to say thanks again for this thread and for offering up the advice to the folks here on the forums. I've definitely seen improvements in folks who are taking the tips here to heart and putting them into practice. Never a bad thing to see higher quality pics in the gallery. Take care, and hope to meet up with you one day when I'm up in the Pacific Northwest!

Your angles and height are good, and your locations aren't bad, but you gotta watch out on your composition, particularly cutting off parts of the car. The first pic comes close to the edge, which throws off the overall composition, and your third pic completely cuts off the side of the 08 for no apparent reason. The second pic is decent but I would've preferred to not have that pickup truck in front, and the last pic is a bit too centered for my tastes. Otherwise, you're off to a good start!

Hey dude, quick question. Is this a terrible pic because the focal point is the wheel's reflection on the door?

I wanted the front wheel to be as oof as the rear, but I didn't have my 50mm with me.

Secondly, is there too much negative space in this picture?

Thanks in advance .

^^^ I know you're asking Armin, but here's my $.02. Yeah, the shot doesn't seem to have any point of focus. Upon first glance, you think it's the front wheel, but then you wonder, "Why is it OOF?" Yeah, at 200 2.8, your DOF is not narrow enough to get the front as blurry as the back is. I kinda like the negative space since the front wheel is pointing into it.

I don't think it's a terrible photo at all. You definitely need the f/1.8 to really narrow the depth of field for what you're trying to achieve though. Negative space doesn't bother me that much, but if you can move it over a bit, it wouldn't be a bad thing either

Nice pics man...these are all a good example of how someone can still take good photos with a point-and-shoot camera. The only thing that stands out to me is the white balance on the pier shot (and make sure that horizon is level), but that's pretty much it. If you want to get things looking a little sharper and have a little more pop, that's when post-processing will come into play, but your compositions are pretty damn good already
