Post GC8 STi Swap: State Ref Engine Change Inspection Items

Hello,

Anyone have experience with the California State Referee Engine Change Inspection Process? 01 GC8 + 07 STi swap awaiting BAR approval.

There are a few required items for the State Referee Engine Change interview that I am unsure of, particularly:
  • If vehicle is 1996 or newer, needs software verification of donor engine.

I think that just means the ecu has to match the donor car but don't quote me on that.

I believe you need to take the ECU to a dealership and have them provide verification that the ECU calibration is the factory calibration (aka no tune on the ECU).

I dont think a dealer is going to take just the ECU and check it. They have nothing to hook it up to. More than likely the running vehicle would need to be taken somewhere and have the coding read.

I got state Ref'd last year for a Cobb OTS tune. It was straight from Cobbs site, I think it was stage 2. Anyways, after swapping back to the original tune, waiting 6 weeks and going through the "phone interview". This is from the email-

"Find a smog check station with the ESP GEN 3 analyzer. This is the smog check machine used to test emissions on 1999 and older vehicles, but it can also be used to pull data from newer vehicles.

#1. Plug in to the DLC connector on your vehicle.

#2. On the screen, go to DIAGNOSTIC TOOLS MENU.

#3. Go to OBD II DIAGNOSTICS.

#4. On the screen, click on CONNECT, machine will read vehicle PIDS.

#5. Click on GET DTCS.

#6. Click on GET VIN.

#7. Click on GET CID.

#8. Click on GET CVN.

You can print the screen by pressing FN key and INSERT PRINT SCREEN key at the same time. Also, take a picture of the screen. "

After doing all that and submitting all the pics and info, I got put in the waiting Que for another 6 weeks before I was scheduled for a visual state Ref inspection. Which of course i passed the function test but failed due to my Cobb intake had a CARB sticker that was valid for up to 2010, but mine was a 2012. We all know they are the same airbox, but the sticker didnt match properly. So i contacted Cobb and they mailed me out a new carb sticker that was valid through model years 2014.

So This is what they are checking and comparing to there master list of coding for all vehicles. So I assume you will have to have all those match the specific year and model you are swapping from.
